    Lock-Up

Bolton's mind went blank as he felt the cable snap above him, his surprise punctuated by the loud crack of a sniper's bullet. Who was this guy, to be able to swing around, bring a rifle to bear and then shoot cleanly through a reinforced swing-line? Those were his thoughts, anyway, after he regained his senses. He didn't feel anything broken, but the wind was knocked out of him and he gagged behind his mouth, gasping for air. This is not ideal.

When his eyes clear and he manages to get his bearings, he sees that he's landed near the warehouse's perimeter gate. Which is good, because it means that he can just go inside and make his way up - not that he has a choice, now, since his grapple has been reduced to a lump of metal and some broken string. Then he sees the two women - one apparently a police officer, the other in a trench coat and big black sunglasses - being accosted by thugs.

He unclips his nightstick from his belt and charges at one of the thugs. Upon reaching him, he raises the tonfa high and brings it down on the man, at the junction of his neck and oh so breakable shoulder blade. The force of the blow, should it connect, would likely shatter the bone into pieces.

    Actions:
    Spoiler
    Show
Moving to the nearest thug and attacking his shoulder. The tonfa is a Strike, DC 22. A roll of 17 or higher is a critical. If I drop him, Takedown Attack lets me go after another thug in range.

    Warehouse Front

The three wade into the fray of mobsters, almost as if this was their sole purpose in life. They move fluidly, as one unit, despite having never seen each other before. They recognize a current common purpose, and a desire to fight. And in the thick of battle, that is all they need.

A punch. A strike. A block that leaves one open but saves another from a would-be fatal blow. And by the end of it, the baseball-bat and knife-wielding goons are lying unconscious on the concrete.

Of course, the mob had other weapons. Ten feet behind the first batch of guards was another wave of ten, armed with machine pistols. Opening fire, each of the trio is forced to dodge and weave, trying to seek cover. Two are lucky. Lock-Up was not.

    Spoiler

As I said. Lock-Up. Make 3 DC 18 Toughness Checks.

    Warehouse Back

A sound plan...if it wasn't for the fact that there wasn't a shred of cover between the fence and the warehouse wall. One could only be stealthy so far; a single man approaching a warehouse couldn't if he tried. Motion sensors attached to the grounds also made his efforts useless.

A sound plan...if he hadn't forgotten that the roof of the warehouse was occupied by a very skill marksman with a very accurate sniper rifle. The mob's premier hitman. The Smiler.

All in all, Luigi thinks to himself. Not a sound plan.

Cowards and their guns. Wasn't that always the way of it? Without their iron, these two-cent hoods wouldn't be worth the clothes on their backs. It's why he doesn't use one, himself. If they believe that he doesn't need a gun to be effective at taking them down, they'll fear him all the more. He tries to throw himself out of the way of their fire, but he's a large man and three hit home. Two are absorbed by his armor, the thick Kevlar and heavy ceramic plating protecting the vulnerable flesh underneath. But one of the oncoming rounds finds a chink in his suit, where two plates meet at a seam, and worms its way through to pierce his left side, between two of his ribs. He grunts in pain and leaks a little blood through the wound, but his suit holds him together and the armor managed to take most of the bite out of it. Still, he'd favor that side until he managed to get it fixed up back at the Slammer.

He staggers, but only for a second, before standing tall and acting as though the bullet in his abdomen is only a minor inconvenience instead of a potentially life-threatening occurrence. He rushes one of the gunmen to engage him in melee, his nightstick raised high for another crippling blow. He thinks that he'll ruin this man's right arm so that he'll never use a gun again.

    Actions:
One move action to reach the gunman that managed to hit me.
One standard action to Strike him with the nightstick (DC 22): (1d20+7)[15]
Elusive Target feat should doubles the penalties of firing on me while I'm in melee.
Takedown Attack may allow me to assault another nearby goon.

The woman heard the shouts of the armed mooks and was already moving before they could take aim. She heard the bullets whiz past where she had stood moments before, and sought out a path to them.

Courage is nothing extraordinary. It's merely running towards the sound of gunfire instead of away from it.

She attacked one of them from the side, tackling him to the ground and striking him hard in the throat. She thought she heard him gurgling blood as she rose to stare down the last gunman that was firing at her. The thug's automatic pistol shook in his hand as this angel of death stared him down.

"Who are you? What the hell are you?!?" he said, his voice quavering in fear. The woman momentarily stopped in her relentless approach.

    Katherine Walker

Katherine dives to her left, and thanks God or whoever that there is a great big burly man right there to take all the attention and fire from the crooks. Her weight comes down on her bad leg and she stumbles and manages to take that and make it into a clumsy roll, just a bit too close to the men with guns for her liking.

