Default The Omnomnomicon (3.5 Food System)

    Food Rules:

    NEW Skill: Cooking (Wis)
With a Successful Cooking check, a cook may prepare special dishes with extraordinary or even supernatural effects.

A dish is a single-use consumable item that must be prepared by a character with ranks in Cooking. A cook can prepare any dish he has the necessary ranks in Cooking to create by making a special Cooking check that takes one hour. To create a dish, a cook must be able to move and have access to the appropriate ingredients. He must be able to concentrate during this time.

Often, a dish will have special effects if the cook beats the cooking DC by a certain number. If a cook fails to make the DC of the dish by 5 or less, the dish simply has no effect. If the cook fails a cooking check by more than 5, the creature eats the dish must make a fortitude save (DC 15) or be sickened for 24 hours. If the cook fails the check by more than 10, the creature that eats the dish must make a fortitude save (DC 20) or nauseated of one minute, then sickened for 24 hours. In addition, each round of combat they must make a fortitude save (DC 15) or be nauseated for one round.

Preparing the body of a monster into food requires expedience to preserve the beast's life force, which allows the cook to create the additional effects of his dishes. If an ingredient creature has been dead for one hour, the DC to prepare the dish is increased by 5, plus an additional 5 for every hour after the first.

If properly prepared, a dish's effects last for one hour normally. Higher level cooks can prepare longer-lasting dishes that last an additional hour for every ten ranks in cooking they have. Most cooks also have abilities that make dishes they eat last longer.

Eschewing some of your connection with the wild spirit of the world, you instead reap divine benefits from hunting and feasting on monsters.
    Level: Ranger 1st
Replaces: If you select this class feature you do not gain Wild Empathy and never gain divine spells or spell slots.
Benefit: You gain Cooking as a class skill. In addition, you gain the Savor feature at 1st level. This feature allows you to double the duration of dishes you prepare and consume yourself. Additionally, you add the bonus you would normally get from your Favored Enemy feature to your Cooking skill when preparing dishes obtained from cuts of your Favored Enemies.

    Ingredient Creatures: Aboleth

The aboleth brain is a complicated feast of five parts. The frontal lobe, studded with thousands of hornlike protrusions. The primary lobe, a complex net of tangled tendrils. The ventral lobe, four fingerlike extensions from the bottom of the brain. The dorsal lobe, covered with fine tendrils that twitch even in death. The rear lobe, six tendril-like branches from the dorsal lobe.

The Aboleth Brain grants the eater a +10 bonus to all knowledge checks as you tap into the racial memory of the aboleth. In addition, the eater gains a fraction of the aboleth’s psionic power. He gains the following psionic abilities: 2/Day: Dominate Person, Mirage Arcana, Persistant Image, Veil.

    Minimum Ranks: 6
    Cut: Brisket/Rump
    Servings: 1
    Cook DC: DC 20
    Augment: Yes
    Ingredient Creatures: Ankeg

This dish consists of the stomach of an Ankeg, emptied out and then stuffed with a number of it‘s other organs, finely minced and mixed with root vegetables and a number of spices. Despite how unappetizing it sounds, it has a delicious savory flavor, though some complain of heartburn afterwards.

The Ankeg Stomach gives the eater the ability to spit acid as a ranged touch attack and deal acid damage with a bite attack. If the eater possesses a bite attack, any time the eater hits with this attack, it deals an additional 1d4 points of acid damage. As a standard action he can also hock up a mouthful of acid and spit it in a searing glob a single opponent within 30 feet. If the attack hits, the target takes 2d4 damage, plus an addition 1d4 acid damage each round thereafter for three rounds. After using the acid spit attack, the eater cannot use it again for one minute, and during this time he does not deal acid damage with a successful bite.

    Augment:
For every 5 points the cook beats the DC by, the spit damage is increased by 1d4, and for every 10 points, the lingering damage after the spit and the damage dealt with each bite increases by 1d4.

Ape Strips grant the eater the eater the ability to climb with monkey-like ease. The eater gains a climb speed of 20 feet. He gains a +8 racial bonus on climb checks and can always choose to take 10 on a climb check, even if rushed or threatened.

