Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I've never seen destroying caravans to be reliable enough to start a war. You need to upgrade to a barony and then kill their diplomats. That seems to work every time.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
In adventure mode, how do you use the more advanced wrestling maneuvers (eye gouge, limb break)? I've got it to work on other dwarfs, but not on wolfs. Do I have to go through and edit the raws? if so what tag is it and where do I put it?

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I was just fighting a goblin. After a few slashes and stabs, I got a good opportunity to badly wound the goblin... by scratching his hand.
You scratch The Goblin Pikeman in the right hand, tearing the muscle through the giant bat leather right glove!
The Goblin Pikeman gives in to pain.
The Goblin Pikeman falls over.
I love the new combat system.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
@Necroticplague: You can gouge the eyes of anything that has them by grabbing its head with your hand.
As for limb-breaking, the victim needs to have joints to break. If things are as I recall, only humanoids have joints by default. I would readily post a solution, and indeed I was modding one, but I'm sadly deprived of my laptop at this juncture in time.
You can still pinch grasped bits and tear them off, though. I once beat a hydra half to death with a leg I tore from a live buzzard. It was very dramatic, until it caught me.
After it caught me, I was reminded of that time I got stuck in a river with a leopard.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
So... I've been doing a bit of thinking...
By the time you get a king, your "Fortress" is really more of a Dwarven Capitol than a fortress... However, the layout of most isn't suitable for a city of any kind...
So I've been trying to come up with a layout for a fortress that would double as a suitable underground capitol...
What I'm thinking is digging out a fairly large area... 5-7 Z levels and massive ground area. Depending on how the cavern layout is on my site, this could be made alot easier and faster... After that, I construct buildings... A massive tavern with free beds on the second floor, a proper dwelling for the king with tons of treasure stockpiled underneath, a prison, an arena, buildings for various industries...
And the reason it is all constructed rather than carved out of the stone is because I like to use constructed ice. Also, the streets will be paved with gold.
Think I should go for it?
Also, Arachu... Long time no see...Remember back in the old version when we made all those mod races? Fun times, fun times.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Well, I haven't started yet (picky with my starting 7... Gotta find a good candidate for Mayor and thus Baron later with a favorable list of things he likes for easier mandates), but heres the location I have in mind...
(Large image)
Spoiler
I'm using a slightly modified tileset... Its essentially the default resized to be 12x12 tiles instead of 8x12 so everything is nice and square... Then I took that and redrew a few tiles to my liking.
The location is nice and flat, has plenty of flux and should have a good amount of iron as well (though I'll be bringing plenty on the embark and goblins can supply the rest if it doesn't). Plenty of plant life as well... for now anyways... I'll be clearcutting it just to piss off the elves when I start.
Honestly, the only way it could fit my preferences better is if it was savage... Untamed Wilds instead of Wilderness. Ah well, can't have everything...
Edit: Oh, and the civ is called "The Mighty Gears." How freaking Dwarfy is that?Last edited by TheSummoner; 2010-11-12 at 02:22 PM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Cool Civ name. Although the site seems a bit genaric. Just a cold forest with a stream to the south. Then again I tend to embark on volcanoes with flux near the top.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Ah, well I tend to prefer areas with a flat surface since it lets me see the entire area without worrying about Z levels... Don't want any Goblins sneaking up on me.
And I think I found my expedition leader.
Spoiler
Steel and Bolts seem to be the only mandatable likes, both of which are very doable. Should be fun.
And heres my embark point.
Spoiler
Seven brave Dwarves, leaving their home for enemy territory. Surrounded on all sides by the greatest threat to dwarvenkind... Trees!Last edited by TheSummoner; 2010-11-12 at 03:27 PM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Sounds like the perfect Baron candidate. Did you have to save scum much to get an embark dwarf like that?
Also I understand wanting a flat area. It is much easier to plan things out. If magma pipes were still in the game I'd probably still embark in flat areas. Now volcanoes (and the resulting mountainous terrain) are my only hope for surface magma. If God had wanted you to live he would not have created me!