She gets up and tries to dodge out of the way when a bullet thuds into her Kelvar, and she spends a bit too much time praising her luck to stop the next one slipping past her shoulder. It's painful, but not delibating, and Katherine takes the advantage and forces the pain away and grips the tip of her cane: she knows that this is just cashing on more and more checks that her body can't return, but she doesn't care. They're close enough to her, and they have guns, and she has a cane, with a sword she's sworn not to use - aw, hell, resolutions were made to be broken.

For the first time in her life, she slides the sword out of her cane, whipping it out in front of her. It doesn't gleam in the sunlight, nor is there any play of reflection along its edge: she stopped polishing the blade six months ago since - since that night. But it's a dramatic flourish, and she knows, as she drags it through the air and towards her targets, that it's never felt as good in her hands as it has now. There's nothing fancy about the way she handles it, nothing skilled - it just says that here is a pointy slab of metal, and a woman who is very good at sticking things in places where you don't want to be stuck.

She's in pain, bleeding, outarmed and outnumbered. Time to even the odds a little. She grins, and dashes towards the fray.

Luigi takes another shot that hurts his arm. Painful, but not that much. He keeps moving next to the warehouse wall to get cover from the sniper. Against the wall and with some cover, he tries to blend with the shadows to go unnoticed. He keeps his eyes peeled, for if he sees the Smiler peeking from the edge of the roof, he's going to put a bolt in his eye. Luigi also tries to see if there is any ladder to the roof, or any other entrance to the warehouse, like a window or something like that.

How many gunshots has he survived today - six? seven? - thanks to his armor? Thank God for Kevlar and ceramic plates! He must make for an imposing figure, black-masked and massive, taking four bullets to the chest and barely rocking backwards. His left side throbs, reminding him of his mortal vulnerability, but all it accomplishes is ticking him off. He hefts his nightstick - the blind, avenging avatar of justice - and moves towards another gun-toting thug with all of the inevitability of a freight train. He wishes that his tear gas pellets had a smaller radius of effect; as it was, he couldn't use them to take the lot out at once without also equally debilitating himself. It wasn't as though they were going to allow him an opportunity to don his gas mask, after all. So bludgeoning them into submission was going to have to work. All things considered, it was better than nothing.

    Actions:
Moving forward to attack another thug with the nightstick. Strike DC 22, critical threat on a roll of 17 or higher, Takedown Attack may apply. Elusive Target makes me harder to hit when I'm engaged in melee.

    Crimson Avenger

The smell of cordite assaulted her nostrils. The gunmen were shaken by her unyielding assaults on their friends as though scum like them had friends and they raised their guns to fire at her as a unit. She was already on the move again, but this time she was a bit slower. One of the bullets grazed her, tearing her coat and drawing blood, but the other sank deep into her leg. She cried out in pain as the hot lead buried itself in her flesh.

    Move, girl. Move or die.

    Can't! It hurts!

Pain is weakness leaving the body. Now move, or you are gunned down. Like your mother. Like your sister. Like...

"NO!", cried the Crimson Avenger, the edge in her voice made sharp by her pain. She changed course, heading for the man that had shot her, grabbing his pistol arm by the wrist. She threw a closed-fist strike into the man's throat, and followed that into a vicious elbow strike on his forearm, aiming to break the bone and render him useless. Her other hand controlled the gun, and would grab it if he relinquished his grip.

Ever the cop, the first thing Katherine does is lean down and pick up one of the automatic guns - for use as evidence or weapon - and plop it into her pocket. Then she stands up, expecting some searing pain from her shoulder.

...funny. It doesn't hurt. Perhaps the bullet had just grazed her, or she was stronger than she imagined, or just pure dumb luck. Whatever. She was just going to bless her lucky stars that she was fine. She looks down at the minions and takes a cursory check as to how they're doing, and considers spending time calling an ambulance before rejecting that thought: there's not enough time and police and people are going to be rushing here soon enough anyway. Let the bastards wait.

Turning to the freaks - and quite unaware of how much like a madwoman she looked, with her ruffled hair and torn clothes and bloodstained swordcane - she motioned towards the doorway and spoke and moved sharply. "No time to waste, dumbasses. Let's get through that doorway and introduce ourselves on the move."

Everyone is going through the front door. Including Luigi.

    The Warehouse

The warehouse has changed since Bolton and Walker last saw it. Where before it was in a state of slight disrepair, was not in use and had not been for some time, now it was fully functional and active. Chemical vats churn furiously, creating the Mob's new drug; the steam from the processing chemicals fills the air. The door to the warehouse opens onto a catwalk; looking down at the vats, one can see the bubbling green liquids they contain.

At the far end of the catwalk lies the supervisor's office, where a young, thin looking man is apparently scribbling over at a desk; Katherine recognizes him as former Gotham University professor Johnathan Crane. He's murmuring to himself as he does so, but at this distance, the words can't be made out, and the glass window of the office are too smudged to read lips.

