Spoiler
The start of the Age of Strife found Gan Ceann shortly after the establishment of the colony upon it. Lacking the resources it would have had given more time, the colonists turned to older, easier to maintain technologies. Fortunately, the planet had easy to access iron deposits, allowing for the creation of swords, metal tipped arrows, and iron spears. The climate of the planet is fairly mild, and the primary souce of food is a docile herding animal whose pelts are used for clothing. Gradually, the decendants of the colonists fractured into clans due to disagreements, and these minor disagreements turned into blood feuds. Each clan had their own cadre of warriors to guard against their enemies, as well as raid them. Originally, these raids were simply to hurt the other clan, with the added benefit of stealing their flocks, weapons, food, and enslaving their people, enriching the clan. The constant clan warefare created warriors who were bloodthirsty and well schooled in hand to hand combat, but undisciplined, especially when in the presence of a feuding clan. This made recruiting a regiment from the planet difficult at best, until the planetary govenor had a brilliant idea: buy ex-warrior slaves from the clans. Normally, these slaves would be forbidden by tradition to touch a weapon for the rest of their life, but they were lead to believe that their time in the guard was the afterlife and they were earning their way into the paradise reservied for warriors. Fitted with chem-injector rigs, the warrior slaves strive to earn an honourable death, fulfilling their obligation to the harvesters of souls. Their devout natures and commitment to the tasks they are given occassionally leads to them being used as bodyguards for the non-militant Orders of the Adepta Sororitas.
