Re: Groundhog's Random Banter of Weather Prediction and Anti-Gopherness #120
Versailles was so harsh because, in current wisdom, the Australian at the conference pressed for greater reparations so that his country would get its slice, wasn't it? It would be amusing to read a study of wartime expenditures vs. returns (in reparations, increased market share, saved cost of not supporting war-ready army, etc). That would be a book's worth though, and why waste that much thought on narrowing the query sufficiently for an essay?

Spiderlings are scattered over the back yard like grains of pepper. Now I know exactly what attracts the swifts to swoop and to land on the sheer face of the cinder-block wall for wing-quivering microseconds. Gnats don't land. Nothing lingers. Even now a tufted plant seed swirls as it tumbles down the wall, then upwards in a contrary current.

You know the Rules of Spousal Indifference as well as I do, Cristo Meyers: if party one doesn't care sufficiently to exercise the veto, party two may decide to do whatever he or she wants to influence the appearance of party one (although "and now you're heading back to the boring rack", in the middle of a clothing store, did catch me by surprise). In your case, though, I imagine the veto is undermined by formal wear being necessary for work.

Re: Groundhog's Random Banter of Weather Prediction and Anti-Gopherness #120
That was poorly phrased. I was the recipient of "and now you're heading to the boring rack". You're quite right, there is no non-boring rack in Men's Formalwear. A tie silkscreened with a trout print is still a tie, albeit one you can troutslap people with on a quiet Friday.

Would listening to "Two Heads" by Jefferson Airplane, as some celebratory gesture, be suitable or not?

Two heads was a very weird song. I like it though.

Re: Groundhog's Random Banter of Weather Prediction and Anti-Gopherness #120
The song itself isn't very celebratory, that's the problem, with a tune that plays on the ears like jelly or fun-house reflections, with lyrics of simplicity and anger. Still, if the person whom it's meant to celebrate has heard of it, that's gladdening. Let it play!

Re: Groundhog's Random Banter of Weather Prediction and Anti-Gopherness #120
I couldn't log into the forums for a couple of days....sadness......now, before anyone chirps up with outages or anything logical, I am blaming my ccountry where I live. It's not that this place sucks, it's just filled to the brim with pathetic in many aspects, internet connections being the top of the list there....and before anyone defends my country, don't, we don't even have any real army or navy or airforce to defend ourselves. Why? because we don't need it, invaders think to come here, think to take over then realise how far away it is from anything so don't even bother.....that was all, you may return to your regular scheduled channels.
Great sage of the seven heavens......
okay maybe not all seven heavens.......well okay more like a sub heaven......
and great sage seems a bit of an over step......more like quasi sage.....ummm sort of like the diet coke of sages.....1 iota of magic?
so really more like the quasi sage of a small area which at this point is undefined?

I feel the need to show everyone Lord of the Rings Dear Sister.
(Of course, it's only funny if you've seen its OC and SNL counterparts.)

I don't hate you all really.Spoiler

Re: Groundhog's Random Banter of Weather Prediction and Anti-Gopherness #120
Funnily enough, none of the formalwear that they all insisted I needed has actually turned out to be needed. I wear the same clothes that have passed for formal that I always have. Even the stupid suitcoat has been less than necessary as not a single job interview I wore that bloody thing to ever amounted to anything.
And I'm not indifferent, I hate formalwear with a passion.

If I can help it, I'm not going to wear a tie throughout my professional career.
I don't mind dress shirts so much; normally wear them unbuttoned w/ the sleeves rolled up, just can't stand having them buttoned up all the way, I start overheating (which is strange, as my body temp. is actually lower than normal).

....
Is it because I'm culturally illiterate that I don't "get" it?
(side note: that scene is the reason my mom refused to let me see all of FotR before I was twelve. I was ten when it came out. You can imagine the agony.)
Also: my neighbors are drunk and shouting. I don't like them much.Last edited by Dragonrider; 2009-06-03 at 09:58 PM.

Last time I dressed up to go out, the dress code was "Black."
Okay, I guess I have some black pants that are pretty nice...
And I suppose I could find a black button-down shirt...
And I DO have that black tie from my McNinja costume...
And I guess I could bring my black Fedora...
Yay, hazard at night! I managed to avoid the cars!

Re: Groundhog's Random Banter of Weather Prediction and Anti-Gopherness #120
Haha, nah, it's not really a big thing. I'm not sure exactly where it all came from/why it happened, but the original scene was the season 2 finale for the OC, which was then parodied on SNL. Now there are all kinds of Dear Sisters...a Lion King Dear Sister, a Charlie Bit My Finger Dear Sister, etc.
(side note: that scene is the reason my mom refused to let me see all of FotR before I was twelve. I was ten when it came out. You can imagine the agony.)
Also: my neighbors are drunk and shouting. I don't like them much.
And as far as dress attire goes...I actually like wearing the fancy shoes and jacket and shirt and stuff. I just hate ties.