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Save scum, nah. I just looked them over and exited the game without embarking if I couldn't find one I liked. No saving or backups required and it gives you a new set of Dwarves every time. =P
I've got...
A brewer/expedition leader (the one who provides the booze leads them all!)
A miner
A woodcutter
A grower
A mechanic
A mason/building designer
A carpenter/woodcrafter
Right now, I'm laying the foundation for the aboveground section of the fortress while theres still ice to build with. After I get that in, I'll use pumps to get mud for a starter farm and start the real digging.
Edit: Early Autumn, year 201.
It appears I have underestimated how cold this map is... I was unable to set up my pump before the river re-froze and food is low. With 15 dwarves to feed and no farm, my only hope lies in the caravans. When the next thaw comes, I should be able to set up a proper farm, but until then the fate of my dwarves depends on hmuch food and drink the dwarven and elven caravans bring. It sickens me to think I may have to rely on elves for survival...
Edit 2: Damn, they didn't even last until the caravans...
I'm restarting, smaller embark (6x6 instead of 8x8), a bit more food and booze and heading for the caverns straight off...Last edited by TheSummoner; 2010-11-12 at 06:15 PM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Yes.
In addition, I suggest waterfalls in said arena. Not only does it look pretty, but it makes cleanup a lot easier.
Also, Arachu... Long time no see...Remember back in the old version when we made all those mod races? Fun times, fun times.
It's also worth noting that my laptop has been 'fixed'... Which here means that it has no sound or modem, and that after updating it started claiming to be counterfit.
Silver lining: I just bet I can convince my parents to get a newer one. If I can, I'll be able to play DF maximum site-size.
Also, that time with the leopard was indeed fun, but not as fun as that time I tripped and fell into about 20 or so zombie-troglodytes. Took 'em forever to hit my throat, I tells ya'...

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Ice for the challenge. Gold because my dwarves are gonna show visiting caravans just who rules this world.
Hell, once the underground is secure, surface visits will be purely for recreation and occasional clearcutting for the sole purpose of pissing off the elves.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
You should build a giant trapdoor.
Provoke the Ears with industry, and drop them far enough to knock 'em all out.
Afterward, you now have both a source of entertainment (in the arena) and of training (across a trench).
If you mod for cannibalism, then Elfhunting becomes a business all its own.
Hah, hah, hah.
'Ears'. I'm so clever.

Nah, the only thing the ears are good for is stealing food and exotic pets from. I'm hoping for suberries and giant eagles... If I got both, that would be amazing...

... If only you could train eagles to carry/drop Axedwarves
On a side note, one of my fortresses (that one that got massacred) had its production severely impeded by wandering Snailmen. And it occured to me: why is a Snailman threatening in any way? Their arms are soft, they wouldn't be unbearably ugly, their voices would be tolerable...
I mean, they don't even have terrible knowledge! They just make everything kind of messy until the next rain.
I'm gonna go renew my disbelief now!

Why WOULD snailmen impede you? They're like the least threatening creature in the game... Hell, I don't even understand why they only appear on savage maps considering they don't really DO anything.
Same goes for slugmen... just salt them and move on!

They're not even aggressive. I half expect the impediment due to them running some manner of union.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Aw, as a new player, I've had my first casualty. His squad was guarding a weaver while he was collecting spider silk, and then a troll attacked. As such, he died a good death, doing his duty, protecting the civilians.
I've made a basement to the barracks and put his coffin there so that the soldiers can rest assured that even in death they will be a part of the military. That is the dwarven way.And then I ordered a statue put into the long hallway that leads to the caverns.I suspect this is the first of many such statues that will adorn that place.Maybe it'll make the ones who have business in the caverns be more cautious.
We will never forget him.Last edited by Ranielle; 2010-11-12 at 10:45 PM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Dwarf Fortress has officially stolen my weekend... I started getting into it on Friday, didn't stop til' 4am, then kept going all day Saturday. >.>
Two thoughts -
I'm a tidy overseer, and hate seeing clumps of useless stone clogging every room / hallway; stockpiles don't work since they fill up far too fast, so I've been setting up dumps for this purpose. However, I've had to manually go square-by-square and set it for dumping, is there any mass-way of doing it?
Equipping the military is... an arcane process. I'm surely going to die to anything that comes by.Ask not for whom the wolves howl, they howl for thee.

On that subject, how do you get dumping to work in the first place? I've tried on several occasions, but the damn vagabonds never touched a pebble of it.
Perhaps they're being especially lazy?

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
You have to designate an area to be garbage dump, rather than a refuse pile.
To mass designate items to be dumped, use (d) (b) (d) in that order ;]Last edited by Ranielle; 2010-11-14 at 10:58 AM.
