That is supposedly what the school wants... Then again, this is the same school that still has houses and prefects and you have to wear a blazer and tie and the huge privelige you get for being in 6th form is that you get to wear brown shoes so I guess you're right. It's not like I expected to actually do anything this holiday.
And yes, I really meant to go to bed three hours ago. Stupid forums being so entertaining.BANG → !

I really can't understand this obsession people have with studying. Assuming you have actually learned what you are going to be tested on recently, you should be fine if you properly learned it. And it isn't a very tightly timed test. That is always the worst part, being able to derive all the formulas you need, but not having near enough time to actually do so.

I guess I'm just lucky: I can pull A's and 100's out of my ass with no studying whatsoever. In one of my most current tests, only missed one question, I also got partial credit for mistaking one related mineral for another (chalcopyrite for pyrite, in my defense, they look all but identical; except that chalcopyrite is more yellow than pyrite)

Re: Curly's Rambunctious and Erudite Random Banter #140
So, I've been doing work on and off as a substitute teacher at a local Junior and Senior High School (kidlets between the ages 12-19), pretty much regularly until the start of this year, when due to economic reasons of the Municipality they placed a ban on hiring substitutes. Only if the time that a teacher is absent is more than three days, are they allowed to hire one.
That in itself is quite fine, I've been studying for my university entrance exam more or less since the ban came into force. And recently have started a prep cource for the exam, said cource is inconviniently held in a city ~130 km from where I'm currently sitting 3/week, but thanks to a car I can manage. It's only a bit tiring.
Now, I got contacted a while back by a Senior High School language teacher (German and Swedish, to be exact) if I could do some teaching for the whole of next week (from the time of this post that is, so starting on the 19th). I got the short list of details, and said that I could handle it. I've taught her classes before, nothing I can't handle.
However, with my cource ongoing at the same time, I know I'm going to exhaust myself since I have to prepare for each and every one of the lessons I'm going to teach. This has in the past led to me coming to work usually at 7 o'clock, if my classes start at 8. I've already confirmed that the last classes I teach, would, at worst, end around 3 pm, which would mean I'd have to immediately start driving to get to the cource on time.
As the cource begins at 5 pm, and lasts until 8, together with the time to drive back this would lead to my daily schedule for the week looking something like this:
6 am: wake up
7 am: get to work
8 - 12: teach, lunch at either 11 or 12
12 -3 pm: teach
3 pm - 5 pm: drive to get to the cource
5 pm - 8 pm: cource work
8 pm - 10 pm: drive back home
And considering how I'm enough of a danger to others while behind the steering wheel, I'm worried of what happens when I'm drop dead tired.
Writing all of this somewhere has made me feel slightly better. [/Long Post]Oz Bezarius avatar by Kwarkpudding.

Re: Curly's Rambunctious and Erudite Random Banter #140
Rather than study for GCSE's I watched daytime TV and actually made a pact with a friend that we wouldn't revise until we had both completed Metal Gear Solid 3 and some other game that was stupidly long but so crap I've forgotten it. Needless to say I panicked, but did pretty well.
However my standards for an good grade seem to be generally lower than the rest of the scholastic world, so this is probably not advised.Piratebold-Bard by Elder Tsofu | Backer #121 of the Giantitp Kickstarter | My homebrew

Life is the worst game I've ever played. The graphics are ugly, the gameplay ranges from mind-numbingly boring to hellishly frustrating and whoever wrote this plot should be shot. I can't believe I wasted my time and money on this piece of crap.
2/10. Would not play again.

Also it's so glitchy. Your character can freeze up for no reason, and can even have a stat defect at the beginning of the game.

The game community is awful too. Want help on a quest? Well screw you!
If you're not in a decent guild then you have no chance. I'm a fan of challenging games, but it really is impossible to solo most of the dungeons.
The only reason I can see anyone playing it is for the minigames. But unlocking them is more than enough hassle to put you off the whole thing.Last edited by Player_Zero; 2010-04-13 at 05:31 AM.

Reintroduce corporal punishment back into schools. It will make everything incredibly exciting.

Re: Curly's Rambunctious and Erudite Random Banter #140
Isn't capital punishment a tad extreme
There will always be the argument that strict discipline will leave physical and emotional scarring upon those so affected. One camp maintains the position that nothing good will ever come out of it, that the only affectation it creates is resentment towards all others. The other endorses strict discipline to the point that they say not only does it have no negative consequences, but that the person will be made all the more better for it. Not surprisingly, the debate is passionate and raging still.
A way to look at whether discipline should be condoned in schools is to have a look at student behaviour. If they are all acting like bastards and if they cannot be controlled at all, then you would want to bring back corporal punishment not only ASAP but also make it compulsory.Last edited by Amiel; 2010-04-13 at 09:28 AM.

Re: Curly's Rambunctious and Erudite Random Banter #140
Mild electrocution administered through the chair when they act up. Eventually they'll get the message.
What I don't get is why they even bother to show up to school at all if all they're going to do is **** about. Why not just go somewhere else and be just as much of a tool but not bothering others/being bothered by teachers.
Obviously I'd never say it to one of them (that'd lead to a stabbing), but it's kinda fun to realise that at the end of the day they are still dependant on their parents, they'd be screwed if they had to feed/take care of themselves. So they go to school and act like *******s because they are, but they still need to follow mummy and daddy's rules about going to school.Piratebold-Bard by Elder Tsofu | Backer #121 of the Giantitp Kickstarter | My homebrew

Re: Curly's Rambunctious and Erudite Random Banter #140
So I totally bummed out on my friends last night. Which, to me, is pretty much the worst thing a person can do. Basically, it was DnD night, and I had a ton of School Work to get through, so rather than put up the false hope that I might get it done in time to participate, I just focused on my school work. Lo and Behold, I actually DID show up...roughly an hour and 15 minutes after the game was supposed to start, and 45 minutes after they had given up. Turns out that only two players showed up. <.<;
So next week I'll have to try to make it to the session...but I still have a lot of work to do, and at least one MAJOR project is due on that day. ;p So I may have to cancel again. Which is a shame, because I really like playing that character, and I'm getting fewer and fewer chances to do so.

Re: Curly's Rambunctious and Erudite Random Banter #140
Ah, but that idea comes from in the second camp. The first camp would argue that corporal punishment makes such issues worse, not better (just better in certain situations). Because if you use corporal punishment, then that is the only thing that will make them behave and so when there is no threat of it they do whatever the hell they want. Yeah? Much better to figure out a way to make them self-moderate.
Related: When I was middle-school-age-ish my dad mentioned offhandedly that his fifth grade teacher had kept a paddle by the desk. I was SHOCKED. I knew corporal punishment was once a part of the American school system, but I hadn't realized that it continued into the '70s.

Re: Curly's Rambunctious and Erudite Random Banter #140
Not just the 70s, it most likely would have continued into the 80s as well; although as society progressively became more PC, the practice was deemed offensive and contentious. There are actually no studies that can conclusively prove that corporal punishment actually does more harm than good.
I would argue that it's not just about discipline anymore, the little blighters epically fail from lack of respect; even in uni, we see us students talking over and on top of the lecturers, tutors, not paying attention in class, throwing stuff around. Students need to be taught proper respect and corporal punishment can be deemed to be the most effective and efficient way and method to teach it. The question is how would you control a room filled with rabid kids when talking does not work? Self moderation and kids, it's like an oxymoron
If society wishes to retain its PCness and is adverse to its practice, it can always be used as an option of last resort.Last edited by Amiel; 2010-04-13 at 10:11 AM.
