Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
My hunter named his crossbow. He'd racked up like 20 kills but the most notable would maybe be two elephants he hunted. He was pretty attached to that crossbow...
And when my first goblin attack came he managed to kill 4 outof 7 goblins before they got a lucky shot in his leg and swarmed him, then the other goblins got killed by the pack of dogs the hunter kept with him (he had like 7 dogs that followed him all the time.) He got his own tomb, with caskets for his dogs and several statues and ornaments. The room was then sealed off by several doors, and the path to the tomb (it was dug out away from the main hall) was collapsed (which took forever!) so if anyone wanted to loot his tomb they'd have to dig to it!

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
hunters tend to be pretty amazing after they've hunted for awhile. I recall having a small group of hunters (5-7) take on much larger clusters of goblins later on just because they're (almost) constantly training their skills. Plus they usually give a steady supply of meat, at least until you hunt everything.

I tend to alternate my hunters with time consuming extra jobs. Like hauling. That way they don't extinct things. Usually only about half my eight hunters are working at a time.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I never use hunters...even with three fields I haven't expanded since the fort started, I recently had to double the size of my food stockpile. It's full again. This is a typical situation for me, probably because my usual reaction to "useless migrant" is "turn on farming (fields)."
So hunting just seems wasteful to me.

I usually make useless migrants fish. It's nice and relaxing and can get them killed.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
After 3 years of in game time, my dwarves have finally hit magma 50z levels below the surface in a layer of marble. Which is incidentally the first flux stone I hit.
After constructing a 20z waterfall and mastering the art of water wheels I am considering creating a pump stack to get the magma to near my work/sleep area (on levels 5-7 below the surface).
Theproblemfun is two caverns are in the way.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Is there any way to find volcanoes? I'm having a hard time making steel and for my next fort I want a good source of magma. Or is there a way to create them using worldgen?

They're a red ^ in the middle map in world gen. You can look for them, I guess.

I've found a Taiga I want to embark on, but for some reason when I try to do so the game hangs. Don't know what it is, since it loads other environments just fine.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Sadly, the only way to find volcanoes is by hand, which is a pain in the ass. Your average default world will have, like, 0-2 of them, I think.
You can crank volcanism up in the advanced parameters, though. I think through increasing the x-and-y-variance. Don't quote me on that.Last edited by Incomp; 2011-05-31 at 06:56 AM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Change the seed to random and this will give you lots of volcanoes. You may need to regen a few times to get an ideal volcano like one with things like rivers, savage biome, tropical biome (elephants), evil/good biome, sand, flux, or clay,

Wow, speaking of starting locations, I started up a game and think I chose the worst one possible. Evil, Savage, no water, no plants, the ground is a bunch of useless dirt. I expect to last 2 days before getting killed by some kind of skeletal wolf, or something.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
So is anyone else looking forward to infecting a sqad of dwarven axemen with Xthropy?
Then giving them their own martial mini fort with a massive iron gate.
Imagine the stories, "The goblins massacred my poorly armed militia that were left after that forgotten beast attack, but luckily my were-elephant squad was still alive since I couldn't risk them enterin the fortress so close to the full moon. So I sealed the main entry way and waited, and just before the full moon I released them, they turned in the midst of the goblins and they all died, after the full moon passed I ordered them inside. Plenty of goblinite for all."

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
So I recently started playing this after a long break, I stopped a while ago because the military was annoying and confusing me, but anyway ....
When digging down a short ways, I breached the cavern level.
I sealed it up again straight away, but it seems to have not been as good a seal as it looks, as a forgotten beast got into my fortress.
Sooo, said forgotten beast is now dead (20 untrained and unequipped dwarfs managed to kill it and not take any casualties, which I was quite surprised at) but I'd like to prevent any more getting through.
Below is a plan of the breach. Can anyone see where it got through? or are things made of steam able to get through where they shouldn't?
Level 123
00X00
0XXX0
0-X-0
0---0
level 122
00000
0CU00
_0000
_____
level 121
00___
_____
_____
_____
0 = natural wall, X = up/down staircase, - = ground, _ = open (no floor), U = upward staircase,
C = constructed wall (this was an up/down staircase, and is the point that breached the cavern, so it's where I think there must be a gap, but I can't see how)
Thanks.Last edited by Mael; 2011-05-31 at 04:08 PM. Reason: floor plan impossible to read

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
If you have an updown staircase and an open space below and to the side, flying creatures can still enter. You should replace the updown stair with a constructed floor to seal it. I just learned that recently myself.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
The volcano map works pretty well. Now to design a way to make the volcano explode on command, incinerating everything outside!
But it dislikes oceans for some reason.
EDIT: How exactly does lava work anyway? How do I get the stuff where I want it when the top of the volcanois much higher than where I'm going to build everything?Last edited by Caewil; 2011-05-31 at 11:45 PM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
If the magma is somehow above where you want it, channels and such work great. If you need to raise it however, the most commonly used method is a pump stack. Although, there is a thread on the bay12games forum about how to raise magma multiple levels instantly by dropping a huge undug stone plug into it...

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
So pressure doesn't exist. It won't rise above the level where the channel opening was dug into the magma?
EDIT: Tested it and it works. I now have a magma moat. Awesome!Last edited by Caewil; 2011-06-01 at 02:17 AM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Magma doesn't pressurize on its own if fed from a z-level higher than where it's flowing to, but it's important to note that water will.
Water DOESN'T pressure on its own under certain circumstances, though- if you pump water into the bottom of a deep pit from the side, it'll only fill up to the same level the pump is on, regardless of whether or not the pump is still going or not.Last edited by Shpadoinkle; 2011-06-01 at 02:22 AM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Note, that while pumping water up a stack works acceptably with a design of
Code:o>OF
>=Pump Intake
O=Pump Output
F=Floor/Constructed Floor
Mamga should be pumped as so:
Code:ooo>OFFF

I have a named shield now. A salt-based FB attacked. My first militia dwarf on the scene bashed it with his shield and 1 shot it. Funny thing is, that was the 2nd kill on the shield. A goblin was killed by it 7 years prior.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
You can assign the dog to a built cage/chain and then release him. You can build the cage he is in and then hook it up to a lever. Pull the lever and the cage deconstructs releasing whats inside. You can also assign the dog to a pen or pit. That's pretty much every way to remove a creature from a cage sitting in your stockpile.

Ah, thanks. Also, I feel slightly sad that a forgotten beast inflicted less damage than a single troglodyte.
Well, it also killed two guinea-hens, but that doesn't count.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
They make great training. Do a mass dumping on them (d-b-d) and a mass claim (d-b-c) and you can dump all the gear off them into a garbage zone. Then just build the cages and attach a lever to each one. Pull the lever and let your milita go to town.
You could also dwarven-atom-smash the cages, but you loose the cage.If God had wanted you to live he would not have created me!