The eater of assassin wine gains blindsense out to 30 feet, using a combination of sound, scent, and vibrational cues. If the eater chooses to close his eyes and rely entirely on the blindsense, either because he cannot use his eyes or because he chooses not to, his blindsense instead becomes blindsight.

The eater of the Athach strips gains a third arm, protruding from the center of their chest. This arm is identical to the eater’s other arms. If the wielder has the two-weapon fighting feat, he is treated as having the multiweapon fighting feat as well.

Ingredient Creatures: Monstrous Spider, Phase Spider

This dish consists of the severed spinneret of a giant spider, drizzled with sticky, sugary syrup and baked thoroughly. The dish is surprisingly sweet and sticky, beneath a warm, crunchy shell. Some don‘t enjoy it, however, due to the tendency for the now-liquefied core of the spinnerets to stick to the eater‘s lips.

Baked Spinnerets give the eater the ability to spin webs. The eater can spin up to 50 feet of silken webbing per day. This webbing functions as silk rope, but the eater gains a +5 bonus to all use rope checks made using his webbing, and the DC of all checks made to escape from or break this webbing are increased by 4.

This dish is composed of the eyes and optic nerves of a basalisk. It‘s not particularly filling, and requires a strong stomach to pop an intact eye into one‘s mouth. If you or your guests really have a problem with seeing the eyes themselves, you can bread them.

The eater of the Basalisk eyes can take a swift action each round to fix a single opponent within 30 feet with a petrifying gaze. The opponent must make a fortitude save (DC 10+½ Chef level+Wis) or be turned to stone, as with the stone to flesh spell. The eater of the Bitter Venom shake Gains a bite attack that deals 1d4 damage plus the characters strength modifier. Ingredient Creatures: Delver

This dish is a truly massive steak cut from a delver. The meat is tough and chewey, and it has an unpleasantly sour flavor to it. The delver‘s acidic slime must be washed off and the steak must be soaked in vinegar before it can finally be grilled. It is generally considered to be more work that It’s worth, but some connoisseurs have a taste for the unique flavor.

The eater of this dish produces an acidic slime from their skin, specifically from their hands. If the eater hits an opponent with a slam, claw, or melee touch attack, he deposits a patch of the mucous-like sticky slime. This slime deals damage when initially applied, then additional damage each round after that for two rounds. To organic creatures or wooden objects, this acidic slime deals 1d6 damage. To metallic creatures or objects, this slime deals 2d8 damage. To stony creatures, objects, or structures, this slime deals 4d10 damage. The slime can be washed off with a pint of water or a weak acid, like vinegar. The victim’s armor and clothing dissolve immediately unless he succeeds on a reflex save (DC 10+eater’s con +½ eater’s HD). Similarly, a creature attacking the eater with natural weapons must make a reflex save of the same DC or take damage from the eater’s slime.

The lung-meat is stringy and tough, but the spices and the long roasting help to make it soft enough to be palatable. It‘s got a surprisingly deep flavor, which the spices really help to bring out. The odd part is once the lungs are fully cooked, the web of veins crisscrossing the center of the lung tighten and stiffen, forming a web within the lung.

The eater of this dish gains a sonic scream attack that can be used as a standard action. This attack forms a cone 60 feet long, and all creatures within it are entitled to a reflex save (DC 10+Eater‘s Con +½ eater‘s HD) for half damage. The eater chooses flesh, nerves or material when using this attack. Choosing flesh, the attack deals 2d6 sonic damage to all creatures within the cone. If the eater chooses nerves, this attack deals 4d6 nonlethal damage to all living creatures within the cone. If the eater chooses material, he may choose glass, metal, stone, or wood, and this attack deals 2d6 sonic damage to all objects made of that material within. the cone.

    Augment:
For every 5 points you beat the DC by, the sonic damage dealt by the flesh and material attacks increases by 1d6 and the damage dealt by the nerves attack increases by 2d6.

This dish consists of the stomach of a digester, emptied out and then stuffed with a number of it‘s other organs, finely minced and mixed with root vegetables and a number of spices. Despite how unappetizing it sounds, it has a delicious savory flavor, though some complain of heartburn afterwards.

