Re: Dwarf fortress
Generally I will tolerate elves until I have enough seeds to grow all available plants...
Then its war time ^_^.

Re: Dwarf fortress
I wish you could start next to Dwarves... So many potential, free bedrooms...
Hey, you think I could reclaim one if I butchered everyone inside as an Adventurer?

Re: Dwarf fortress
Not sure, I'm currently imagining the possibilities of doing that lava pit trap with multiple levels of grates...

Re: Dwarf fortress
I wish I had the foresight to build my deathedral (teehee) next to a magma pool.
Well, there will be evil-looking spikes on part of it, and there will be goblins to impale on them...

Re: Dwarf fortress
Imagine it... a tower with grates as every floor. A single lever releases all of the grates, dropping EVERYTHING into magma below. It is the only way into the great Dwarven city of "The Molten Halls"

Re: Dwarf fortress
Yep... the only downside is that it takes long enough to do a single level trapped floor like that...

Re: Dwarf fortress
I'd rather have a Dwarven trader with access to flux than flux myself, the on-demand unlimited supply is great. No exploratory mining required when goblins with lots of iron equipment start the sieges, or you could trade for that too. Setting demand all the way up so it costs twice as much is still really cheap for raw materials.
The problem for me at the moment is that neither me or the rest of my civilization have access to flux, so I'd have to melt down some stupid trinkets to get at any steel.
*hint* You can buy out most of any caravan with a proficient cook's lavish prepared meals. I can get enough food by trading this small amount of processed food to not even start out with growers or do any of that lousy food stuff. ^^
But eventually I want to ask for the non-food items and it needs to get going sometime anyway.

Re: Dwarf fortress
I found a suitable spot...
Temperate zone with a river and magma... red sand everywhere... trees are scarce, but enough for what I need them for. The land is flat... well, mostly flat, but it will be once my miner finishes. As soon as I determine which stone is most abundant, I will begin my aboveground structures as well as my magma death room.

Re: Dwarf fortress
I usually train a squad of 25 or more legendary wrestler/crossbow dwarves and keep them on permanant duty. All I really need.

Ah yes... Lava... life blood of the Mountainhomes.
Also, it appears my map has caught fire... thank Armok it happened on the other side of the river... Fire Imps must've shot at a wild camel or something
I'll have to dispose of them once I get my military up and ready.

Re: Dwarf fortress
Ugh, I'm really confused. My archer simply will not practice in the archery range. He has no shield, has a quiver, has a crossbow, there's plenty of bolts lying around, he's standing down, there's only one archery target and he's the only crossbowman, and it's in the middle of a very large room with plenty of space with top to bottom shooting. It's been months now and he's yet to get dabbling which means he hasn't done anything.

Re: Dwarf fortress
Also, make sure he isn't holding anything he isn't supposed to. Soldiers tend to rip each others' clothes off during wrestling sparring, and holding on to it screws up their ability to load and use ammo.

Re: Dwarf fortress
My new Sea-Lab is much more stable and easier to make. I'm just digging out a large complex, and then flooding all the area around it and under it. I am, however, leaving a small tube that leads back to the surface, for delivering food, booze, and fey mood materials, if they need it. Otherwise, they are totally on their own down in the Lab.

Is your mayor named Captain Murphy?
Edit: Curses! My first caravan revealed that my traders don't have access to Bauxite... Time to restart...
Cant have The Molten Halls without lava, and you cant have lava without bauxite...
Well, you can, but it would be stupid to do so...Last edited by TheSummoner; 2009-06-08 at 02:31 PM.

Re: Dwarf fortress
Bauxite is magma-safe for mechanisms, true, but magma works fine as long as you don't need floodgates or something. If you really needed a floodgate somewhere in an elegant construction, you could just have screw pumps over a ledge instead.
IMHO, it's more fun to play without getting everything.

Re: Dwarf fortress
Well, if I ever need to drain my magma pool to claim the metal items left by the goblins, I need floodgates... I suppose I could've made the magma fill require a pump to be filled and have this pump manually operated, but its too late for that now =/
Also, the limit I gave myself was that I would not use conventional traps to kill goblins (and elves). No weapon traps, no stone fall traps, just my own engineering projects and military. Should keep things interesting eh?

Re: Dwarf fortress
Well, that was fun. My first fortress just flooded. By my own doing. After the entire population went either mad, dead, or both, I decided to use one of my last remaining dwarves to tunnel straight into the river running over my fortress, flooding the whole thing. I found it quite fitting, since over half my dwarves had died from falling into a pond for no apparent reason, and the others had gone mad because they couldn't find any water to drink.
Now I've started a new fortress. This one is called "Axemurdered", and the expedition is called Ed. Which, apparently, is Dwarven for "Suckers".Last edited by Lord Herman; 2009-06-08 at 03:58 PM. Reason: Grammar, I made it better!

Re: Dwarf fortress
May I predict the end of that fortress?
SpoilerLegendary Axe Dwarf goes berserk, killing half your population before his comrads put him down. Depressed that they killed their good buddy and brother in arms, they go berserk as well.
Mine is called The Molten Halls if anyone would like to predict my end... shouldnt be too hard =P

Re: Dwarf fortress
How exactly do I go about getting metal? It's proving more elusive than Bigfoot...
(Psh, my comp doesn't know 'dwarven', 'elven', or 'ok', but it knows 'Bigfoot'...)
Anywho, here's my plan for the Chapel of Death (yet to be properly named)
Spoiler
Phase 1: Build the outer walls and inner walkways. (In progress)
Phase 2: Smooth the 1st floor's floor. (Mixed into Phase 1)
Phase 3: Build the altar, supported with pillars of red stone.
Phase 4: Place Menacing Wooden Spikes on the outer wall, and finish the roof that allows full access to them.
Phase 5: Build some frickin' chains (my kingdom for an aluminum bar!), set them up on the altar, and place far more stone thrones than I could possibly use to set up a sort of macabre theater of pain.
Phase 6: Throw some hapless Goblins (and hell, some Elves) onto the wooden spikes.
Phase 7 (terminal, also result): Chain up murderers, prisoners of war, and the occasional animal to the altar, and kill them with their own weapons (if any). Occasionally throw enemies onto the spikes, if skeletons fall off of them.
Final step: Laugh maniacally.
Potential Phases:
-Sculpt mountain to chapel, resulting in a dwarf-made spire with a narrow ledge leading to it.
-Build courtyard in front of chapel, for aesthetic reasons.
-Build tomb under chapel, to bury my Dwarves that they may bathe in and drink the blood of themalcontentsfallen.
-Use chapel as fortress, for coincidental similarities
-(Most difficult) make a river of magma all the way to the chapel, to somehow cause the mountain (natural or otherwise) to bleed oceans of molten stone.
-Reclaim as necessary.
Additional note: I may make the altar proper out of ashes.
I cannot laugh now. It is not yet time.Last edited by Arachu; 2009-06-08 at 07:58 PM.

Re: Dwarf fortress
Did you mine it out, or did you have to import it?
