Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
Yeah; druid casting, some songs (healing song, song of growth, song of fortification). What kind of tree do you want? Oak would be iconic; bristlecone pines live the longest; giant redwoods are the tallest; giant sequoias are the largest; there's a few pine trees almost as big as the redwoods, too I'm trying to remember which ones they were.

How about a base dragon and then a few varients based on tree type?... You can totally see what campaign I might use this in can't you.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
Updated half-dragons and put link (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showp...&postcount=248) in the feats/subtypes/other category.
Do not have all the evil dragons (actually missing a huge chunk including fungus, maleficence, occulus, Nessite, all the weirder/harder ones), but got a good number of them up. Will do more when I've had more than 3 hours of sleep.Peanut Half-Dragon Necromancer by Kurien.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
I like this idea. How about Dracaena? It's actually a classification of a few different tree species commonly called "Dragon Trees". Here is a link to the Wiki Page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_tree. Looking at the picture you could actually give the Dragon an ability to root itself to the ground and blend into it's surroundings by just staying still, since the picture kind of looks like it could be a dragon holding it's leafy wings up in the air.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
Well that sidetracked me for an hour; a relative of lucky bamboo, and a monocot that takes an arboreal growth habit (which is a rare thing). Little on the small end for a dragon tree though (max size is ~40 feet in height) and most of the pictures look far less dragon-like than the one on wikipedia.
I'm currently thinking some type of sequoia, some type of oak, some type of pine (maybe 2), some type of carboniferous lycopod, and some type ofprototaxities (an Ordovician giant algae or now thought to have been fungi; this would be the smallest at 20 m in height and possibly too small)had the height on prototaxites wrong, it's too small.
Hopefully I'll get started on these today; I was feeling bad/uncreative yesterday and still feeling somewhat so today.Last edited by Zaydos; 2010-10-07 at 11:28 AM.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
Considering you did all these in less than a month, how long do you think it will be before you get to dragons based off bacteria that live in the last layer of the Abyss where it curls up around itself and folds into the 256th dimension of the Far Realm?
Meaning you've done some crazy stuff in a rather short period of time. Kudos. When do you think you'll get over one--nay, two hundred? (One hundred would be too easy for you.)

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
With the suggestions already being worked on I don't think Zaydos will have about 60-70 at least. Throw in a few more interesting suggestions and the list could easily swell to over 100.
Actually to that end.....how about a Rainbow Dragon whose breath weapon functions like one of the Prismatic spells.
Also I think I saw a sort of joke Dragon a while back, the Pink/Blue Dragon. It's breath weapon was a cone of "Sex Change".Meddle not in the affairs of Dragons, unless you brought someone bigger and tastier along with you.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
I think it might be a while; my creativity has mostly burnt out following an all day (and most of the night) cram for a test. I'll try and get to work on a dragon today/tonight if I can get in the mood, but I expect they'll be slower for a while. That and I'm starting a PbP that requires me to houserule/rework a fair number of rules, which is taking most of my energies that were directed towards this.
Now to go to my room and then look up Carboniferous trees!
Edit: My google fu, or the internet is failing to give me additional information on long extinct plant organisms. Maybe the University of Munster can tell me something.Last edited by Zaydos; 2010-10-07 at 03:48 PM.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
Lepidodendron Dragon
Dragon (Wood, Water)
Environment: Warm swamps
Organization: Wyrmling, very young, young, juvenile, and young adult: solitary or clutch (2–5); adult, mature adult, old, very old, ancient, wyrm, or great wyrm: solitary, pair, or family (2-5).
Challenge Ratings: Wyrmling 3; very young 4; young 5; juvenile 8; young adult 11; adult 13; mature adult 16; old 18; very old 19; ancient 21; wyrm 22; great wyrm 24
Treasure: Standard
Alignment: Always non-chaotic and part neutral (usually neutral good).
