Brand bows to the guard, and then moves into the kitchen. Eight more slaves. Eight. This was worse than he'd feared. "My name is Brand, and my Master is a guest of your Mistress," he says, by way of introduction. He'd need to get them talking if he was going to learn anything. "She allowed me access to the kitchen to prepare my Master's meal."

He takes off his pack to remove food and cooking implements. It was part of his disguise for them to look like they were travellers who might not have found shelter before nightfall, in which case he'd have been preparing this meal over a fire.
