    Grigor, human cleric

After much acrobatics (and feeling like just a bit of a fool seeing how the mage just frigging jumped down there, Grigor gets to get a little look-see down in the cave too.

"Hrm. Now to find out what is darn important about this that they ... hey look, an archway. "

He watches bemused as Megiddo commits his act of vandalism but refrains to comment. Back up again, the loot gets sorted.

Grigor considers the evil cleric's Armour for a moment, then shakes his head.
"Since it is magic, it is probably better then mine and those symbols are nothing that a bit of paint won't take care of. But.. no armour spikes... *tsk tsk*... Okay, I might be interested in it. Later. But before we count our unlaid eggs, we should make sure we have vanquished all our foes lurking in the dark here."

Megiddo will do his usual sweep for auras, then make his way back up, unless he finds something of note.

We will need to return to destroy that obeliskeverything in this cave later.

    Moathouse: Planting 9, Late Morning

    Some Minutes Ago:
The entire cavern is awash in foul magics:
    • The damaged archway evidently retains functionality, as it continues to radiate a strong conjuration.
    • The pyramid-shaped carving shares the strong necromantic and evil auras of the obelisk.
    • The black sun carving possesses only faint enchantment and chaos auras.
    • There is a moderate conjuration aura attached to something where the obelisk tip meets the stone pillar.
    • Even the water collecting in the pool looks dangerous, as it carries with it the taint of necromancy and evil, though only faint levels.

(( Okay. Gonna assume you’ll examine those auras in more detail, if at all, later. Might as well clean up this time warp, and finish up the basic exploration… ))

(( Oh, and I forgot about the statue from the room above the obelisk chamber. As described, it seemed to have disappeared. But my intention was that they took it down and left it on top of the obelisk before sealing the chamber. So, yeah, it was there. ))

Moathouse: Planting 9, Late Morning/Early Afternoon
After the gear is stowed, Haunor agrees to help investigate the maze area discovered last night.

Tell leads the way into the earthen tunnels, using magic to search for hidden dangers before they can do any harm. The tunnels twist every which way, with the walls grown close or spreading apart seemingly at random. There are many places where the team has to take several minutes just to squeeze through tight openings. Through it all pervades a moist rotten stench like death.

Abruptly, the soft brown earth passage gives way to a cave carved from a strange, cloudy purple stone. The walls are roughly carved, with bits of stone jutting out at strange, seemingly impossible angles.

Dominating the cavern is a huge, square column. Each face is a different color and has a carving of a different figure: a jet black man in plate armor; a green man in a flowing robe; a red man in high boots, doublet, gauntlets, and drawn hood; and an indigo man in a pleated robe and sash, carrying a scepter. It is identical to the statue from the well room and obelisk chamber except for its massive size.

In front of this carving is a small altar of pourous, slightly corroded black rock atop a 1-foot-high platform of black stone streaked with violet.

The room is far colder than it out to be, possessing a strange and sudden chill that grips one’s heart, as well as one’s sanity. It is an evil chill.

    Grigor, human cleric

Grigor takes in the sight before him. The first thing he notices is the resemblance of the purple rock with the material that sprouted tentacles back in the hole. Not good. Well, evil actually but also probably a bad idea to get too close to.

"Huh, more of this weird rock. And an evil altar of sorts. And a puzzle. Oh well, I should be happy about that, Olidamarra likes puzzles..."

It seems like Grigor doesn't quite share his patron god's enthusiasm though.

Are there any obvious exits other than where we came in? (can't see the map from my iPhone). If not, I will start taking 20 wandering around the room (elf search for secret doors), while also doing a sweep with detect magic. I will also look at the carvings more closely, do any of my knowledge skills apply here? (arcane, planes, psionics)

    Moathouse: Early Afternoon

There are other entrances to the right and straight across from where the group entered this chamber.

Meggiddo is unable to figure out anything more interesting than the fact that the sigils on the robe of the indigo man are little more than arcane gibberish.

A careful examination of the statue reveals four small compartments, one just to the side of each figure. The black side contains a small, black pearl that radiates a moderate evocation aura when subjected to Megiddo’s magic detection. The green side has a small, black drum. The red side has a set of silver chimes. The indigo side has a small brazier with three cones of incense.

Also of note: The altar radiates strong necromancy and conjuration auras.

(( Technical note: detect magic requires concentration, so cannot be done simultaneously with searching. But that doesn’t matter much right now. ))

    Moathouse: Planting 9, Early Afternoon

Grigor realizes that the drum, chimes, brazier and incense, and possibly even the pearl may be used in some sort of ceremony around the altar. Even though they are not magical themselves, they could be required to activate the magic on the altar.

The statue itself remains a mystery, it doesn’t match anything other than potential references to broad story and myth archetypes—a Warrior, a Wizard or Priest, a masked man (perhaps a Spy or another Priest), and the hooded man (another Spy?). The characters’ individual colors may carry specific meaning to the cult that created it. One thing that is clear is that it was carved for people that value both Power and Secrecy.

    ---

After Lycar asks “How are we going to find them?” Haunor pipes up. “Unless these things are much more extensive, I’d think they should have found us by now. Not so certain we have any survivors right now. Not certain we got anyone who could be of use ‘less you can interrogate the dead.” He adds the last with a dark chuckle.
The Future just ain’t what it used to be.
