I will point out that by official battles, they're referring to Gym Battles or other League battles - and that's because you don't legally own a Companion - it hasn't been captured, and wouldn't be registered under your Trainer ID as one of your Pokemon. It's still
technically wild, just more or less permanently helpful, and follows you by its choice.