SpoilerNot quite what anybody requested, but I spent ~3 hours learning about lepidodendrons today and looking at pictures of wondrous Carboniferous forests and wanted to make a dragon to live in them; I know you will forgive me this self-indulgence. Also if you ever have a pre-Triassic forest, okay pre-Permian forest and need monsters to fill it (okay I know the chances of that are next to none but this is still probably not the silliest dragon on the thread). And yes I know I put environment as swamp not forest, because the Carboniferous trees we know of had inadequate vascular systems and needed to grow in swamps.
Lepidodendron dragons live in ancient swamps, lost from the world at large, realms of giant insects, and old forgotten magics. Lepidodendron dragons are connected with a certain species of trees found in these areas, the trees from which they get their name.
Lepidodendron dragons tend to have mild personalities, and are slow to act. They enjoy peaceful times, in which they are given long periods to reflect and think about life and the world around them. This doesn’t mean that a lepidodendron dragon is necessarily a benevolent creature, a majority are but not by much. Many believe are so set in their ways they react harshly to any change, and others spend their relaxed years in contemplation on how to gain great power and domination. Others truly are kind and gentle creatures, although that doesn’t make them crusading forces for good; they’re just too slow to act for that.
Lepidodendron dragons have scales like the bark of the tree from which they get their name; their scales are the same color as its rough bark as well, with the tops of their heads and wings being a leafy green. Their eyes are a deep emerald, and they have a long forked, green tongue. Lepidodendron dragons eat very little even for dragons as they can subsist partially on photosynthesis. Lycopods growing in areas frequented by Lepidodendron dragons grow more quickly, and those near where an ancient dragon dwells grow at unbelievable rates.
For planeswalkers: Lepidodendron dragons may be found in some remote reaches of the Outlands, as well as the Beastlands.
Adaptation: Change the tree and you have a dragon more usable in standard campaigns. The electricity breath remains an oddity regardless.

Special Abilities:
Breath Weapon (Su): A lepidodendron dragon has a single type of breath weapon which functions differently than most. A lepidodendron dragon’s breath weapon is a single streak of electricity that functions as a ranged touch attack against one target within range (the range is the same as a line breath weapon’s range). This attack deals the listed electricity damage without need to roll and does not provoke AoOs for being a ranged attack; there is no save against this effect. A lepidodendron dragon may use its breath weapon as part of a full-attack action, if it does so it may not also bite as part of that action.
Speak with the Woods (Su): A lepidodendron dragon may speak with animals continuously as the spell. In addition they may speak with plants (as the spell) and vermin (although due to their 0 Int and Mindless trait they very rarely have much to say and have extremely limited capabilities of conversing even with including this ability).
Tree Shape (Su): A very young or older lepidodendron dragon may assume the form of a lepidodendron of the same size category (the trees grow to be up to 60 m talls; or roughly 200-ft), it may remain in this form indefinitely. This ability is usable at will, and takes 1 full round to use.
Woodland Stride (Ex): A young or older lepidodendron dragon gains Woodland Stride as the druid power of the same name.
Lepidodendron Walk (Su): An adult or older lepidodendron dragon may use Tree Stride as a supernatural ability, at will, but may only use it with lepidodendrons and the range is increased to 1 mile for such trees (instead of 500-ft).
Chain Breath (Su): When an old or older lepidodendron dragon uses its breath weapon the ball of lightning arcs from the first target to a second, third, and fourth target or until it misses whichever comes first. Each target takes half the damage dealt to the initial target, and the dragon must make a new attack roll (same bonus) against each target.
Verdant Aura (Su): Plants in an area of 60-ft around an ancient lepidodendron dragon come alive with its power. As long as plants exist in this area it is considered difficult terrain (if the area was already considered difficult terrain, it now costs an additional square of movement above and beyond what it had before) and any creature ending its turn within the aura must make a Reflex save (same DC as frightful presence) or be entangled for 1 round. In addition plants within this aura grow 24 times as quickly as normal, and lycopods (including lepidodendrons) grow 60 times as fast.
Lightning Barrage (Su): A great wyrm lepidodendron dragon may, when it uses its breath weapon as part of a full attack, make 4 attacks with its breath weapon. The first uses its normal base attack bonus, with a cumulative -5 for each attack afterward.
