`Twas a work of art...
Mosaican Template
A collection of magically infused stone, a mosaican is a guardian of many guises, usually disguised within artistic scenes as a creature attacking or watching keenly. They possess an imprint of the imagination of the maker to aid in the forming of scenes and the confusing of enemies.
They are most usually found underground, or in castles or vaults, guarding against any who may wish to pass.

A mosaican lion is around eight feet long and weighs nearly a ton.
Combat
A mosaican lion attacks as its original creator ordered, though usually in a way similiar to the creature it was modeled after. Therefore it tends to follow intruders silently, stalking them until just the right moment, and then it pounces.
Animate Scene (Ex):
As a full round action a mosaican lion can reasemble its natural form (a flat surface scene) to a life-sized version of its original guardian image, or vice versa. Beforehand it is indistinguishable from a normal mosaic scene unless Detect Magic or similiar spells are used. While in its flat form it loses all its attacks, but can then use its treadeasy ability.
Artistic Touch (Sp):
At will a mosaican may use a type of prestidigitation that allows it to change its colors to match its image(s), make itself appear soiled, old, cracked, damaged, or even newly laid, sparkling clean and flawless.
Fragment Spray (Ex): Once every minute as a standard action a mosaican lion can release a 20-foot cone of jagged stones that imbed themselves in their victim's skin, dealing 1d8 piercing and slashing damage (reflex DC 19 halves). The bits of stone within the wounds then pull themselves loose, causing an additional 1d4 damage. They form together, flying back towards the mosaican that sent them, and are reabsorbed.
Immunity to Magic (Ex):
A mosaican lion is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance. In addition, certain spells and effects function differently against the creature, as noted below.
A transmute rock to mud spell slows a mosaican (as the slow spell) for 2d6 rounds, with no saving throw, while transmute mud to rock heals all of its lost hit points.
A stone to flesh spell does not actually change the mosaican's structure but negates its damage reduction and immunity to magic for 1 full round.
Treadeasy (Ex): As a full round action a mosaican lion spread out upon the floor can abruptly spring up sharp stones into those transversing upon it, automatically dealing damage as caltrops for the space it occupies. It may then trip any of those who occupy its space by suddenly moving forward. To avoid being tripped, its opponent must make a successful DC 18 reflex save.
Tremorsense (Ex): A mosaican lion can automatically sense the location of anything within 60 feet that is in contact with the ground, wall, or ceiling, so long as it is touching the ground, wall, or ceiling itself.
Up the Walls (Su): A mosaican can climb and travel on vertical surfaces or even traverse ceilings as if under the affects of a Spider Climb spell, but only while in its flat form. It gains a climb speed equal to its base speed; furthermore, it need not make Climb checks to traverse a vertical or horizontal surface (even upside down). The mosaican retains its Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) while climbing, and opponents get no special bonus to their attacks against it. It can use the run action while climbing.
The mosaican's passage while flat against a service is soundless.

Creating a Mosaican
Mosaican is a template that can be added to any corporeal creature, hereafter refered to as the base creature.
Size and Type: The creature's type changes to construct. It looses all previous subtypes. It does not gain the augmented subtype. It uses all the base creature's statistics and special abilities except as noted here.
Hit Dice and Hit Points: Drop any Hit Dice gained from class levels (to a minimum of 1) and change remaining Hit Dice to d10's. As a construct, the creature loses amy Constitution bonus to hit points, but gains bonus hit points based on its size, as shown below:
Mosaican Size Bonus Hit Points
Code:Small 10 bonus hp Medium 20 bonus hp Large 30 bonus hp Huge 40 bonus hp Gargantuan 60 bonus hp Colossal 80 bonus hp
Armor Class: The creature's natural armor bonus changes to a number based on its size:
Mosaican Size Natural Armor Bonus
Code:Tiny or smaller +1 Small +2 Medium +4 Large +6 Huge +8 Gargantuan +11 Colossal +15
Attacks: A mosaican retains all the natural attacks, manufactured weapon attacks, and weapon proficiencies of the base creature. A humanoid with no natural attacks gains a slam attack.
Damage: Natural and manufactured weapons deal damage normally. A slam attack deals damage based on the mosaican's size. (If the base creature already has a slam attack, use the mosaican's slam attack only if it's better.)
Mosaican Size Slam Attack Damage
Code:Dimunitive or Fine 1 Tiny 1d2 Small 1d4 Medium 1d6 Large 1d8 Huge 2d6 Gargantuan 3d6 Colossal 4d6
Fragment Spray (Ex): Once every minute a mosaican can let out a 20-foot cone of jagged stones that imbed themselves in their victim's skin, dealing piercing and slashing damage equal to its slam damage, a successful reflex save halves (DC = 10 + half mosaican's HD + strength modifier). The bits of stone within the wounds then pull themselves loose, causing an additional 1d4 damage. They form together, flying back towards the mosaican that sent them, and are reabsorbed.
Treadeasy (Ex): As a full round action a mosaican spread out upon the floor can abruptly spring up sharp stones into those transversing upon it, automatically dealing damage as caltrops for the space it occupies. It may then trip any of those who occupy its space by suddenly moving forward. To avoid being tripped its opponent must make a successful reflex save (DC 10 + 1 per 20 feet it moves. Example: A creature with a base speed of 30 feet can run 4 times that, for a speed of 120 feet per round. The save DC would thus be 16.)
Special Qualities: A mosaican loses all special qualities of the base creature. It gains the following special qualities:
Artistic Touch (Sp):At will a mosaican may use a type of prestidigitation that allows it to change its colors to match its image(s), make itself appear soiled, old, cracked, damaged, or even newly laid, sparkling clean and flawless.
Animate Scene (Ex): As a full round action a mosaican can reasemble its natural form (a flat surface scene) to a life-sized version of its original guardian image, or vice versa. Beforehand it is indistinguishable from a normal mosaic scene unless Detect Magic or similiar spells are used. While in its flat form it loses all its attacks, but can then use its treadeasy ability.
Construct Traits: A mosaican has immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects), and any effects that requires a Fortitude save unless it also works on objects or is harmless. It is not subject to extram damage from critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain. Cannot heal damage, but can be repaired. It has darkvision out to 60 feet and low-light vision.
Damage Reduction (Ex): The mosaican gains damage reduction based on its Hit Dice, as shown below:
Hit Dice Damage Reduction
Code:1-4 HD 1/bludgeoning and magic 5-9 HD 5/bludgeoning and magic 10-19 HD 10/bludgeoning and magic 20+ HD 15/bludgeoning and magic
A mosaican is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance.
Tremorsense (Ex): A mosaican can automatically sense the location of anything within 60 feet that is in contact with the ground, wall, or ceiling, so long as it is touching the ground, wall, or ceiling itself.
Saves: Base save bonuses are Fort +1/3 HD, Ref +1/3 HD, and Will +1/3 HD.
Abilities: Increase from the base creature as follows: -2 dex, +4 strength. A mosaican has no Constitution or Intelligence score. Its Wisdom changes to 12, and its Charisma to 1.
Skills: A mosaican loses all skills.
Feats: A mosaican loses all feats except those that improve its attack, such as Improved Natural Attack, Multiattack, or Weapon Finesse.
Environment: Any; though usually underground.
Organization: Solitary, Adorning (2), Exhibit (3+)
Challenge Rating: Up to 4 HD, same as base creature +1; 5-10 HD, same as base creature +2; 11+ HD, same as base creature +3
Treasure: None
Alignment: Always neutral
Advancement: As base creature (or - if creature advances by character class).