The eater gains the ability to spew acid from their mouth as a standard action, dealing 4d8 acid damage to all creatures in a 30-foot cone. After using this ability, the eater must wait 1d4 rounds before he can use it again.

Dragon lung is a common luxury dish, very popular among the aristocrats, often viewed as a status symbol. Dragon lung recipies vary, but the most commonly prepared method is to poach the lung, before pouring wine into it and frying it with fresh vegetables and a light sauce. Dragon lung is rich and flavorful, the exact flavor varying slightly by the variety of dragon used. Red, gold, and brass lungs have a somewhat spicy flavor to them. Black, green, and copper lungs have a bit of a citrus hint to them. Blue and bronze lungs have a somewhat metallic flavor. White and silver lungs are almost sweet. The older the dragon used, the more rich and complex the taste, and the more noticeable the subtleties.

The eater of this dish can breathe out a breath weapon as a standard action. This takes the form of a 30-foot cone or a 60-foot line (chosen by the eater with each breath) that deals 2d6 fire, cold, electricity, or acid damage (See Table) with a reflex save (DC 10+eater’s Con +½ eater’s HD) for half damage. This dish is made of a dragon‘s eyes. The eyes are usually boiled, and often breaded for the weak of stomach. Some of the larger dragon eyes can be served sliced up into breaded rings and dipped in the fluid of the eye. The eyes are actually rather bland, but creative use of spices in the breading can help bring flavor to it.

The eater of the drake eye gains blindsense out to 20 feet.

This dish is relatively simple to prepare, though it requires a steady hand to do so. Basically, the cook cuts three foot-long strips from the back of a pixie, one on either side of the wings and one between them, taking a half-inch of meat with them. The strips are then fried and rolled, with the skin out, into a trio of small, spiral rolls, then held together with short wooden skewers and served. The dish is generally only favored by the evil, though it‘s power can sometimes lure others.

The eater of the fade wrap can spend a swift action to turn himself and his possessions invisible, as with the invisibility spell. The effect can last indefinitely, though attacking or casting a spell still dispels the invisibility, at least until he spends another swift action to go invisible once more.

This dish is made from the feeler of a rust monster. The preparation method is quite interesting. The feeler is first laid out and sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon. Then, the feeler is held over heat. The feeler curls inward as it is exposed to heat, forming a tight, spiraled ball. Overall, eating the dish is the most usual part of the meal, as the coiled feeler makes it difficult to properly bite into. It is not particularly filling, and it has a slightly coppery aftertaste, but it‘s rather sweet.

The eater of this dish can instantly rust any metallic object he touches. By making a melee touch attack, unarmed strike, or claw attack against a metallic object or creature, the target is affected as though targeted by a rusting grasp spell, although magic items may be affected by it as well. How will you get any gaming done when everyone at the table is going to be making trips to the fridge because all the talk of food makes them hungry?

If you dont think there's truth to that issue, I'm now hungry after reading this thread. Thanks a lot.

No rules for preserving food yet? Salting and curing are important parts of the cooking process when you have low amounts of technology.

Also, the DC increase for old meat is way way too high. Leaving meat out for an hour, regardless of temperature, should not automatically be the difference between food poisoning and a passable meal.

The first item I've found that serves that purpose perfectly is Angriz's Chest, 1000 GP from RoD. I'm intending to make larger, extra dimensional versions. But I could include a salting/canning kit.

Also, this is medieval times, so there's flies and disease rampant. It'a partially intended as a DM control method.

How long does the effect of the "buff" from the food last on another person? So, if one were to eat the Aboleth Fin with Mucous Sauce that was created by a cook that beat the DC by more than the number required, how long would the consumer have a Swim Speed, or be able to breathe water? It is not mentioned at all.

    Otherwise, this is very interesting.

24 hours is kind of long. No, actually, it is just really long. Especially considering that non-cooks don't even have to specialize to gain the benefit. One cohort gains them the same buff as a character devoted entirely to cooking. That just doesn't seem right. Maybe make the duration based on the skill ranks? Maybe 1 hour per 10 ranks, with 1 hour at 1 rank, 2 at ten ranks, 3 at twenty ranks.