Spells: A lepidodendron dragon casts spells as a druid of the listed level.
Spell-like Abilities: 3/day Entangle (juvenile or older).
Skills: Autohypnosis, Hide, and Survival are class skills for lepidodendron dragons. They gain a +4 racial bonus to hide checks when in areas with lepidodendron trees.Last edited by Zaydos; 2014-08-31 at 06:34 PM.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
Furred sounds excellent to me. It just occurred to me a while ago that I had undead, magical beasts, animals (LOTS of lots of animals), and pretty much at least one representative of each creature type, except dragons.
Make it whatever way you want. If the other dragons are any clue, its going to be awesome.Last edited by LOTRfan; 2010-10-07 at 07:36 PM.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
You state that there is no Save for the Breath Weapon of the lepidodendron dragon in the Breath Weapon ability text, but your chart shows the Great Wyrm having a saving throw. I think you should delete the column in the chart with the saving saving throw and let the text stand.
DebbyP.E.A.C.H. Please Evaluate And Critique Honestly. Being nicer and kinder doesn't hurt either. Note I generally only critique 3.5 and Pathfinder material.
Please, please, please when using non-core material, cite to the books. There are too many books to wade through to find the one with the feat, special ability or spell you use.

Hey now! If we're doing requests for prehistoric animal dragons, then I want to see a Liopleurodon dragon. Or maybe a Mosasaur. Or a Megalodon. Something big, prehistoric, aquatic, and with lots of teeth. Your choice.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
Gorgonid Dragon
Dragon (Fire)
Environment: Warm plains
Organization: Wyrmling, very young, young, juvenile, and young adult: solitary, clutch (2–5), or pack (5-20); adult, mature adult, old, very old, ancient, wyrm, or great wyrm: solitary, pair, family (2-5), or pack (5-20).
Challenge Ratings: Wyrmling 3; very young 4; young 5; juvenile 7; young adult 9; adult 11; mature adult 13; old 15; very old 17; ancient 18; wyrm 19; great wyrm 20
Treasure: Standard
Alignment: Always Chaotic Neutral.
Now I know what you’re thinking; you’re asking if this thing is even a dragon. Well I’ll tell you what that sodding barmie dragon-scholar Zasper told me. It might be a horrid little furred creature, weaker even than the puny white dragons, but it has all the requirements. They even have that odd organ dragons have. Yeah I’d have dismissed it at the fur, too.
Well gorgonid dragons don’t have any relation to those weird cows they have on the plane, and can’t turn a berk to stone either, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe to mess with them. These little beasts have fire breath, now it ain’t no where as strong as a red drake’s but it’s still enough to give you a singe. They have sharp claws, and deadly teeth too; and from what the barmie tells me the older ones heal from wounds almost as fast as they take them. That’s assuming they even take them, you see they have touch skin that non-magic steel won’t even cut, and even enchanted chiv’s don’t always work as well as normal; see they might be from the prime but they’re creatures of chaos and only an axiomatic blade is fully effective.
If you’re going to hunt them, be careful. They can track by scent, and unlike most dragons they come in numbers. I’ve heard tales that over a hundred have been seen moving together before; now my sources tell me that’s a slaad-story, but they confirm that these critters move in packs of up to twenty individuals. That’s twenty dragons if you didn’t get it, there’s not many a blood that can go up against twenty adult dragons and live to tell about it.
Gorgonid dragons are small, for dragons, pack hunters. They have long draconic necks, and powerful draconic wings, but their bodies are covered in short, golden-brown fur and they lack scales completely instead having preternaturally dense skin. They have long, saber-teeth sometimes longer than their heads. As wyrmlings they have lithe, bodies built for speed, but as they mature their bodies become bulkier and slower till at full growth they’re no more agile than your average dragon.
Despite being pack animals, gorgonid dragons have only the barest of power structures, and no laws save those that nature imposes. Their packs are normally nomadic, wandering through the plains at random, and occasionally even moving through abnormal terrain. Scavengers have been known to follow gorgonid dragons, and their packs can sometimes be traced by the flock of carrion birds that circle around them.
