Re: Bibliography II
Yes, and the quality was crap.
Right now I'm trying to focus less on characters and more on backgrounds, but it's really hard. I've had a long time to develop my characters, but I really have to force myself to draw backgrounds. I pretty much know the basics of anatomy by now, but architecture is right out.
I have to use photo reference. I feel like a cheat.

Re: Bibliography II
It's still quite a neat downtown, what with flower pots in front of the houses. I mean, it could look like this.

Re: Bibliography II
The second version is great!
And don't feel like a cheat In all kinds of art, you need to observe before you can create yourself. It's the same with music, literature, dancing etc. If you don't study about how others do it, and how it exists in reality, you won't get anywhere.
It is natural to want something individual, new. But new things often bend and change the rules. But can you change the rules if you don't know them?
And I have to agree with Gez: it doesn't look as dangerous as Ben describes it. Although who knows what's hidden behind this flowery facade of calmnessLast edited by Hyoumu Yau; 2010-08-31 at 02:58 PM.

Re: Bibliography II
You should not feel like a cheat unless you directly
tracedcopy/paste/cropped it from another drawing. Picture references are not even CLOSE to cheating.Last edited by HalfTangible; 2010-08-31 at 04:22 PM.

Re: Bibliography II
Plenty of artists use photo references.
I know that Fate/stay night's backgrounds are traced from real locations (which was at least a step up from Tsukihime's "Google Image Search. Blur Filter. Done." approach).
For Negima, Ken Akamatsu copies real-life architecture for some things and uses 3D models as reference for others (he accurately depicts Welsh trains).
And I don't have insight into the workings of many professional artists, so I assume these aren't the only two places it's been done.

I'll join the "Photo reference is not cheating" corus. Really. It's one of the best tools for improving one's skills.

This page specifically. Apparently Opal should also have precognition powers.

Re: Bibliography II
Oh my god there is!! But I'm assuming that that was there when the page was first made, in which case, Opal only existed in the RP and the character contest didn't even exist. But it would be pretty awesome if Elagune went back and put that in after I submitted Opal.

Re: Bibliography II
it was noticeable, but that's because it's much easier to focus on buildings and their perspective lines than other minor flaws. the second version of downtown looks more cleanly drawn.
i, too, will join the chorus of encouragement for using photo reference. i admire that you try not to use it, but every budding artist has to draw (no pun intended) on the experience of others while they're learning. that happened to take the form of some [probably] unknown photographer.
on a related note, did you know that Picasso could paint incredibly realistic pieces? he didn't move on to the crazy stuff we know and love until he'd mastered realism.

Re: Bibliography II
Nah, they were there before. But there is a chance that he went back in time and changed it.
Also, yeah, Photo Reference = Good. Even professional artists need them. Hell, a comic artist advised getting photo reference if you cannot actually go and get real life references.

Maybe it's because he didn't pay his late fee at the library and he's afraid of Ninja Librarians?
