It is the night before the graduation ceremony, and each of you are in your respective rooms. It is a cold night, and normally you would be fast asleep, warm in bed, but tonight, something is different. You've heard whispers about Masters giving their favored students farewell gifts each year before they graduate and move on to better things. They usually bring their gift to the ceremony the next day, to show off to the other Masters (its a kind of friendly competition they have to see who gives the best gift every year essentially). You wait in eagerness, hoping for a knock on your door...

Dorrizit - Marcus Burke

Name: Marcus Burke
Appearance: Marcus is tall. It is likely that this is the first thing that anyone would notice about him. Marcus stands six and a half feet, and his appearance is made more intimidating because his ripples with powerful muscles. He has a lean form for his size and strength, but he practically exudes and aura of raw physical power. He typically wears simple, unadorned clothing. Despite his size, he moves with an easy grace. His face is open and usually cheerful, with reddish brown eyes and a thick head of russet hair.

Background:
Marcus is an orphan, born in Erilyn. He grew up on the streets, stealing food to survive and managing to barely scrape by. In order to survive, he became very good at fighting, and his body quickly developed to reflect this. He became immensely strong, even by the high standards of Erilyn. Unsatisfied with his life and recognizing that he had an unusual level of fighting ability, Marcus left Erilyn and began traveling, working as a caravan guard to support himself. He gained a small reputation for skill and effectiveness during this time.

After a while, Marcus developed a bond with a specific merchant, Feldan, and began working exclusively for him. Feldan had taken a liking to the honest, taciturn man, while Marcus enjoyed the company of the more jovial Merchant. The two grew very close. In many ways, Feldan was like the father that Marcus never had. They traveled together for several years, but Feldan saw that Marcus could become very successful, if he had a chance. Upon this realization, Feldan discussed it with Marcus, who accepted Feldan's judgment. Feldan sponsored Marcus' entry into the Wren Royal Academy. Marcus, already adept at unarmed combat, proved to excel at almost any task put in front of him.

Marcus is soft spoken and stoic, but he thinks before he speaks. He dislikes violence, but has no aversion to its use if it is necessary. He is hard to get to know, but very loyal once he has made a friend. He is also rather generous to those who have less than him. He enjoys reading in his free time. In battle, Marcus shuns the use of traditional weapons; his strength is so enormous that he has broken almost every weapon he has tried to use. Instead, he relies on his raw power and speed, as well as making use of his surroundings, both tactically, or as a supply of improvised weapons.

Name: Adelina
Appearance: Standing at average height, Adelina wears a fashionable gown tailored for her body. The gown is an elegant black contrasted lightly with gold embellishments and embroidery. Her skin shines in a pinkish tone, not tanned or pale – a lovely in-between. Tied up in a braided bun, Adelina's golden blonde hair frames her face, allowing her icy blue eyes the majority of any attention. Overall, Adelina's appearance is stunning.
Personality: Adelina knows that she's attractive and uses it to her advantage often. She enjoys others believing that she is a defenseless girl and then proving them wrong later. However, her temperament adapts to situations just like the element of water she controls. To those she distrusts, she maintains a chilling demeanor. If they manage to prove their worth, she becomes friendly, yet guarded with her emotions. While she is not the most friendly with strangers, she's willing to help with their problems given that the situation is not suspicious. When faced with enemies, she becomes a force to be reckoned with by damaging foes and healing allies from afar.