That or you could give the bonuses from the food itself based on the ranks, but that might be harder to do, and would have to be done individually most likely.

Or both, I suppose. But 24 hours is certainly not a good idea with fixed bonuses.

[Edit]: On the note that the below poster has taken, maybe if they fail the check by more than 10, the creature must make a fortitude save or be nauseated?

10 minutes? Between setting up, sterilizing, and preparing the ingredients to be cooked (chopping vegetables/fabricating protein/etc), 10 minutes might work if you were sauteing a 1/2 lb slice of Beholder tentacle. You're looking at quite a substantially longer time if you plan on making a sauce, or a stock/broth/bouillon/consomme, or if you plan on braising/stewing, broiling, grilling, or frying it or if you're serving it with a starch or vegetable dish on the side (not to mention factoring in how many people you're cooking for, since adventuring parties tend to be 4+).

Especially keep in mind things with natural armor, like Dragons, who would probably need to be braised for days before a piece of them would be edible.

Also, a few of your recipe choices are kind of strange. Nymph stew? Nymphs seem to lack both fat and muscle for the most part - if you stewed one, you'd lose whatever meager flavor they probably had in the first place. You'd be better off marinating it for a little while and doing a quick grill or sauteing it in butter with onions&garlic and maybe some other vegetables (carrots? something with a firmer consistency).

If the cook fails a cooking check by more than 5, the creature eats the dish is sickened for 24 hours.
Probably needs a Fortitude save. I'd suggest a static 15 or so.

Maybe it should be 10 minutes per pound of food prepared or something like that. Obviously, that's a gross estimate of how long it takes to prepare a dish.

Okay, the main limiter would be that you can only make one dish of a dragon's wings for each dragon killed. Then, factor in the number of inedible monster types, including humanoids, monstrous humanoids, giants, undead, outsiders, and constructs. So, combine those and each day will likely only yield a few dishes, some days not producing any at all. The cook is obviously going to want them himself, as well. So, while there would be a possibility of having ONE dish a day, It's rather unlikely that you'll consistently manage to get something like flight.

However, I do understand your point. Perhaps one hour as a base, and cooks get to persist them longer as a class feature.

Well, 10 minutes seemed like a pretty basic time unit. Better than an hour, but long enough it didn't feel like you were just handwaving it off. I could include longer cook times for higher-level dishes. 10 minutes would be for the basic, lower-level dishes. I would say you'd be able to cook more than one dish at a time, but more than 2-3 dishes would start making you take circumstance penalties.

Also, the natural armor usually indicates scales or hide. Lobsters have pretty high NA, but they're quite tender inside once you crack the shell. Steak doesn't have the same consistency as leather. So, I don't think that dragon would take any longer to cook than any other dish.

I'm perfectly willing to admit that I'm not the most creative in terms of dish types. what would you recommend making out of nymphs?

As for the fort save, I could see that. Referring to the post above, I was thinking of nauseated as well, but that seemed like it would be too rough to make them sick for 24 hours. I could see like a percentage chance to be nauseated for 1 round while in combat or something.

Alright, this here is a prototype for the design of all dishes:

    Spoiler
    Show

    Sizzling Wings
    Dish Level: 3
    Cut: Shoulder
    Cook Time: 10 minutes
    Servings: 2
    Cook DC: 20
    Augment: Yes
Ingredient Creatures: Chimera, Dragonne, Dragon (True), Half-Dragon (Large or larger), Manticore, Spider Eater, Wyvern, Yrthak

The shoulder and wing of a draconic being, this dish is served with hot spices inspired by flavors drawn from draconic fundementia. The eater gains a large pair of draconic wings.

At it's basic level, this dish provides those who eat it with a +10 bonus to jump checks and the ability to glide, allowing them to negate damage from a fall of any height, and allowing 20 feet of forward travel for every 5 feet of descent. The eater glides at a speed of 30 feet with (average) maneuverability.

    Augment:
If you beat the cooking DC by five, the eater can fly at a speed of 30 feet for a number of consecutive rounds equal to their constitution score. The eater can still glide between rounds of full flight. The eater cannot fly for a number of rounds equal to the rounds spent flying before he may fly again.
If you beat the cooking DC by ten, the eater can fly without tiring.

