Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
I'm basically the exact opposite. I had to deal with customer service/tech support over the phone for my laptop once or twice. I was practically ready to vomit from nervousness by the time we hung up.

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
I think it's partly because it's something I pretty much never do.
In fact, it occurs to me I'm generally fine calling my best friend, because I'm used to talking to him over the phone.
Come to think of it, I guess it's insecurities. If there's any insecurity or worry or whatever I might have in connection with the person in question, it will automatically be worse over the phone than IRL."'But there's still such a lot to be done...'
YES. THERE ALWAYS IS."

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
I watched it when you posted it, Phase. I just didn't post a response for it because I was distracted (I've been like this the past couple of days).
*sigh* Finally called him (my mind's telling me "See? That wasn't so hard, was it?", and yet it will be just as difficult to call him the next time I do). One thing that I've noticed is that I always seem to trip over my own words at the start of the conversation, but once it gets going I'm fine. I guess all of the anxiety that I build up before the call messes with my speech.

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
Not as bad as communicating solely via text, since with phone calls we at least still have tones and inflections and such to give some indication asto how we feel and what we mean.
Meta-conversation is, of course, essential when communicating via anything other than face to face conversation. And even then you can still need it for any number of reasons.
Slaya: Well, I'm sure if you keep at it, that it will in fact get easier. Practice makes perfect, or at least a habit, after all. Since you are capable of enjoying it after all. Like establishing an exercise routine.
*hugs Phase*
Funnily enough, having to answer the phone and being given a basic formula by my mother to do so made it so that I didn't really bat an eye when I had to deal with people on the phone as a kid, so I've never really minded phone conversations except during lulls. Lulls are not fun when on the phone, especially if it's a girl that one is interested in or dating.

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
I am nervous when calling for a job application, or something really serious, but otherwise I'm ok.
I can never hear my cellphone ring though, cause either it's noisy or I'm playing music with noise blocking headphones.Step 1: Get workers to make goods for you.
Step 2: Sell the goods for a higher amount than what you pay the workers.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit!

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
I text far too often.
EDIT: Want some Hindustani-meets-electronic Indian music? I promise it's amazing. Here.
Dhol Foundation is a band almost entirely of traditional Hindustani drummers. Plus a guitarist. Plus a western drumset drummer. Plus the singer. Plus some people doing the electronic stuff. Plus an OD of awesome. And more.Last edited by randman22222; 2010-01-21 at 09:52 PM.

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
I usually text when I think someone might not be able to talk right then or when I don't want an immediate reply.
Which makes me wonder how to segue to an actual phone conversation just to double check and see if the other person is meaning to flirt with me when a text conversation gets fast paced and at least seems to me to seem like there's some things being implied...

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
We were allowed to answer the phone in one of two set patterns:
a)
me: "Hello, may I help you?"
them: "May I speak to X?"
me: "I'm sorry, he/she's not available right now. May I take a message?"
or
b)
me: "Hello, may I help you?"
them: "May I speak to X?"
me: "Sure. Just a moment."
Yeah, very formal. We were never allowed to say that our parents weren't home, either. When I hit high school or so I started answering with just "hello?" but then I realized that whenever I did that, people thought I was my mum.
Now that we have caller ID (for years we only had it on one phone, and in a house as big as ours, chances were good that wasn't the one you'd get to), I use either one depending on who calls. If it's the grumpy tenant who calls Mum every other day to complain about nonexistent issues I pitch my voice very high and say "Hello, may I help you?"
But if it's someone more harmless calls I pitch my voice low and say "Hello?", then pause and wait for the inevitable "Hi, <my mom>!"

I always answer with "Hello, <Last Name> Family Household, <First Name> speaking."
If I don't people think I'm my dad. I have a REALLY deep voice, and it sounds even deeper on the phone.

I just say "Hello?" in a quick way. When I say that, it sounds like me mum, but when I start really talking, people recognize my distinctive voice.

Please feel free to PM me any thoughts on my homebrew (or comment in the thread if it's not too old).

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
I follow the 'Hello, may I help you?' model, and often get distracted for middle brother, who is twelve. We both think that our voices sound nothing alike, but...
I mean, there's the whole deal where his voice is much higher than mine.
But oh, I just realised that I pitch my voice rather high over the phone, because I used to get mistaken for my mother (which is really a 'WTF?!' type thing). Elementary, my dear Watson. My preferred pronouns: they, them, their

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
I find, "Hello?" works well, especially when it's quizzical. Of course, that's when I don't know who it is. I remember a friend of mine called, and I answered with "I'm not home, stop calling"

Funnily enough, I've been losing a bit of my phone skills due to only ever having to deal with people calling my cell phone... So it's only wrong numbers who hang up as soon as they hear a guy's voice or people I've already gotten chummy with.

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
I find it amusing that in two opportunities to get the personal pronoun at the end of the sentence right, you missed both times.
[pedantry]
To simply determine which pronoun to use in a sentence with multiple subjects or objects, remove the non-substituted one and decide which would be proper, then add the non-substituted one back in. To whit...
...belongs to [omitted] me.../...belongs to Nameless and me...
[/pedantry]
My apologies for this insertion of nonsense about which no one cares. Please return to your regularly scheduled banter.Want to meet some of the most awesome people on the internet? Come to the Baltimore/DC Area RenFest Meetup 2012!

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
SpoilerI make the first post.
Bob S. (codename) makes a post recognizing me and proves it with details about my personal life.
Bob S. confirms that he goes to my school because he has details about my school that would be difficult to find out otherwise.
Bob S. gives me a confirmed clue:
8085: C]---->((( L THU
8085 is confirmed BOBS, but not related to his name, but related to an event. BS is probably Bake Sale, and BO is probably Band/Orchestra or Build On, school organizations.
L THU is lunch, Thursday.
The C] is C building and stairs, arrow is just an arrow, and the ((( are a set of curved steps at my school known as the senior steps.
Next day:
I go to the steps at lunch, don't see him, can't find the bake sale until the second half of lunch, and due to the fact there was a crowd, maybe missed him.
Bake Sale was by Build On, so BOBS is confirmed.
Second poster is given codename Bob S. due to the 8085 deal, but that is confirmed not his name because it is confirmed not related to his initials.
Pictures were provided as proof that I went to the locales important.
Above is a story that happened to me, I thought it was interesting, but it might not be, hence spoiler tags. Also, sorta long.
So I'm living in an ARG, because I get secret messages from somebody in code. No, I'm not crazy, I just spend a lot of time on 4chan and somebody specifically sent me a code, I solved it, circumstances meant that the meeting place was moved, thus, trying again.I play World of Warcraft, NeverWinter Nights, and First Life.

Re: Jibar's Random Banter #137: Return of the Cat-Muffin
I just spent the last 2 and a half hours playing Family Feud on the Wii with my sister, and I have two things to say.
"Monster" is not a swamp animal.
"Bird" is not something to be afraid of in the amazon when you are underwater.
That is all.
