Ah... n-no... no. I don't th-think so. She said, haltingly, as if the idea had just now occurred to her that Maria was to blame for her recent "problems". No... s-she couldn't possibly. C-could she? It feels so.... real... I close my eyes, and.... I can remember. N-not all of it, but.... some. It hurt so much... I pretended. I pretended it didn't happen. I pretended... that I w-wasn't... me. I p-pretended that... t-things... were there.... so that I could not think... Always distracted... and afraid. B-but she... I... it, is angry at me. I... I... I... I don't know what to do.

Her tone grew more and more pleading, but despite it all, she managed without panic or hysterics... or even crying. Instead hers was more the desperate, pleading speech of someone who feared they were alone, and was reaching out for anyone to help them.

N-no one believes me about... Maria. I am either weeping and pathetic... or feared. No one wants to be around me anymore. T-they're afraid. You... y-you're afraid. And I am afraid th-that I am going to hurt someone.

Despite her fragile form and shaky voice, her intent grew firm.

If I ever... I I ever become... her. If I ever go back to that... please... will you... kill me? I-ith will not... even if I ask. I d-do not want to hurt anyone. But she does. Oh, how she does... and s-she is stronger... than me.

Pieter felt his fists tighten. So, the Hounds had stooped to beating an old man for speaking ill of Halbermann? Probably five or six against one, too. All dogs, no matter how vicious, were ultimately cowards.

"Sam. Honesty is well and good, but survival comes first. You must be aware by now that the world isn't fair. I'm not telling you to become a bad person, only to do what you must. You'll understand soon enough that you can't beg all your life. Listen, I come here every day. I'll bring you some food once in a while. If you need me to teach you a few things, just ask. Winter is going to be harsher than any beating, and you want to be prepared for it."

    He rose.

"So, about old Creutzfeld... How badly is he hurt?"

Lothar stared at Illiiya as she rambled her confession, his beer slowly growing stale as his expression clouded. He scratched absently at the rashes under his clothes, but his eyes never left the almond-shaped ones opposite.

After the elven woman had finished, he paused and watched for a second. Then, looking serious, he offered her a hand. "Well. I'm not- I don' think I fully un'erstand what you're saying. I don't- it's all a bit... 'priestly' for me. Sounds like there's a big part o' you what's still all stuck in- well, whatever you used t'be."

He paused and glanced at the table, then back up. "Thing is, y'aren't that anymore. You're one o' us now, whatever that means." He smiled ruefully, scratching at his leg. "I mean, Raffy's a kid, and I'm a deserter, so it's not the best crew, but it's there. We'll defend you. Prob'ly more than Raffy defends Maria, too."

He leaned back in his chair and blew out his cheeks. "I dunno about that last thing. I don't like killin', not- not people. Mutants and goblins, sure, that's different, but you're a person. Still. If you go all crazy and start. Witching out on us. Well. Maybe you'll not be you anymore, Illiiya, an' if that's true, then I'll avenge your loss." He nodded firmly, taking up the mug of beer again.

"Just like I would any've us."

Pushing the door sharply open, Raffy swung through with his blunderbuss to the fore.

He found himself alone in what could only be Maria's bedchamber - a large four-poster dominated the centre of the room. I just published my first novella, Lúnasa Days, a modern fantasy with a subtle, uncertain magic.

You can grab it on Kindle or paperback.

    Raffy

    Spoiler
    Show
Rushing to the window, Raffy saw a dark shape descending the rope – as the barrel of the blunderbuss swung down, the figure let go its grip, dropping cat-like the last few feet to the street and leaping out of the path of the ‘buss’s roaring cone of shrapnel. There was something about him that looked familiar – his hat. Ithelus’ hat.

From below, the sounds of the others’ movements became louder, Maria and the servants rushing up the stairs: the lady was the first to the door, stopping in the doorway as she looked wildly around at her room.

OOC: No need to use the fortune point: blunderbuss auto-hits anything in its field of fire, and they then take an Ag test to evade.

    [hr]

    Ithelus

    Spoiler
    Show
Giving the rope a hefty tug to make sure it would hold, Ithelus heard footsteps on the stairs – hurrying to the window as silently as he could, he cast the rope out into the rain, taking a firm grip and beginning to descend the front of the house as quickly as he dared.

As he neared the bottom of the rope, he heard the door of the bedroom open through the window up above. There was a sound of rushing feet from up above, and a figure appeared in the window: Ithelus’ eyes widened as he saw the flared bell of a blunderbuss pointed down at him.

“BURGLAR!” roared a voice – Raffy’s voice. Letting go of the rope, Ithelus dropped the last few feet to the ground, throwing himself out of the path of the hail of shot as the blunderbuss’ bellow split the night...

OOC: Had to go back over your previous post a little – hope you don’t mind. Also, in order to save on one back-and-forth, I rolled evasion for the ‘buss for you, and had to use a fortune point to avoid you getting hit – I assume that’s what you would have done, if not, please correct me.