    Breakdown:
Dish level: Minimum level of the cook making it.
Cut: Determines the part of the beast being harvested. Similar to magic item slots, prevents making two dishes out of one part of a creature.
    Cook time: Self-explanatory.
Servings: How many of this dish can be made with one cooking check.
    Cook DC: Basic DC
Augment: Has additional effects if you beat the DC by X
Ingredient Creatures: Creatures this meal can be cooked off of.

OK, I can see that argument. But what about characters that manage to gain parts for cooking by buying them, instead of taking them off of fallen enemies? Just a thought.

Also, I like the format, but instead of minimum level, you might want to have it be minimum ranks in the cooking skill.

I think the way I would do it is start off with something like an hour for 1 dish if you only have a few points in the Cooking skill. Then, as you get more ranks in Cooking, you can do more dishes at one time during that hour. And then I'd have the Base Class reduce the time itself.

Keep in mind that past level 6, you've basically escaped what is physically possible in the real world, so being able to cook something that should take an hour, in 5 minutes, using your hot-blooded manliness to sear it perfectly all the way through with the burning passion of your manly heart is acceptable past that point.

I also like the idea of a Craftsman Needs No Tools sort of effect, where you can instantly shape your love of cooking into masterwork pots, pans, beef stock, etc.

Also, the natural armor usually indicates scales or hide. Lobsters have pretty high NA, but they're quite tender inside once you crack the shell. Steak doesn't have the same consistency as leather. So, I don't think that dragon would take any longer to cook than any other dish.
You're right about the natural armor. Still, cooking a whole Prime Rib from a cow can take 3-4 hours. Scale that up to Dragon-levels of muscle and toughness. Although, the point seems moot, as you don't have any recipes involving the main body of the dragon. The eyes, scales, tail, wings, and [I'm guessing the organ that generates their elemental energy?] wouldn't take any extra time, I think. Still, where does all the meat go?

I'm perfectly willing to admit that I'm not the most creative in terms of dish types. what would you recommend making out of nymphs?
Well, I'd recommend not killing and eating a sentient being. But if I were already personal chef to Asmodeus or something, I'd do Poached Nymph (In a white Elven wine).

Also, I didn't mention it earlier, but this thread has one of the best titles I've ever seen.

Awesome idea. Awesome thread title. I eagerly await further developments.

And because I'm picky, I just have to point out that the correct spelling is "anthropophage". (The root word is "anthropos", not just "anthros". And you probably don't want to be eating anything with "anthra-" as the root... could mean charcoal, coal, carbuncles, or just anthrax. )

True enough, I could see exotic butchers in D&D running shops, or monstermeat restaurants. I'm going to have to include prices for dishes and ingredients...

Ranks is a pretty good idea, I was going for something akin to spell levels.

Hmm, that could work. Do you have some recommendations for benchmarks?

Keep in mind that past level 6, you've basically escaped what is physically possible in the real world, so being able to cook something that should take an hour, in 5 minutes, using your hot-blooded manliness to sear it perfectly all the way through with the burning passion of your manly heart is acceptable past that point.

MINE IS THE FORK THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS!

I also like the idea of a Craftsman Needs No Tools sort of effect, where you can instantly shape your love of cooking into masterwork pots, pans, beef stock, etc.

I was kinda really enjoying the idea of portable kitchens. At low levels, you could work over campfires. At mid-level you could have a full kitchen in a wagon. At higher ones, you'd have a cube that would unfold into a 10x10 kitchen, or even a gate into an extraplanar five-star restaurant.

You're right about the natural armor. Still, cooking a whole Prime Rib from a cow can take 3-4 hours. Scale that up to Dragon-levels of muscle and toughness. Well, now that I've gone with cuts, I think I'll prolly come up with some new dishes to fill in the cuts. But yeah, that's the breath weapon organ. It's from draconomicon.

Well, I'd recommend not killing and eating a sentient being. But if I were already personal chef to Asmodeus or something, I'd do Poached Nymph (In a white Elven wine).

    Poached, hm? Could be done.
