Mafia IX Game Thread - St Valentines Massacre - Night 6

Four nickels.

The last few days had gotten me nowhere on the trail of whomever this mysterious dame - or dames - was - or were, and had earned me four nickels for my trouble. The doc pulled 'em out of my arm and torso one by one, tossing them onto the table.

"Never seen a man with that kind of luck, mister. Half an inch on any one of these and you'd 'ave been lucky to get in here soon enough to save your hide."

I didn't bother to reply - in fact, he would have been more suspicous of me if I had. I tossed a roll of bills into the hat, grunted quietly and put my outfit back on. I'd need new clothes, of course; the holes, black powder and blood made these unsuitable for anything short of being an intimidating mountain of trouble - and I could pull off that act in a conservative three-piece.

The annual elections were underway, with the usual squabbling that that involved. Probably better not to be involved, but if you didn't at least make a token nod toward the issue, people tended to get a bit ... upset. And upset people, though hardly a problem to a gentleman of my particular inclination, did make it harder to get from place to place or to learn what you needed to know. So I put in a few words, had a couple of traditional city 'patriotism' arguments with some of my 'esteeemed opposition', and headed down to Lucky's to lurk and see what the tide brought in.

He lets his arm be looped, and smiles at her route comment. I just like taking in the scenery. No matter how many times I walk through this city, I always find something new to look at. Noticing the shivering, James puts his arm around her shoulders.

Celeste steals a glance at James, startled. "Uh, thanks. You, uh, you don't have to do that, ya know." She bites her lip, wondering if he was genuinely being nice to her. She was used to that, but it never lasted once the business was done. She walked along quietly for a minute or so before they reached her apartment. She fished a key out of her dress and unlocked the door, gesturing for James to come inside. It was small, but tidy, the windows washed clean and hung with the sort of curtains that let one see out, but not in. Celeste came inside and gestured to the couch. "Have a seat. I'll get us a drink." She kicked off her heels - a smooth, practiced motion - never missing a step. She headed into the kitchen and fetched two tumblers, blowing into them to make sure there was no dust collected there. From under the counter, she pulled out a bottle of whiskey and poured it. Heading back towards the living room, she swung out a hip and bumped her record player, startling it to life. A slow, soulful jazz tune filled the air, a smile coming to Celeste's full lips. "This is Louis Armstrong - he's a colored fellow. Beautiful, isn't it?" She hands James his drink and settles onto the couch, one arm thrown comfortably over the back of it as she sits to face her companion.

Thanks. James said as he sat on the couch, taking in the apartment. He took his glass with a smile. Wonderful. I've seen him perform at a jazz club once. It's like that trumpet is his life. He turns a little to face her, then takes a sip from his glass. Oh, good stuff. What kind is it?

She swirls her glass, then takes a sip, enjoying the slight burning sensation it makes as it slides down her throat. She turns her eyes to James and smiles again, softly this time. "Let's just say it comes from an exclusive private stock. I had a business relationship with a gentleman in the...import/export business. And after our relationship went sour, he decided the best way to handle me was to keep me in his good graces. So I have my own supplier, in effect." She takes another sip, then holds the glass up to admire its color against the light coming in from the window. "I don't ask where it comes from because I don't care. I just know I like it." She smirks. "I think his name was...Jontom Xire. Ever heard of him?"

The city is in as bad a state as it has ever been! Isn't the job of a Mayor to improve things?

What could I possibly know? That dirk kris is a power role? All good aligned power roles are dead, so the only thing I could know is if he is a mafia, and how does pointing at a mafia make me look guilty?

KerfuffleMach2 has been getting my suspicions up a bit. Nothing particularly concrete 'cos I haven't been paying much attention. I do think Whitehelm seems pretty suspicious too, but since he's clearly going to get lynched anyway I figured I'd spread the voting a little and not just have a monolithic bandwagon day.

James thinks for a moment, then shakes his head. Nope, can't say I have. He takes another sip. I guess you get a lot of connections from your line of work. He smiles a little. Pardon me if this offends you, but I'm kinda curious. How long you been at this?

Celeste's smile wavers, but she keeps it on. "I guess the right answer is too long. She tosses her head, her hair swinging, then settling back into place. "Actually, it's not all that bad. I mean, sure, it's never anything I would have dreamed of doing, but it's interesting, at least." She shrugs, then sets her glass down. Slowly, she unwinds the scarf from around her neck and lifts her chin, showing the long white scar at her throat. "My first husband tried to kill me because some guy gave me a nod as we walked down the street one day. Thought I was cheatin' - and I never had. Cut my throat, left me for dead. I blacked out for a minute or so, came to, found his gun and..." She looks away and clears her throat. "Anyway, after that, I had a record, a reputation. Sure, I never served any time - it was self-defense. But still, people talk. Couldn't get a job. One day, a guy made me an offer. I needed the money - I took it. It just seemed like the best way to do things." She turns her eyes back to James and smiles again. Not a plastic smile, but a gentle, genuine one. "That was...8 years ago. Now I can usually afford to be selective, and I never worry about goin' hungry. The only downside is that it's hard to make friends. People either want somethin' or they look down on me for what I do." She clutches at her scarf for a long moment, then slowly starts to rewrap it, feeling self-conscious about the scar.
