Any "Warlords" fans feeling deja vu?
Erfworld feels a LOT like a fantastic custom campaign within the Warlords games, even to the point the mechanics seem to be major inspirations (let alone how the game name itself lends to the focus of the story). The "Heirs to Ancient Power" game mode gives each player a powerful artifact while the "Battle of the Titans" gives players a highly advanced level 10 hero... Even the classes for the main characters in the comic are similar to those in the game. It's nuts, and I love it! I've also found myself compelled to buy another copy of the game just so I can put together an Erfworld campaign.

Re: Any "Warlords" fans feeling deja vu?
I don't know, I seemed to have missed the Warlords franchise. Any links to reviews? Personally, I'm see a lot of similarities between this and the Civilization IV mod Fall from the Heavens. Indeed, if I ever had the patience or time to actually try modding, I'm sure I'd use the Civ IV engine to remake Erfworld. Just make cities permanent and all there at the start, get rid of workers (no reshaping the terrain for you, non-Titan), find a way to model, make all units cost money instead of shields, and bingo! Maybe a little more complicated than that, but still.

The link is to the game spot review that I looted lines from. The game, and its expansion, are up there as my all time favorites.Homebrew:The Reaper-The Wild MageAvatar by Zarah

Erfworld sure makes me want to buy the game to try it. Sounds like a much better game than Age of Wonders.

Justyn dodges joke.
Joke has no effect.
(Yes, I knew that it wasn't the game that the original poster was referencing. But when I read the thread title, that was the game I was thinking of.)
Personally, I'm holding out for an actual Erfworld game. Including variation with and with out Parson.

Re: Any "Warlords" fans feeling deja vu?
It also does nicely mimic the huge turnaround you can get in such games from battles where, on the one hand:
- Most of your units die
But on the other:
- Your character(s) level
- You pick up uber-shinies
- And/or you get a whole new army thanks to necromancy
I have a couple of very fond memories of such battles, especially when played multiplayer ;-) These games turn on such events - and it now looks very like Gobwin Knob's fortunes have changed. Hope the Tool can see it.

Re: Any "Warlords" fans feeling deja vu?
I've found that high level Theives make for scary hero assassins, whereas Shamans tend to make the most powerful army heads when you have the gems to cover the upkeep of spells like Evil Eye.
This has gotten off topic though. I'm just looking forward to seeing if there are any more connections between the two in the future.Last edited by Hadrian_Emrys; 2009-05-05 at 01:54 PM.

Re: Any "Warlords" fans feeling deja vu?
I definitely get the Warlords feel, it first started with Vinny. I can't remember the specifics, but in Warlords 2, at least, the evil heroes started with just a bunch of bats. I suspect Rob has drawn inspiration from a number of turn based strategy games, and one of them must have been a Warlords game.

Re: Any "Warlords" fans feeling deja vu?
I've certainly felt this was very Warlords-ish, particularly the way the Warlords (ie heroes) have their own units, the way Vinnie has his bats as the previous poster says and Jillian has her gummy beasts. Then there was the bonuses the different units got in different terrains (gumps in the trees etc), and the fact cities could be razed and had specific (and presumably upgradeable) defensive bonuses, well it has all felt Warlords-ish all along to me.
But other folks see similarities to other games, so its is indeed probably more than one thing.

Re: Any "Warlords" fans feeling deja vu?
Yes. Even when it first appeared, Erfworld always felt like Warlords II to me. Dragons, Archons, Warlord bonus stacking with unit bonus etcetra. I put hours and hours into that game, and continued to do so until I discovered Alpha Centauri.
@Kasavin: Actually, Fall from Heaven II is a much more complex game world than what we've seen of Erfworld. Janis maintains that as Erfworld works, only continual war is possible. Since FfH II is still using most of the Civ IV victory conditions, one can pursue victories other than Conquest.
Anyway, FfH II is a damn fine mod. I'd pay money for it if it was an independently released game. The Ancestral Hamster <'_)`
