First Word?
Well the roses thread reminded me, in a weird roundabout way of my first word. So I was wondering what the rest of the playgrounder's first words were?
Mine was 'Blomme' which is Afrikaans for 'Flowers'. the reason for this? I used to hang out with the Gardener when I was a wee boy, and I picked it up from him I suppose. (see the connection now?)Avatar by JenZeeSigatar by Me

Beer.
No, we have no idea, my parents never drank around us. Guess it just shows that the need is a genetic pass down from the Irish and Germans

I think mine was 'ello', where I was trying to say 'ella' in Spanish but it came out wrong. And my childhood security doll thingymbobbit was named 'Ello'.

Re: First Word?
Are we allowed to lie? Because if so then my first word was circumbendibus.
Otherwise I guess I have no idea.

Re: First Word?
Well, if you accept "word" to mean a consistently applied vocal sound/meaning pair, then mine was apparently "oosh" which my parents tell me was what I called any large truck (my best guess is that it was onomatopoeia for the sound they made as they went by, but I can't say for sure). It was a noun as I could count them when I got older (one oosh, two oosh, etc).
The first "real" word was probably "dada" which I understand is a standard in English as it's an easy syllable and fathers are quick to reinforce it.
I have a friend whose son's first word was "ouch". If you said it like E.T. and pointed your finger at him he's say it back and touch fingertips with you. The kid's aunt made a point of teaching him to do this for some reason. It was adorable.Take your best shot, everyone else does.

Re: First Word?
Mine was...something starting with B. Until I was sixteen months all my words began with B (except for Ma and Da).
Probably it was ba. Ball.

Re: First Word?
For speech, I don't know. Odd, really, since I was the first child and got all my milestones marked. (My baby book: footnotes and marginalia. My sisters' baby books: half-blank. So it goes.) For reading, my mother was standing in line at a fast-food restaurant and I started reading off the menu items at the top of my voice, punctuated with "Mommy, it says [this]!". All of them. Apparently the entire system of reading clicked into place at that moment.
One of my sisters was a "Dada!" child and I don't remember the other, except for that she was a late speaker.

Re: First Word?
I dont remember my first word, but I do remember the first cuss word I ever said...although, I didnt know it was a cuss word...it was the word "hit" but I added an "S" in front of it. I was at our neighbors house with the family and we were eating with their family cause they made spaghetti every tuesday. We were/are all pretty religous so we had just got done giving thanks for our food and I said it. I didnt know I was cussing, I dont even rember hearing it before. In fact, I thought I was making up a word. Well, when we got home, I got my mouth washed out with liquid soap...and now I am blind from soap poisoning. JK

Re: First Word?
I seem to recall hearing that mine was "hat".
I was one of those kids that barely said anything, then one day started spewing complete sentences.

Mine was "Moon".
Apparently there was a big full moon outside our apartment when my grandma was visiting, and we all went out on the porch to see it. I guess hearing people using the word so much inspired me to share my thoughts. How to Play Rogues Properly:

Re: First Word?
I was sitting on my father's lap as he played a game with my older brother. My brother would stand at the end of the hall and my dad would say, "go."
My brother would then run down the hall and back; then do it all over again. I guess I decided to get in on the action, so my first word was go.Avatar by Sneak - The Midnight Son by CeikaNo more a lone wolf, The Midnight Son rides again.Give thanks ye mortals, for he rides on the wings of an angel.Spoiler

Re: First Word?
I cant remember what my first WORD was, but I do remember the story told me by my mother about her first ultrasound. THe doctor points to the screen and says "and that's his hand" and of course, there's little tiny me, still in utero, FLIPPING OFF THE SONOGRAM. Little did my mother know I was setting a precedent.

Re: First Word?
Family lore holds that my first word was "Plinko", as in the game from the US game show The Price is Right.
Needless to say, I think most of our family lore is pretty much made up as we go along.

Re: First Word?
Well, discounting stuff like "Waa" and "Mama" and "Hi", which don't really count, my first word was "kitty". This is more remarkable when you know that, by saying "kitty", I was referring to a guinea pig...a guinea pig named "Bunny". And no, I'm not kidding.

Re: First Word?
Dirt. We lived near Mount Etna, and my mom was always sweeping up the ash, and I would try to get in there with my little broom, so my mom would always say "Get out of the dirt!"
My daughter's first word was shoes. We figure it won't be long until we hear shopping and credit card. Thanks to Daryk for the Paladin avatar. Darius Sungold. 1648 OOC.

Re: First Word?
Well, my grandma tells the story that when my mom was first born, she tried to breastfeed her, but my mom was resisting. My grandma said "What's the matter, don't you want to eat?" and my mom yelled "NO!" Of course, it was just gibberish, but it's still funny.

Re: First Word?
I'm pretty sure mine was "truck" due to my grandfather. Not mine but extremely entertaining, one of my friend's was "beer momma" which he would use whenever he was thirsty.

Re: First Word?
Here's another funny baby story. There was a little toddler, the kid of someone in the breastfeeding support group that my mom runs, and he and his mom were at some sort of social gathering. The little tyke was getting very tired and stressed out, and finally, needing to nurse, he yelled out, "I JUST WANT SOME BOOBIES!!!" Needless to say, the mom was very embarrassed.

Re: First Word?
"ba-ba" meaning "bottle" was my first word. The story goes that my parents had trouble figuring out how to break me of the bottle habit. They told me a story that my grandmother's dog was going to have puppies and needed the bottles to feed the puppies. So I helped pack them up and gave them all away to the dog. *cue awwwwwwws*
The real kicker was that the dog was male. Heh.

First word: Yay. As in the slang term for the Cambodian word for grandmother, which sounds like "look-yay".

Mine is unknown. My family doesn't know, since as far as they remember, I was reading before I was talking (no idea how/why).
All that I say applies only to myself. You author your own actions and choices. I cannot and will not be responsible for you, nor are you for me, regardless of situation or circumstance.

Re: First Word?
Mine was kaka, which is a butchered form of the word kaczka from Polish which means duck. I butchered a lot of my early Polish words. Czekolada (chocolate) somehow started off as kekakolada. Marchewka (carrot) was macherka. By the time I started speaking English (6 months later) pronounciation was easy because I had trained on monstrous Slavic words.

Mine was probably either mummy or daddy... but I know my first obscure word was either 'Ribena' (a british blackcurrant juice drink), or 'Batman'

Re: First Word?
Mine was 'Mine!' which was directed to one of my brothers who tried to take something which was, obviously, mine (or at least I thought it was )
Most people think it's odd that my first word was in English since I live in a Spanish speaking country with Spanish speaking people, but I was living in Canada at the time and my brothers spoke a lot of English while at home so I probably learned it from them.