Background: Adelina came to Valdale from her hometown of Clearport to prove herself. While most nobles lived in Aldcrest, her father prospered as the admiral of a shipping fleet. Her mother was a sickly woman and died when Adelina was only four years of age. For as long as she can remember, her older brother has taken care of her due to her father's frequent trips. Now that she is of age, her brother is stepping into their father's business as a captain of one of the ships. Her father is quite overprotective, and the act of going to Valdale is an effort to prove to him that she can handle herself. Ever since she was young, her brother has always had more freedoms than she has. Her father wasn't always so protective, but the incident that occurred when she was six caused his change of attitude. She and her brother were accompanying their father on one of his trading routes. Adelina was peering over the edge as she watched the waves swirl around the sides of the ship. In an instant, a wave towered over the side, sweeping her into the ocean. She struggled to swim against the power of the ocean as her brother yelled for help. When her father appeared at the scene, his first sight was Adelina's head being swallowed by the raging waves. Her clothing was dead weight and started to sink towards the depths. As she was clenching onto her final breath, she was blinded by a light enveloping around her. The light provided a warm sensation; her skin felt dry even though she was underwater. Unable to see due to the bright light, she was unsure of her surroundings, but she felt two beings lifting her to the surface. One seemed to be a female while the other was male, but there was an oddity about them. She also felt scales of what seemed to be the tails of two large fish. Seeing the light where Adelina had disappeared, Adelina's father dove into the ocean off the side of the ship, swimming to the spot where Adelina was about to rise to surface. As quickly as they had helped her, the two helpful beings let go of her and vanished into the sea. Her father reached her quickly and guided her back to the side of ship where a lifeboat had been lowered. Whatever those magical beings were, they awakened Adelina's innate connections to the magics of light and water.

-Appearance: Ophelia is a tall young woman. She has long red hair which she usually keeps in a braid, and grey eyes. She has a medium sized cut on her left cheek. She has lightly browned skin and a few small burn marks on her arms. She’s quite a strong woman, and therefore muscular.

-Background: Ophelia was born in a small village near Waylyn, where her father was a renowned blacksmith. When her older brother died, her father decided that she should take over the family business when he retired, and began to teach her smiting. He hoped she could replace the son he had lost. She appeared to have a real talent for it. Her father taught her all his secrets, including how to melt and shape metal with fire magic.
They never actually told her exactly what happened to her brother. They said he was murdered, but that was all she knew. Until one night, when she came across a group of drunks. As soon as they saw her , they began to yell obscene things at her. She ignored it, these things happened quite often. But then one of the men said something about her brother. Ophelia loved her brother and wouldn’t let anyone insult him. She made her way over to recognizing the one that insulted . He yelled at her, “Who do you think killed him? He wasn’t even interested in smiting. I killed him so your father had a spot open for an apprentice. But no, daddy wanted to keep things in the family. A girl as a blacksmith, it’s ridiculous. “ Ophelia always had a bad temper, but she almost exploded when she heard that. But the man grabbed her before she could react. “Go home to daddy and tell him you don’t want to play with fire anymore. Leave that sort of stuff to the real men.” She didn’t waste any time and began to hit the man as hard as she could. But she was no match for him. He was more experienced and had combat training. He made a cut in her cheek, as a sign of her defeat. Her father was disappointed when she came home. She had lost a fight.That night, she decided to get some training herself. She grabbed her possessions and left for Valdale, one of the best schools to improve one’s fighting skills. In her absence, Voldark, the drunk murderer , took up her apprenticeship with her father

Ophelia, like every other student about to graduate, couldn't sleep.
She was sitting on her windowsil, looking at the night sky.
She wasn't scared, she knew she would graduate. She had worked very hard after all, there was no reason why they wouldn't let her. And still, deep inside her, a voice told her she wasn't good enough.

She pushed the thought away. She did just fine.
The instructors would have told her if she didn't.
She looked at the stars. Mom always said her brother was up there. Could he see her, and if so, would he be proud of her?
She sighed, making her way over to the bed. It was cold.
She wondered if her master would give her his gift . Nah, that probably was too much honour. She did fine, but wasn't the best.
But just maybe...

Marcus Burke

Marcus cannot sleep. It is not excitement, precisely, that keeps him awake. Rather, it is a kind of trepidation. For the last few years, the Wren Royal Academy had been his home, and he had fallen into a routine. Now, on the eve of his graduation, he had no idea where he would go next. He had no friends or family to go back to, and the closest person he had, Feldan, was a caravan merchant and would be very difficult to find. He could simply apply directly to the military, but his unusual abilities could prove a hindrance in an environment that encouraged conformity.

To take his mind off of his anxieties, Marcus is currently reading a book, a saga of some ancient hero whose tale had been passed down through the generations. He is sitting cross legged, leaning back against one of the walls of his room. On a whim, he looks up from the text and out his window.