Adaptation: Change their alignment to always Chaotic Evil and give them the Chaos and Evil subtypes and gorgonid dragons can be natives to one of the layers of the Abyss; a primitive and bestial race of dragons occasionally rounded up by tanar'ri generals and forced into the Blood War.

Powerful Bite (Ex): Gorgonid dragons deal damage with their bite as if one size category larger than they actually are.
Keen Nose(Ex): A gorgonid dragon has the scent ability, except the range from which it can detect scents is 30-ft per age category.
Improved Flanking (Ex): When a very young or older gorgonid dragon is flanking a creature the gorgonid dragon gets an additional +2 to hit. If a gorgonid dragon has sneak attack it may apply it to creatures not subject to precision damage when it is flanking.
Trip (Ex): When a juvenile or older gorgonid dragon hits an opponent with its bite attack it may make a trip attempt as a free action without making a touch attack roll, or provoking an attack of opportunity. If it fails its opponent cannot react to trip it back.
Augmented Critical (Ex): An old or older gorgonid dragon’s bite attack has a 18-20/x3 critical.
Swift Haste (Sp): An ancient or older gorgonid dragon may use Swift Haste as a spell-like ability 3 times per encounter.
Deadly Critical (Ex): A great wyrm gorgonid dragon gains Improved Critical (Bite) as a bonus feat, and their critical damage multiplier increases to x4 (for a 15-20/x4 bite).
Skills: Jump, Tumble, and Survival are class skills for gorgonid dragons. They gain a bonus to Survival checks when tracking by scent equal to their age category.Last edited by Zaydos; 2014-08-27 at 08:28 PM.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
Sorry Gorgonid dragons took so long, I got the table done and then had to go eat and then had to update a few PbPs and kind of got thrown off my rhythm. Also when you use one of these dragons please PM me and tell me how it went.
@The Tygre: Just tell me which; although I'd prefer to do one that doesn't have stats for the real creature it's based on.Last edited by Zaydos; 2010-10-07 at 10:11 PM.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
When talking about knives, it's "shiv" not "chiv." It's a very nifty dragon indeed. Nice touch on DR X/Law.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
Thank you The DR X/Law is from Planar Dragons that pick up a second DR based on alignment once their original hits 20/magic.
As for chiv I got it from the planar cant dictionary on this website which listed:
Chiv
A weapon, usually something with a blade.
I might change it to (short) sword, since it is probably closer in size to a short sword than a knife.Peanut Half-Dragon Necromancer by Kurien.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
Willow Dragon
Dragon (Wood, Feykin)
Environment: Temperate Forests
Organization: Wyrmling, very young, young, juvenile, and young adult: solitary, or clutch (2–5); adult, mature adult, old, very old, ancient, wyrm, or great wyrm: solitary, pair, or family (2-5).
Challenge Ratings: Wyrmling 3; very young 4; young 6; juvenile 8; young adult 11; adult 14; mature adult 16; old 18; very old 19; ancient 21; wyrm 23; great wyrm 25
Treasure: Double Standard
Alignment: Always Chaotic Good.
Beautiful and fey, willow dragons have a mystic dryad-like connection to willow trees. They dwell in the forests of the fey mostly, only rarely being born and lairing in mortal woods. Willow dragons are kind creatures known for healing and helping those in need; they have been known to move their tree’s branches to provide shelter to travelers lost in Faerie during its nights and storms.
Willow dragons are slim and small for their total length and even when they reach full growth have fragile looking bodies. Their necks are proportionately long, and long hair-like strands of scales hang from their heads. Their eyes are a deep violet, and their scales are brownish-grey streaked with vibrant green full of life. Unlike other dragons the presence of a willow dragon does not instill fear into creatures.
Willow dragons spend most of their time next to their tree, tending to it and the surrounding plant life like a caring mother. They can be seen gently pruning trees that grow nearby, cleaning them of caterpillar infestations, and have been known to grow angry with travelers who disrespect the growing things of Faerie.
