Re: Playground book club Do Not vote unless you are a member of this book club
I was tying between Small Gods and To Kill A Mockingbird, but decided that I should probably not suggest something and then vote for something else. So To Kill A Mockingbird is my choice, though Small Gods is awesomeness in book form.

I'd like to express my wish to join as well. I have access to a more than capable school library, so I should be able to get hold of most books.

Re: Playground book club Do Not vote unless you are a member of this book club
Well in reading two Pratchett books right now so im gonna vote for Star of the Sea.
And i don't know if it would make the pass of real world religion as it seems to make fun of hypocrisy more than anything. But its one of the ones i haven't read yet so i could be off. Also if anyone could do it without offending anyone its TP.Thanks to Linklele for my new avatar!

Well you have some interesting choices to read, and on the site its hard to discuss much without hitting up against a lot of he forum rules. Where do we go to look for a banner?

Brave New World (full text)
The others are still under copyright. There was once a chapter of Star of the Sea on the web as promotional material but the link seems to be broken.

Re: Playground book club Do Not vote unless you are a member of this club
All right, Im posting the one day warning. Hopefully the polls will be taken down sometime tomorrow and Ill announce the winning book then. I will also go over the supposed way this book club is going to be run and how we'll chat about the book. (This will just be my idea, the idea will probably need some fine tuning and editing. I will also be looking for some comments and suggestions about it, when I post everything up.)
So Vote Now If You Haven't Yet.Hey, I've found enlightenment. What have you found?

Re: Playground book club Do Not vote unless you are a member of this club
All right, sorry about the delay. Little family emergency. Anyways, I just got a copy of small gods and It looks acceptable to read. When enough people say they have the book, I will open up a new thread where we can start discussing the book.
I would like feedback on this Idea, but I think we should read the book together as a group and only read up to a certain page on a (maybe?)weekly basis so none of us can accidentaly give spoilers to people who haven't read as far as us faster readers.
So right now I would like people to do as Dragonus says aand sound off once you get the book. I would like to get everyone reading the book by Wednesday if at all possible, so I will open the thread on the first few chapters on Wednesday if all goes according to plan. For those of you who already have it, I suggest we don't read beyond page 75.Last edited by Belkarsbadside1; 2009-10-09 at 01:34 PM.

Re: Playground book club Do Not vote unless you are a member of this club
I don't know if I'll be able to get the book on time-- like I've said, I really don't have access to a great library or a major bookstore, and the two independent bookstores in town (I'm in college) don't have all that much. I'll try-- if necessary, I'll order online and have it shipped fast. But if I can't get it (or don't have time to read; I'm in the middle of midterms), I'll have to sit this one out.
Is that acceptable? I know some book clubs get weird about missing a book...SpoilerNo one asked you, Haley's Latent Bisexuality.

Small Gods?
I'll pick up a copy after work tomorrow.
Make sure to specify how far along the book we can discuss as we go along, otherwise some people will have a ruined experience via Accidental Spoiler.

Re: Playground book club Do Not vote unless you are a member of this club
All right, Ive looked at It and how about we go no further than the first eighty for now.
Also for the rest of you, please notify me if you get this book, because I want to get the discussion thread started ASAP.
By the way, so far I think this was a good pick and I think we hopefully will all enjoy this book
V: Your right. I have that one too. I took off a few pages so as we can preserve the book a bit longerLast edited by Belkarsbadside1; 2009-10-11 at 11:19 PM.

I've got the book
At the heart of all beauty lies something inhuman, and these hills, the softness of the sky, the outline of the trees at this very minute lose the illusory meaning with which we clothed them, henceforth more remote than a lost paradise.

Re: Playground book club Do Not vote unless you are a member of this club
I'm not a member of this club, and I know voting has ended, but...
You have a rule against heavily political books and then list a book by Ayn Rand as one of the options? It's rather difficult to find any author of fiction more political than her. It doesn't matter much now, since that book did not win, but if you ever decide to read it in the future, prepare for 99% of the discussion to revolve around politics.
Come to think of it, Brave New World is also pretty difficult to discuss without heavy political references... But, at least, Brave New World leaves some ambiguity and allows for different interpretations of its message.Last edited by Edric O; 2009-10-12 at 10:21 PM.
