Also: it's not so much that elves are boring, as that they are almost exactly the same in every incarnation since Tolkien.

In the LotR movies, with the exception of named ones, elves struck me as a troop of faceless automatons. Since then they've always rubbed me as either an entire race of mary-sues, incredibly pretentious, have an amazing lack of personality and substance, or some combination of the above. Obviously I do recognize exeptions, but this is just my interpretation.

On the bright side, they're not the Spellscale Hive Mind.

There are a ton of was to make nameless charecters non faceless. The easiest one is the guilty kill. The person in the past the hero regrets killing for whatever reason.

I've got Kayl pretty much all written out...in my head. I'm trying to think of a way to make [pronoun] more understandable. Suggestions are welcome as always.

It'll be tricky to establish this in the comic without shoehorning it in, so i'll just basically say that the nobility of the world, with some exceptions (Lord Magebane, Princess Marnia) are all at least Epic levelled. Torn knows this. He had the axe over his head. Obviously the primarchess saw it coming, and was expecting the axe to come down.
To answer your question: He kicked because she didn't expect it.
