The Old Man watches the plan unfold from a table in the corner. An untouched mug of mulled wine sits before him, and he stoops his shoulders to appear more old and frail.

When the girl leads the soldier upstairs, he smiles a bit despite himself. He waves the waitress over.

"Excuse me, my dear," he says, his voice wavering with exaggerated age. "I believe my granddaughter purchased a room. Would you do an old man a kindness, and tell me which it is? I fear I've stayed up far too late on such a dreary night."