    Pieter

    Spoiler
    Show
The common hall of the Graf’s Arms was reasonably quiet at this hour – a few huddled groups of men and women sat around, talking in low voices. Walking past them, Pieter caught snatches of their conversation.

“...they’re sayin’ it’s rats, rats in the walls...”
“...I heard that Sparrowhawk boy fought a brace of them, just the other day. It’s a miracle he’s still breathin’...”
“...what about the Sergeant’s bastard boy, eh? That’s a new one...”

There was no card game in session – but that didn’t mean one couldn’t be started...

    Raffy the Sparroohook

    Spoiler
    Show

Seeing just one person - and feeling aw sense of anger at the sight of Ithelus' cap - Raffy wheels on one heel and pounds toward the stairs.

Seeing Maria and the servants hurrying into the room he breathes, "Maria, close the window," and then barks, "Hans, you're with me!"

He runs down the stairs to the front door. Shoving his bluss into its "holster" he draws his sword. As soon as he reaches it he will throw open the door and head outside after Ithelus.

    Show
'That Sparrowhawk boy'? thought Pieter, rolling his eyes. He knew it was petty, but Rafale's dubious fame annoyed him. The arrogant young thug did not need even more excuses to keep acting like his warped idea of a 'hero'.

Pieter's ears suddenly caught something interesting.

    Sergeant's bastard boy?

Tense with curiosity, the initiate edged closer, sat at an empty table and pretended to practice his card tricks while eavesdropping on the other conversation.

    Ithelus
    Spoiler
    Show
Ithelus rolls on his shoulder and come up in a crouch. Raffy! bloody Raffy! but before he could think more his instincts took over and he began running, hoping that the rest of the group had heard the gunshot and legged it as well.

Taking major streets at random Ithelus tries to find a suitable place to hide.

OOC: No worries, correct assumption. Feel free to take any more rolls for me that you feel are needed.

    Ithelus

    Spoiler
    Show
Running as fast as his feet could carry him, Ithelus darted down a side-street between the grand houses – behind him, he heard the front door of Samtzunge House slam open, Raffy’s voice shouting “BURGLAR!” once more. Ithelus was already out of sight, however, racing away into the crooked shadows as feet pounded down Manor Street. The boy wouldn’t shut up – he could hear the Sparrowhawk’s shouts receding behind him, doing his level best to raise the alarm.

Coming around the corner of the alleyway he was on, Ithelus looked around, trying to decide which way to go next – he looked round as he heard running feet approaching, then relaxed as he recognised Feinmesser and his accomplices.

“What the hell happened?” hissed the thief, catching up with Ithelus. “Don’t just stand there! Move! This way!”

Looking back over their shoulders, the other criminals sprinted ahead into the shadows, darting down an alleyway that Ithelus had thought was a dead-end. Behind them, the clamour of Raffy’s alarm was not dying away…

    [hr]

    Raffy

    Spoiler
    Show
Seizing up Hans in his wake, Raffy charged down the stairs and out of the door – stumbling out into the street, he looked rapidly left and right, trying to catch sight of the elf. The rope was still dangling from Maria’s window, frayed and mangled by the blunderbuss’ blast – of Ithelus, there was no sign, his quarry having disappeared into the shadows of the side-streets.

“BURGLAR!” he yelled again, at the top of his voice – already, he could hear running feet approaching, a watchman’s lantern bobbing towards them down the street…

OOC: Not sure whether I should be autopiloting from here on or tomorrow; if it’s the former, I’ll follow your instructions and post more instalments as time passes.

”Yeah, heard it up the way o’ the Fields,” said a scrawny, bearded man, crouched over his drink. “Some young villain was stirrin’ up trouble, and they’re sayin’ ‘e looked just like old Halbermann. Man ain’t got no wife, so it must be a bastard. Stands to reason.”

He took a gulp from his drink.

“’s not like you’d expect a man like that to be chaste, now, is it?”

A general mutter of agreement ran round the table.

Sigmar’s Hounds,” murmured one of them, contemptuously. “Ain’t one properly god-fearin’ man among them.”

    Raffy the Eflslayer Sparrowhawk

    Spoiler
    Show

Raffy runs on in the direction he last saw the figure head, making sure to glance into doorways and down side-alleys as he goes. He motions for the watchman to try the next street over, figuring one of them will be on the trail.

(Not sure how many streets are in this neighbourhood but I can send Hans down a third one if it helps increase our odds. Otherwise he's with me. All he's gotta do is yell if he sees the burglar.)

    Raffy

    Spoiler
    Show
Running up to the first side-street to the right of the house, Raffy stared down it - the descending mist of rain was cutting down the visibility considerably, but as far as he could tell, there was no-one there.

That was, until a couple of seconds had passed - at which point, the silhouettes of three shadowy figures darted furtively across the far end of the alleyway, heading around another bend and out of sight at a run.
