Pieter felt oddly calm, as if his reserve of emotions for the day had been spent. Escape was probably futile, as was surrender. No option but to fight, and the four of them might even have a chance out of ten. He opened his mouth to tell Ithelus to stand with him, but the Elf grabbed Illiiya and ran. Not fair, the initiate thought, filled with a sense of betrayal. Why would he fight to the death while the others ran? His most basic survival instincts rushed back.
Motioning Leopold to follow him, he followed the Elf up the boulders.