Re: `Twas a work of art...
Type the whole line in again, manually. Someone in the tavern contest was having the same problem, but when I just typed the link end-to-end, it worked fine.
EDIT: Also - that's awesome. I'm so pinching it. *yoinks*I write a gaming blog. It also hosts my gaming downloads:

Re: `Twas a work of art...
Question: If a mosaican is pictured as holding a weapon, can the party actually gain that weapon? Or would it shatter/break upon the destruction of the mosaican?
Edit: And yeah, this looks like a fun encounter, to say the least :D-Vonriel

Re: `Twas a work of art...
With the damage reduction...wouldn't this be higher than CR3?
Awesome idea though. Reminds of of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 for the Arcade and NES with the Tigers popping out of the walls. The Latin American Native cultures, Egyptians and Aborigines would have a field day with this stuff.

A mosaican mindflayer stands some six feet tall and weighs around 300 lbs.
Combat
A mosaican mindflayer attacks as its original creator ordered.
Animate Scene (Ex):
As a full round action a mosaican mindflayer can reasemble its natural form (a flat surface scene) to a life-sized version of its original guardian image, or vice versa.
Fragment Spray (Ex): Once every minute a mosaican mindflayer can let out a 20-foot cone of jagged stones that imbed themselves in their victim's skin, dealing 1d6 piercing and slashing damage (reflex DC 17 halves). The bits of stone within the wounds then pull themselves loose, causing an additional 1d4 damage. They form together, flying back towards the mosaican that sent them, and are reabsorbed.
Immunity to Magic (Ex):
A mosaican mindflayer is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance.
Treadeasy (Ex): As a full round action a mosaican mindflayer spread out upon the floor can abruptly spring up sharp stones into those transversing upon it, automatically dealing damage as caltrops for the space it occupies. It may then trip any of those who occupy its space by suddenly moving forward. To avoid being tripped its opponent must make a successful DC 16 reflex save.
Tremorsense (Ex): A mosaican mindflayer can automatically sense the location of anything within 60 feet that is in contact with the ground, wall, or ceiling, so long as it is touching the ground, wall, or ceiling itself.
Up the Walls (Su): A mosaican mindflayer can climb and travel on vertical surfaces or even traverse ceilings as if under the affects of a Spider Climb spell, but only while in its flat form.

Still not sure about the CR's... at lower levels it definetely makes the creature more powerful, but at higher levels it actually seems to make the creature weaker. Everyone who uses it be sure to let me know how it came out, will help me balance it.

Re: `Twas a work of art...
I like the idea a lot. I think it's quite flavorful. There actually was a stone golem in return to the temple of elemental evil that started as a mosaic on the floor.
I find the shard spray and the treadeasy effects a little too simplistic. I would have done the following:
Give the creature Improved Grab, and a +4 bonus to grapple from the template.
Then give the creature a Trap the Soul effect. Essentially, once the creature grapples with an opponent, it will try to move the grapple until it is next to the mosaic. Once standing on or next to the mosaic, the creature will attempt to pin. If it succeeds on a pin, the grappled opponent must succeed on a Will save (DC creature HD/2 + Con, maybe) or appear in the mosaic, body and soul, just like Trap the Soul. Each such mosaic has a particular tile (maybe a gem) that can be shattered to free all imprisoned souls.
Just my thoughts.

Re: `Twas a work of art...
Hrmmm, well, that definetely has potential. I'll think on writing a sort of advanced sort of Mosaican addendum that allows them this extra stuff, for super protection.
I'm also thinking how interesting these could be once you add the Soulfused Construct template (Magic of Incarnum) on top of this one. Sentient mosaicans that can cast or use psionics just like the creatures they represent.
