You CAN designate something to move it away, but you SHOULDN'T. It's just a waste of dwarf-power. Later, you can make them move things to a rock stockpile near your craftsdwarfs, but until you get in lategame, it's not worth it, imho.

Well, if I don't move it away I have absolutely zero room to put in anything. I can't fit any workshops or anything that takes up more than one space.

You should be able to build over rocks. I've never had a problem building over rock. Boulders, on the other hand, are a problem, but those are only ever found outside. When you try to place the building, are you sure it's not letting you?

.......thank you....I just made the assumption that I wouldn't be able to build on top of rocks, well, you know what they say about assuming.

    Thanks again.

Is there any way to designate areas that are sodden with blood and vomit to be cleaned up? I just fought off my first ambush (successfully), but my entryway is...rather unpleasant looking.

    allrighty, another question.

I've got my stoneworking shop cluttered from too many blocks, I designated a stockpile to move them to, but nobody is moving them so my mason is making stuff really slowly. Any suggestions?

Is the stockpile full, for example of stone left after digging out the room it's in? You'll have to tell your dwarves to move that rock somewhere else, or put the stockpile somewhere less cluttered. (like outside) Also, I would suggest making wooden bins if you're making a lot of blocks. They let your dwarves stick a whole bunch of blocks into a single tile and move them around all at once by picking up the bin. Then, whenever you start construction with the blocks, make a stockpile for them near the construction site, so your masons don't have to go all the way to the main stockpile for every single block.

I made a custom stockpile to put only blocks on, and it is completely empty, it's also outside for now just so I can get it out of the way.

If you do want to get rid of the rocks, for example when you're making a stockpile room, you can mass designate the rocks to be dumped, like so:

    1. First, you'll have to tell your dorfs where to dump things. Press [i] to make an Area. Now draw the area. Size doesn't matter, so don't make it too large. If you want your dorfs to dump things into magma, make a 2x1 area, with one tile over the magma and the other on land. When you've drawn the area, press [g] to make it a garbage dump.

    2. Now designate the rocks to be dumped. You can dump things one by one by looking at them with [k] and then dumping them with [d], but with rocks it's faster to mass designate. Press [d][b][d], and draw a rectangle over the rocks. Your dorfs will now dump them all into the garbage dump you designated.

Just be wary as this will mark EVERYTHING in the area to be dumped, not just rocks. Also, it's generally preferable to dumb rocks into a pit or just into a single tile somewhere in your fortress, probably near the center or the stonecrafting workshops, because once they're dumped you can un-forbid them and then you dwarves can use them for various crafting projects or construction.

Some consider quantum stockpiles an exploit, though.

Then again, I usually use another exploit, the Atom Smasher, to get rid of rocks and other rubbish.

And for completeness: The non-exploity (and time consuming) way to move rocks is to set up stone stockpiles to hold them (iirc: [p][s] draw rectangle) . Your dwarves will automatically move any loose rocks into stone stockpiles, provided there is space... and remember that each loose stone sucks up 1 tile, so it will eat up a lot of space, but the rocks will at least be where you want it.

For added control you can specify stockpiles to hold certain types rocks by changing their settings.

For further completeness, the other non-exploity (and even more time-consuming) way is to designate a mason team to turn the stones into blocks, since the latter can be stacked into bins, for reduced space consumption. Disadvantages include need for bins and that blocks can't be turned into crafts or furniture; you can only use them for construction work.

    Look what I found: Linky!

It's a utility that keeps track of the game's log, and plays sounds whenever certain phrases come up. You can define your own sound cues, so I made it play a wilhelm scream whenever someone dies, a falling sound and a splat whenever someone falls to his death, and a dramatic chord whenever there's a goblin ambush. It also scans the battle logs, so it can also make battle sound effects like arrows flying, swords hitting armour, and so forth.

I believe that using blocks instead of raw stone increases the value of said constructions and thus your overall fortress value too correct?

That would be the case, but I think the point he was making is that you can't use stone blocks to make stone crafts or mugs or whatever--they can ONLY be used in construction.

I've decided to try my hand at modding DF. I'm starting with something relatively simple by adding some growable plants - I'm planning to add some more domesticated animals later, but the animal raws do look complicated.

Anyway, I've made a bunch of vegetables so far. Did I do this right? Or will my game explode if I test them?

Edit: After failing a few times, I've managed to get my vegetables to work. They didn't work when they were in their own separate file; I had to add them to plants_standard.txt to make them show up in the game. Now my dorfs are drinking vodka and eating borscht.

Another edit: I've added a few more fruits, and beets can now be milled to make beet sugar. If anyone want to try my mod, just copy the code from the above spoiler and stick it in your Dwarf Fortress/raw/objects/plants_standard.txt file. Don't replace anything - just add it to the end of the file.

So... Anyone ever get Marksdwarves to work properly? Mine wont pick up ammo and end up running into combat and getting themselves killed in hilarious ways.

I know there was a bug with ammo in bins. Not sure if it was ever fixed.

Well, I'm not using the most recent version... I'm using the one before that, but I dont have any ammo bins... Hell, I don't have any ammo stockpiles yet, my bolts are just sitting around, rotting between my craftsdwarfs workshops and trade depot for now.

Chances are I'm going to abandon and start from scratch when the newest version comes out anyways... Lack of planning had put me 7ish years in without making any real progress with anything. The only accomplishment I have to speak of is a huge field of cage traps and over three times as many prisoners as dwarves. Still, I'd like to get my marksdwarves to work properly if possible, even if I am going to restart.

Any hunters and marksdwarves have to have quivers in order to carry bolts now...or at least that is what I'm seeing. See if making them some quivers works for them.

Also if they are outside, they may be bugged until moved onto an ammo stockpile...somethign about gathering refuse from outside, except its not refuse. Dorfs are weird,.

They have quivers and refuse is already set to be gathered from outside so I don't think its either of those... regardless, I'll make an indoor ammo stockpile (no bins allowed) and see if that changes anything.

Edit: Sounds like there'll be a new version tomorrow... Cool.
