Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Well, here's my randomly designed fort in the summer of its second year. http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-10055-pricecrypts
Yes, I am aware of the line of puppies along the eastern edge of the map. No, it doesn't show up like that in the actual game. The map compressor must have done that. A byproduct of all the tinkering I did with the raws, would be my guess.
I have only the vaguest of ideas about how the rooms are all connected, or how to get anywhere.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Alright. I've just started playing some Dwarf Fortress and I've come to conclusion that cage traps are awesome. I've caged a giantess and a couple of goblin thieves. What do I do with them?

Either put them in a pit and make em fight or magma and lots of it.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Or put 'em in a cake as a pleasant surprise for unmarried nobles.
... Though, you might be able to coerce them into defending positions or wiping out caverns. Try digging a moat to keep them outside with, or find a way to drop them into a bit of otherwise-inaccessible yet promising cavern from overhead.
... Unless they won't kill the cavern beasts... But that giantess would make a good watchhound.
Oh! Build an absurdly-tall tower and coordinate cage-openings to make it rain Goblins!

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I have discovered this game, and I pronounce it awesome!
Also, I have an idea that I consider awesome, but as a humble noob I wish to confer with
Ahem. :smallblush:
Would it be possible to pump magma up a very, very tall pillar, then arrange it into a system where you could open a series of (magma proof) trapdoors, dropping the magma ontolocal wildlifescreaming goblins? Like some sort of orbital cannon of mass destruction?

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Possible, yes, but with the way magma works now, I dunno how effective it would be.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
The orbital magma cannon is a fun mega project. I don't have the patience to build anything like that, but others do.
And they are awesome! If God had wanted you to live he would not have created me!

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
My current DF Project is a 66X44 Stone tower to house the entire fortress. I'm not really picky about the stone as long as it's the same color. I know some people have a tendency to like to make it out of the same material(Obsidian) but i'm not going to put that limit on me because it's tricky enough as it is(It's gonna be a BIG Tower). It's not really going amazingly well right now since i don't want my fortress underground and build the tower and move everything there so it's fairly tricky for me. I have the first floor maybe....3/5 done and it's half-way through the second year.

Yeah... project bolter is a success.
I got bored. and modded in bolters... the result was messy. Many dead elves.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Okay, so
One of my military dwarves dropped a meal on the ground. And its just sitting there, rotting, filling the room with miasma
This, as you might understand, is bad.
None of the other dwarves will touch it and take it outdoors to the refuse pile because its owned. How can I get this thing out of the hallway before it traumatizes everyone.Visit the Chocolate Hammer IRC channel!

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I'm glad to see that hasn't died off here.
Can you believe people are actually sick of that over in the bay12 forums?
Sick of annihilating the cannibal tree-men.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I just hope elves get proper sites in the next version so I can equip a dwarf with an adamantine weapon and armor and go slaughter them all. Every single one.
Otherwise, I have never really cared for elf killing sprees.

Its true! Every disaster not brought on by poor planning and unsafe handling of magma is the fault of the Elves!

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
The only reason i enjoy agrroing and slaughtering elves is because they just have their paultry wooden weapons and armor. This makes them great for live battlefield training and with this new combat stuff your troops can never not get trained enough....
with the exception of the Danger Room.
But i consider that an exploit

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Next, project... Project Flamer marine.
Overwhelming success, My goal of making humans into elf-slaying space marines is starting to look promising.
Of course, For purposes of science I tested them against dwarves armed with Iron.
Melee weapons are necessary.
However it usually takes a single burst of fire to eliminate the elves.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Don't forget the caste of Techmarines with the absurdly-powerful third arm (twice the size of a normal arm, made of metal, can grasp), as well as the powerfist.
And the chainsword, of course. They're iconic. I'm not sure if anything personifies Space Marines better (short of the Jump Pack, but modding flying Marines seems a tad useless (unless you can fly in Fortress now, in which case DO IT, BOY!)).
... If I knew how the hell to work castes, I'd make the Techmarines meself...