Adelina Mathers

Sighing softly, Adelina sat at her desk while gazing into the mirror hanging on the wall. She was in a restless state; moreover, she hadn't even started to get ready to sleep. She slipped her shoes off and began to undo her braided bun. When not up in the bun, her golden hair reached midway down her back. Picking up a vanity brush off the desktop, she brushed her hair a few times before she stopped and stared at her reflection in the mirror with discontent. The cold evening air didn't seem to bother her; in fact, it was comforting to her.

However, tonight was no ordinary night. The Academy's graduation ceremony was tomorrow, and the thought of it lingered in Adelina's thoughts. While Adelina had been quite adept in her master's lessons, she was worried that she wasn't good enough to be chosen as a graduate. While her other classmates pondered about gifts, she could only think about how she was so close to a milestone in proving her ability to her family...so close, yet her mind was still restless. In the corner of eyesight, she noticed her unfinished glass of water from earlier in the evening. At room temperature, the water was chilling to the touch. Dipping her pointer finger into the water, Adelina swirled a ripple in the water glass, bringing her wandering mind to a seemingly peaceful state. Removing her finger, she moved the glass to her bedside table when walking over to her bed. Climbing into her bed and wiggling under the covers, she stared up at the ceiling...waiting for sleep to close her eyes.

Knock Knock Your door opens slightly. "Heyyy! Ophelia!" A fairly large man enters the room. You recognize him as your instructor, Garn. He has trouble fitting through the door he is so big. "Good, I see you were already awake. Expecting me to come by, eh?" He gives a slight chuckle. "Well here, I made this for you." He produces a long wrapped item from behind his back and hands it to you. "I will be sad to see my favorite student leave..." He seems genuinly sad about it. A frown is painted across his rugged face, although it is somewhat difficult to see under his large, brown beard.

As soon as Marcus looks away, his door bursts open, and he immediately locked hands in a grapple with his mentor Ulridge. "HAHA glad to see you're prepared!" he says with a large grin on his face. "You're the only one that's matched my strength in years of me bein here, kid!" He continues the grapple, but stops it soon after. If you look out of your now busted door, you can see a large audience forming from the sound of the crash. "That's why I'm givin you this." He tosses a large shield on the ground and it clangs fairly loud on the stone. "Figured since you got the muscle ta use it, might as well give it ta you. No one else even touches the thing." The shield looks dented and beat up, most likely from people dropping it. There was once something painted on the front, but it has since, for the most part, faded.

Your door opens slowly, and through it enters an older lady, although while older, she has still aged fairly well by any standard. "Hello dear." She has a grin on her face. Lady Isabelle has been almost like a second mother to you during your stay at the academy. "I'm sure you've heard about the gifts we're giving out by now. Well I've brought one for you." She produces a translucent sphere from a velvet bag she had been carrying. It looks to be about 4-5 inches in diameter, and appears to be made of glass. "One of my favorite little toys I've picked up over the years..." She holds it out in the flat of her palm. It doesn't not budge at all as she closes her eyes. As her eyes are shut, you see the sphere before you mold itself slowly into a small statuette. The level of detail is astonishing, an almost exact replica of the old woman herself, standing in the same posture in which she presents the item. She opens her eyes, and hands it to you for examination.

Adelina Mathers

As the door opened, Adelina sat up in her bed. Slipping on her shoes, she stood up as Lady Isabelle entered the room. Adelina's mother departed this world when Adelina was only a child; therefore, Adelina had very memories of her mother. Being raised by her older brother and father, Adelina was lacking her lady-like charm when she entered the academy. Lady Isabelle treated Adelina as her own daughter, and this gave Adelina a much-needed female role-model. During the years training in the magical arts, Adelina also embodied a few mannerisms she observed from Lady Isabelle and incorporated them into her demeanor.

At the mentioning of a gift, Adelina's body became tense. "Am I worthy enough of a gift?," she thought. Her thoughts were silenced as she watched in amazement and anticipation as the glass orb was revealed and displayed. Astonished by the transformation of the magical item, Adelina stared intently at the object as it was placed into her hand. Closing her eyes, Adelina felt a slight quiver run up her arm as she waited excitedly to see what it would do in her hands.

