No, it was me being shot for being pedantic. Does that not happen on these forums? My forum sniper/exgirlfriend followed me.

Re: Order of the Stick: The Manga
Manga is a type of comic, yes, but comics have connotations of childishness, in America and England at least, while Manga and anime are aimed at teenagers and adults. Thus is why I am a little incendiary on the difference.

Re: Order of the Stick: The Manga
Most people I know consider it the other way around: manga has connotations with pokemon and stuff and is considered very childish, while comics are also considered childish, but that kind of childish that's still okay for adults to enjoy.
I use cyan when I'm being ambivalent, greenish grey when I'm mostly serious, but with a hint of sarcasm, purple when I'm flirting with you, blue when I go colourblind, and light green when I'm twice as ambivalent as when I use cyan.

Re: Order of the Stick: The Manga
See, I normally encounter it the other way round. Lots of manga and anime deals with life, death and sometimes even Philosophy: Fullmetal Alchemist is a good example. Blood, gore, affronts against nature: Not what you'd see in a normal comic.
I do admit that not all comics deserve that reputation of childishness though. There are quite a few with similar audiences to Manga.
(Also, the pokemon manga is kickass. The anime is utter fail and an insult to the word anime, and even to the word cartoon which better suits it)Recent Homebrew: The Socialite | The Crystalline: Memory Altering Construct Race | Sanguine Hand, a ToB Discipline of blood and cruelty

Re: Order of the Stick: The Manga
The following is not aimed at anyone in this thread or in the immediate internet-vicinity. I just feel it is a good opportunity to rant a bit about a subject that's been bothering me for a good while, so please bear with me (spoiler for length and, well, ranting)
Spoiler
And it is exactly that connotational difference that makes me want to smash furniture. I like anime, I don't hate manga (though I do tend to dislike the choice of pacing and simplicity of the drawings present in most manga), but I absolutely hate the modern notion that the only acceptable, non-childish flavour of geek is worshipping all things japanese.
I mean, come on, japan is just like the rest of the world. They produce some brilliant stuff, but a majority of their stuff is just sad and uninspired (again, like the rest of the world's stuff). Most people tend to miss this mediocrity, however, because they can't get past the 'omg this is so exotic' part.
Comics are comics. I just can't wrap my head around why people tend to think that manga is something cooler. The same thing happened with the word 'graphic novel', some time ago, though even that is somewhat better, since it tends to encompass a wider variety of work than just the ones that imitate the Japanese way of doing things.
So, in summary: manga=comics. It's not a genre, or a weird alien form of entertainment that's like comics but cool. It's just...comics. It comes in all kinds of varieties, aimed at all kinds of people. It flucutates wildly in quality, like anything else out there
Japan is not magic, is all I'm saying.
Back on topic, then. Keep up the good work, Elagune, I really enjoy your take on the Order of the StickLast edited by Comet; 2010-04-27 at 10:08 AM.

Re: Order of the Stick: The Manga
No, its not, but it is one of the few places animation isn't forced to live in a ghetto. Few western cartoons and comics actually dare rise above the level of entertaining children. This is why the Watchmen was so amazing. Over in Japan, it wouldn't have stood out near as much.

Re: Order of the Stick: The Manga
I didn't mean to imply manga is better than comics. I like comics, even the really childish one, but I agree with Kyeudo that japanese anime/manga tends to be aimed at older audiences.
However, I must raise my hands and admit that I don't read many comics.
My argument is based on the difference between anime and cartoons, which is far less arguable. Almost all western cartoons are aimed at teenagers at the oldest, whereas many anime (including hentai, but also including non-hentai) are aimed at teenagers and up instead. I assumed that this held true for manga/comics.
But you're right, manga and comics are far more similar and the difference is mainly style-I just suffer from ZOMG JAPAN a little.

Re: Order of the Stick: The Manga
Have you ever read a Hamtaro manga? Have you ever seen one in the places you normally buy manga? They're just not exported.
Meanwhile, the main comics companies aim their products mostly at guys who live in their parents' basements, not kids (kids get the spinoff stuff). Marvel and DC even have Japanese artists drawing for them.
One of the main differences is that most manga have a single artist and writer (who are often the same person), and are thus more consistent. They also tend to be more self-contained rather than being concerned with the status quo, and more often have permanent changes to the characters. People complain that Dragonball went on too long, but how long has Superman been around?Last edited by Prime32; 2010-04-27 at 01:25 PM.

I'd still call it manga. XD Especially considering, you know, the title?

Re: Order of the Stick: The Manga
Ah, but if you read that Japanese style it's manga! If you read it Chinese style it's manhua! Now I'm all confused.
But seriously, I label my stuff manga because everything I know about sequential art I got from manga, and so it's more reminiscent of manga and less like Western comics. I want people to have an idea of what they're going to see when they see my stuff. It's not like I think manga is superior to comics.
To-may-to, to-mah-to, it's a bunch of pictures that tell a story. Doesn't matter what you call it.

Re: Order of the Stick: The Manga
Eh, you can just use manhua. People usually call Korean stuff manhwa rather than manga, though that term would be better known than the Chinese one. Still, it's used enough in discussion that there's a TVTropes page.