But standing in between the office and the entrance is the Smiler, and it is only now that everybody can get a good look at him. He's a surprisingly unremarkable-looking man; a bit tall, slightly thinner than average, but one really wouldn't pick him out of a crowd-or a lineup. His brown hair is uncombed, and lying messily on top of his head, fails to cover a prominent widow's peak. A somewhat overlarge nose completes the man's features.

He's dressed in a tuxedo, a classic black single-button, complete with bowtie, and gold cufflinks. Presumably, to mock the occasion. And cradled in his grey-gloved hands is a military-issue sniper rifle, barrel pointed down towards the party...

First off, reroll initiative in the OOC thread.
    Smiler: (1d20+4)[21]

Secondly, this combat is going to be done a bit differently. For starters, I have a grid. link. Everybody start between rows M and N, columns 7-9. Feel free to place yourself; much less work for me. Don't mess with anyone else's characters or the NPC/other placements, though.

Thirdly, the steam from the fumes is such that everybody making a ranged attack will need to roll a d20 in addition to their attack roll; a result of 1-4 (inclusive) is an automatic miss. An aimed shot(full-round action) will negate this.

Finally, everybody get a hero point, because I'm nice. And this is the final combat in Gotham: Year One, so don't hesitate to use them.

    Katerine Walker

The cop feels her guts churn as she looks at the many chemical vats whirling their contents around her head. These were what she had been looking for, searching for, and it's almost surreal to see them so close to her after all this work. But where were Carmine's men? Where were the people supposed to be working this place? Had they gone all because of the Smiler, and if so, why had they abandoned such a lucrative operation? And why was the factory still operating?

Those questions were all for later. Katherine drops the sheath of her cane and picks up the automatic gun she'd collected with that hand instead, standing there with her sword in her left hand and a gun in her right. Her leg's hurting like hell- too bad. There's not enough time to waste on that.

The detective is still thinking, though. Why is the Smiler standing there, out in the open? Why such a obvious sight, why such a distraction? The answer has to lie behind him, what he's guarding, and that's Crane. She has to get to there, and to do that she has to get past the Smiler. Looking up at his mouth, Katherine wishes she'd worn heavier body armor today.

Well, it was Gotham. No-one ever said it was going to be easy. Pointing up to where the Gotham professor is sitting, the cop yells to the others behind her: "I'm after him! Start shooting at the other guy, goddamit!"

    And with that, she's off.

    The Smiler

The corners of his lips twitch upwards as he peers down his scope. The rifle is equipped with a silencer; there is barely a whisper of noise, and no flash of light as the weapon fires another round.

Full-Round Action: Aimed shot at Luigi.

Shooting on the move is never a good idea; combined with the cloud of smoke from the chemicals, Walker's shots go far off the mark; the Smiler doesn't even need to move to avoid them. The hitman doesn't even flinch.

"Presto detective, we'll cover you." agrees Luigi. He takes a moment to aim and shoot a well aimed bolt to the shoulder of the Smiler, and then moves behind one of the vats for total cover. Pressing his back to the wall of the container, Luigi awaits for the next chance to get a clear shot.

Luigi's shot also goes wide; the steam from the chemicals throws off his aim as his clothes grow heavier with vapor.

    Lock-Up
    Situated at Square N-9

Things were different, now that the warehouse was in full operation. The churning vats filled the building with a cloying chemical smog that would make aiming more difficult than normal. Luckily for him (maybe for the first time today) he favors close-quarters combat with the nightstick over ranged gunplay. Like Katherine, there are many questions about the situation that he would like answered, but he supposes that there'll be time for that later. What he really chides himself on is having rushed in without a plan. It's like Lucius always said - "Being unprepared is being prepared to fail." Lyle knew better than anyone else that his rash tendencies and fiery temper were his greatest faults and, while he was working on reining them in, he wasn't quite there yet.

But there wasn't time to worry about that. The female cop, favoring a crippled leg, rushed past him on her way to engage the bookish-looking man in the rear office while screaming "Start shooting at the other guy, goddamit!" The jolts him out of his contemplations with a start and he lunges forward to grasp her by the shoulder but misses. Regaining his composure, he shouts (with a rasping growl to disguise his voice, as per usual) "No! I want them alive!" It's like she didn't know that dead men suffer nothing. And she was a police officer, for Pete's sake! But she was gone before he could react.

Following that, the other man, armed with a crossbow, takes a poorly-aimed shot at the Smiler. The quarrel goes wide and the man takes cover behind one of the churning vats of liquid drug. This momentary distraction gives Bolton a moment to think a little more tactically than he had been thus far. If he rushed the man he might sport a new orifice, courtesy of the gigantic sniper rifle that the mobster held in his hands. Better to even the playing field, first...

