A number of possible reasons spring to mind.
He could want to justify us reaching the caravan later in the day than we had planned without handwaving in a sudden, unprovoked increase in speed on their part. He could want our characters to bond in combat in lieu of another "threaten to murder the new guy" scene.
But apparently he's logged in, and is perfectly capable of explaining himself.