Willow dragons can subsist entirely off of the morning dew as long as their tree remains healthy. Should it sicken they and its photosynthesis fail, they feel a steadily growing hunger that drives some to madness. This madness is so great some destroy their own tree breaking their symbiotic bond and becoming “Forlorn”.

Special Abilities:
Breath Weapon (Su): A willow dragon has a single breath weapon, a cone of sleep gas. All creatures caught in the area must make a Will save or fall asleep (as spell, no hit die cap) for 1d6 + age category rounds.
Tree Symbiosis (Su): Each willow dragon is mystically bound to a single willow tree (salix alba is the most common species for willow dragons) and must never stray more than one mile from it. Any who do become ill and die within 4d6 hours. A willow dragon’s willow does not radiate magic. A willow dragon may move into its own tree existing in a sort of pocket dimension while within it. While within the tree the willow dragon does not have line of effect to any creature, nor does any creature have line of effect to the willow dragon. The willow dragon may still see and hear normally as if it was in the space occupied by its arboreal home. A willow dragon may also store objects (but not creatures) in its tree as if the tree were a type IV bag of holding. A willow dragon may cause its tree to move slightly, but the speed of this movement is too slow for any in combat effect. Due to this symbiosis a willow dragon's tree does not normally die of old age until the dragon itself succumbs to the twilight.
When the dragon has an egg they store it inside the mothers tree. When the egg is ready to hatch the tree releases the egg with a tiny Sapling (Like 9 cm tall) growign from the top of it. When the baby pushes out from the egg the sapling is planted with the shell as is breaks down. And thus you have even more entwined dragons.
For a dragon that has lost it's tree it can as a last resort before dying attempt to coerce from the ruins of the tree a tiny sapling and so long as one seed or sapling can be gained the dragon may live. Should this sapling survive the year the dragon will have a good growing tree. During this year the tree is very fragile and the Dragon takes a -10 on everything while out of sight of the tree. A dragon that destroyed its own tree does not have this option.
Rarely a willow dragon, in a fit of madness, will destroy its own tree. Few willow dragons survive this act and those who do become "Forlorn". A "Forlorn" suffers a -8 penalty to Wisdom and lose their druidic casting. They gain a +6 to Charisma and sorcerer casting as a sorcerer of the listed level. "Forlorn" as lose access to all Song of X abilities they had as a willow dragon except for Song of Ending. "Forlorn" are always Chaotic Evil and exist in a state of anger, sorrow, and unending pain. Few "Forlorn" live more than a month, and none has been known to live a year in this state.
Alternate Form (Su): A willow dragon can assume any animal or humanoid form of Medium size or smaller as a standard action three times per day. This ability functions as a polymorph spell cast on itself at its caster level, except that the dragon does not regain hit points for changing form and can only assume the form of an animal or humanoid. The dragon can remain in its animal or humanoid form until it chooses to assume a new one or return to its natural form.
Song of Soothing (Su): A very young or older willow dragon may sing a song of soothing. This functions as the spell Calm Emotions except: it has a range of 60-ft; it lasts for as long as the willow dragon sings; fey with more hit die than the willow dragon are immune to this ability; and outsiders with the evil subtype are also immune to this ability. The save against this effect is listed under Song DC. It is a move action for the willow dragon to begin singing and while singing it may not use its bite attack. A willow dragon may only perform a song of soothing for 2 rounds per age category before ending the song and once it ends the song it may not begin another song of soothing for 1 hour.
Woodland Stride (Ex): A young or older willow dragon gains Woodland Stride as the druid power of the same name.
Song of Healing (Su): A juvenile or older willow dragon may sing a song of healing. All living creatures, within 60-ft, able to hear the dragon’s song gain fast healing equal to ½ the dragon’s age category while the dragon is singing. No creature may heal more than its maximum hp from a single willow dragon’s song of healing in one day and a willow dragon is not affected by its own song. Outsiders with the evil subtype, undead, and deathless which hear this song and are within 60-ft of the willow dragon take damage equal to the willow dragon’s age category every round instead of gaining fast healing. This ability affects plants despite them being objects. . It is a move action for the willow dragon to begin singing and while singing it may not use its bite attack.