Grimacing and shaking his head in frustration, Lock-Up reaches towards his belt and unclips a teargas grenade. He hefts its in his hand, gauges the distance and lobs it towards the Smiler once he determines that the cop'll be outside of its range of effects once it impacts on the assassin's position. With any luck the Smiler, who isn't wearing a gasmask that he can see, will be incapacitated by the grenade long enough for Bolton to rush towards him and take him out with little to-do, or at least allow for the other woman to take a reasonable shot at him. Bolton's not above teamwork. Following that, he dashes to stand besides Luigi, behind one of the vats.

The grenade is dead on, but the Smiler doesn't seem to be all that affected by it. Perhaps constant exposure to the drug fumes had hardened him to the effects of the gas. Perhaps he was just lucky.

    Crimson Avenger

The Avenger blinked as the loud retort from the rifle rebounded in the vaulted warehouse ceiling. It froze her for a brief moment, while the three others bounded past her. Two ducked for cover, while the policewoman limped past the sniper.

He doesn't have the advantage indoors, but the rifle is still powerful. Problem with that is that longrms are damned useless in CQC.

She bolted towards the man and kicked the neck of the rifle, trying to knock his aim off and take him down before he could do more damage. "No cops are dying today, but I haven't made up my mind about you." She aimed several blows at his torso, trying to break ribs and make it hard for him to breathe. An enemy in pain is an enemy too distracted to hurt you. She grinned beneath her scarf as she felt the blows connect solidly with his midsection.

The point of the weapon is knocked out of the way for a brief moment, but the Smiler, holding the rifle in a single hand, manages to almost effortlessly recover from the blows like a punching dummy.

Then the rifle barrel circles back towards the Avenger, and the fog does little to conceal the woman as the Smiler pulls the trigger at point blank range...

    Crimson Avenger

The Crimson Avenger furrowed her brow as the assassin before her recovered swiftly too damn swiftly from her blows. The grin on his face infuriated her made her see red. "So, you're used to pain. Good. So am I." She saw his intent in his eyes before the move to train the rifle back on her was made, and she easily stayed to the side of the longarm. His rifle went off with a deafening explosion, the gunsmoke competing with the acrid fumes and losing. Elsewhere in the warehouse, the bullet ricocheted uselessly about the superstructure.

Keep him distracted. Don't let up the assault. Make him pay.

    Lock-Up

The sound of a sniper rifle issuing its retort fills Lyle with a sense of impending doom. What kind of man could, unprotected by a gas mask, simply ignore the effects of tear gas? The Smiler certainly wasn't your standard mafia goon, that was for sure. Well. Enough hiding behind vats, anyway. He knew when he'd first slid the mask over his face that he'd die in it. No point shying away now when there's justice to be done. He unclips his nightstick from its honored position on his belt and approaches the catwalk, leaving the other man behind. He approaches carefully at first and hesitates only when he sees that one of his erstwhile, unknown compatriots has already engaged the Smiler in melee. From the looks of her she's unharmed, which is a blessing. It's always good to have competent allies, even if you don't know anything else at all about them.

At that point he breaks into a sprint and barrels down the walkway towards the two combatants, his body ducked in the hopes of avoiding his enemy's fire. The fact that the Smiler's already engaged in melee should offer him some protection, but maybe not much, depending on how willing the Smiler is to risk taking aim at him. When he reaches the little two-person-tussle he pivots around them so that he can stay out of the woman's way, raises his nightstick to its apex and then brings it down on the Smiler in a way that he knows is capable of crippling a man. Of course, what with there now being a three-person fight in the works, actually landing a blow might be somewhat problematic...

Note: I've taken a rank in the Elusive Target feat. I don't suppose the bonus also applies to whenever an opponent is firing out of melee, too? If so, he'd take a -8 penalty instead of the traditional -4 due to being distracted.

Unfortunately, the Smiler takes advantage of Katherine's presence as well; his countermove leaves the police officer still between the two of them, and Bolton is forced to abort his attack.

    Katherine Walker

The cop tumbles her way forwards through the fog, and hears a shot: she automatically dodgess herself forwards and, with usual luck, lands on her bad leg.

In between all the chaos, there is the sound of one police officer falling down on the catwalk and fiercely cursing her bad leg.

In combat, stillness is death. Katherine stumbles up, her hands fumbling and only just finding the gun and swordcane, and she tries to make her way towards where Crane should be. In the fumbling and the fog, it's hard to tell where she's supposed to be going, and her head's still ringing from that fall and rattle.

She thinks she's going the right way when see sees just beside heer a black suit, standing out in the steam like a blot on the air.

    Ah, well.

Her gun drops to the floor with a clatter, and with both hands on her swordstick Katherine lunges her greeting towards the Smiler.
