Clayton lifted up and held on the foot that Velma had stomped down on, making a show of being in pain. He wasn't actually in pain, but certain things were expected from the mortals in this bar. And if he didn't do these things, Velma would be disappointed, which he couldn't stand for.
Speaking of gals with great gams, Clayton likewise shirked his duties to sidle on over to a few of the young dames who were looking a mite inebriated, quite probably for the same reason Velma was chatting up the menfolk.