Transport Tree (Su): An adult or older willow dragon may teleport themselves and their tree once during either equinox or solstice as the spell greater teleport.
Fey Form (Su): An adult or older willow dragon may use its Alternate Form ability take the form of a fey creature of extreme beauty. This functions as Alternate Form into a nymph except: male willow dragons may use this ability to become a male creature whose surreal beauty is equivalent to that of a nymph’s; while in this form the willow dragon gains a deflection bonus to its AC equal to its Charisma modifier; while in this form the willow dragon gains both the nymph’s Stunning Glance and blinding beauty abilities. It does not gain any other abilities of a nymph.
Song of Growth (Su): An old or older willow dragon may sing a song of growth. The willow dragon may target a number of plant creatures equal to its age category within 60-ft of it with this ability. The targeted plant creatures are affected as if by an Animal Growth spell that affects plants instead of animals for as long as the willow dragon sings, and gain fast healing as if from the willow dragon’s Song of Healing ability during this song (they may heal their hp from this song 1/day and from song of healing 1/day each). Non-creature plants within an area in which the willow dragon sings for at least 10 minutes will grow twice as much during the next year; no non-creature plant may be affected by the willow dragon’s song of growth more than once per year. It is a move action for the willow dragon to begin singing and while singing it may not use its bite attack.
Song of Ending: A great wyrm willow dragon may sing a song of ending. The willow dragon may either affect all creatures, except for ones it specifically designates as exempt, or affect only creatures it specifically targets with this ability. Whichever it chooses, targeted creatures must make a Fort save each round the willow dragon sings or take 2 negative levels. The save against this effect is listed under Song DC. It is a move action for the willow dragon to begin singing and while singing it may not use its bite attack. A willow dragon may only perform a song of ending for 1 rounds per age category before ending the song and once it ends the song it may not begin another song of ending for 1 hour.
Spells: A willow dragon casts spells as a druid of the listed level.
Spell-like Abilities: 1/day Shambler (ancient or older; may not use this ability again until all previously summoned shambling striders are gone).
Skills: Heal, Perform, and Survival are class skills for a willow dragon. A willow dragon gains a bonus to perform checks equal to its age category.Last edited by Zaydos; 2014-09-02 at 01:51 PM.

Re: 30+ New Dragons (more true dragons than the draconomicon)
The first of the tree dragons, and about the smallest tree I want to do (a gargantuan dragon it 25 meters long, a depending upon variety willow trees range from 12 meters long [a human created hybrid] to 30 m long [salix alba] from what I could tell; although this isn't counting species of willows that do not take up the tree growth habit), although with a huge great wyrm a 17 meter tree would be possible.
For the other variations I'm thinking about restoring Frightful Presence and modifying special abilities; leaving the ability scores and AC the same. That is except for the ones that dwell in 40+ m trees and can be full on colossal by Great Wyrm which will have their own standard format.
Also before it's pointed out that Song of Ending will always have a max duration of 12 rounds because they're great wyrms, there are rules for advancing dragons beyond great wyrm. And while none of my dragons that only reach huge by great wyrm are compatible without a homebrewed progression, I do try to make the others as compatible as possible. (this isn't meant to be mean, I really do appreciate when you all point these things out, but I'd rather explain myself on something that is likely to come up first so that you don't have to spend the time pointing it out, getting the explanation, and then deciding if the explanation is sufficient).
Now there's something I feel like I'm forgetting but it's late and I can't think of it right now.Peanut Half-Dragon Necromancer by Kurien.

What happens if the Willow Dragon's tree is destroyed?
Fighter: "I can kill someone in a turn."
Cleric: "I can kill someone in half a turn."
Wizard: "I can kill someone before my turn."

First reaction: Same thing as happens to a dryad; I copied pasted most of it from there.
Second reaction: I mentioned the ones that go crazy and eat their own tree.
Third reaction: that's what I forgot last night (actually I think I forgot something else too).
Fourth reaction:
