Gnomish Wanderer is cute, but I lost track of her in Indochina near the Burmese border, lacking the finesse to follow the traceless passage she makes through the monsoon-drenched jungle. It is not for the ancient golden idol crusted with rubies and diamonds she carries that I pursue her: I merely wanted to say goodbye after the time we shared in Siam. But this is the way of her, sipping mango juice on some terrace of colonial splendour one day, gone God knows whither the next.
