I thought its like a large-beast thing.

And thats even after ith ought of it as a whale
(in hebrow, Leviathan translates to whale)

It's some sort of sea-monster. In ancient Canaanite religions it fights the sky-gods and is killed - possibly a mirror of Marduk vs. Tiamat (place your bets, please). The sea is a symbol of chaos, disorder, misrule, anarchy. When Christ walks on water it's not just a party trick, it shows that he has defeated and is master over these things as well.
