They're illusions...that are superimposed on anyone in the area. The illusions replicate sound, smell and sight of Zane. People who fail their will save think that they can feel it as well, though they must be consious about the part they are touching (i.e. if someone else knocks the hat off a copy, and it knocks on his shoulder on the way down, and he isn't aware that the hat is doing so, he doesn't feel it.)

If you knock off a hat, the hat falls realistically. If you harm them, they take on the visual appearance of Zane harmed, and unless the person is somehow unaware of being stabbed (and can't feel the pain), he won't feel the fabric tearing apart.

When the illusion doesn't match what they're feeling, they automatically pass the will save.

People who were copies of Zane, but 'disbelieved' it, however, still see the other copies as they are...and people who saw that copy before he 'disbelieved' it, would still see a copy. Discrepencies = passed will saves.
