Not as true as you might think. I've played in theatres where the backstage (that is, the dressing rooms, green rooms, etc., not the wings or behind the backdrop) was separated from the playing area by concrete walls, and people backstage could still be heard on stage and in the audience.

And the performers on stage must not make a single sound at all for them to be able to hear Matt talking / matt not hear them :P
Again, not as true as you might think. Well-designed theatres are designed to project sound out of the playing area and into the audience, not project sound produced in the playing area to backstage. And the sign up backstage is more faithful than not to notices I've seen posted to performers. Good job, Coffee!
