Wouldn't it make more sense to attack with fire? For one, it gives you advantage, and two, you can counter anybody who attacks you from the darkness. (Ex, archers, etc.) I don't think shamans would be a problem yet, so that's another bonus. There are a lot more lance users than dark magic users, especially when they're trainees.