You hold the small figure in your hands. With closer observation, you can see what seems to be a small air bubble inside, except that it is filled with a tiny bit of clear liquid, probably water. "The source of the objects magic. Do not tamper with that bubble, lest you wish to destroy my gift. That will only happen if you intently will it to, however, so please, refrain. Now do try it out." You attempt to mimic the process the Lady had displayed. You close your eyes, and your mind rushes with all sorts of objects. You can hear Isabelle give a small chuckle. "Focus, child. Think of an object, a vase. Concentrate on it. Now imagine, it being filled slowly with water. Focus on the water as it rises and fills the container." You can slowly feel the weight of the object changing. After a few moments, you open your eyes, and see in your hands a small vase in your hands. You can still see the small air bubble within the object. "Well done! You'll get better with it with some practice, don't worry. As your affinity towards water grows, you'll be able to do much more with it. You'll also find that it has adverse affects on light magic as well... but I'll leave it to you to discover what it can truly do." She has a long, proud smile on her face as she leaves.

Ophelia couldn't help but smile a little when Garn opened the door.
She tired to hide a chuckle while he struggled with the door.
"No, I actually did not expect you, sir", she said."I just couldn't sleep, tomorrow is the big day after all."
Could it be that he came to give her his gift?
They always got along great, she had learned so much from him.

Her smile widened when he gave her the wrapped package.
"Thank you so much, sir. I am honored to be your favorite student."
She slowly unpacked the package.
"I will miss you too, you were my favorite instructor."
She frowned."I am going to miss the school."
"What will happen after we graduate?"

Marcus

Marcus jumps to his feet in surprise as the door bursts open and Ulridge charges in. He instinctively responds to Ulridge's mock assault and locks hands with his mentor, using all of his strength to counter the incredibly powerful man. He smiles, happy to see Ulridge and happy for his thoughts to be interrupted. After a few seconds, both men tire and release from the grapple. When Ulridge presents the shield to him, Marcus bends over and picks it up, straining a bit to heft the massive object. He looks it over for a few seconds, then turns back to Ulridge.

"Thank you. It is quite impressive."

You unravel the cloth. It is a beautifully crafted sword. The blade extends about two feet from the guard, and from the tip of the hilt to the end of the guard is another eight inches. You notice that the blade appears to be similar to iron, but is much more reflective than iron. It is probably some sort of iron alloy. You have probably read of this or picked up on some knowledge of metals from your father, but it is exceedingly rare and difficult to produce anything like it. You've heard it called "steel" before. Both sides of the blade are sharpened, and the balance seems to be perfect. The tip, however, seems to be made of a different material. It is a nearly pitch black, but you can tell that it is also some sort of an alloy, the base material most likely being obsidian, a volcanic glass. You fear that even a poke of the tip will cause bleeding. The black on the tip seems to form a diamond shape at the end of the blade, and has a full tang within the steel blade, as you can see black circles within the flat of the blade, progressively getting smaller. The grip is wrapped in a thin strap of leather, dyed dark red. The pommel is a circle, made of the same material as the tip (although it is not sharpened), both sides engraved with a letter "G" in gold, and in exceedingly fancy writing (obviously standing for the smith's name, Garren Garn). The guard seems to be made of steel as well, and extends for about four inches, on both sides, until it curves in on itself, making a nice curl. There are various golden inlays on the guard, enhancing its beauty. The weapon is truly a piece of art. When you grasp the hilt, you have a sense of connection to it, as if it were a person you have known for a long time, and you are simply with them once again.

"After school? Hrrmm.... Well that really depends on tha individual. Many return to their lives before they joined, some choose to wander the country, or leave for the rest of the world. Others simply join the military."

"Yep. It'll take a bit of gettin used to, but the key is ta think of it as an extension of yourself. You wunna shift yer weight, maybe do a turn or sumthin, and kinda use it as a kind of counter-balance, and then swing with tha thing. Heh heh, no one really expects it when you knock em' out with it." The shield is big. Given the description you have just been given, it is far more likely that the wear and tear on the gift was not caused by time or miscare, but rather it being used as a weapon, probably for quite some time. It is also just as likely that this belonged to Ulridge, and was probably his weapon of choice, before giving up his mercenary life to join the academy. A few times in class, he has made a reference to an old dancing partner of his, and this is probably what he was actually talking about. The muscular man didn't seem like the type that would be especially graceful on his feet. Upon closer inspection of the back of the shield, you notice that there are actually two handles, both of which, fairly large. It would be possible to grasp both handles with each hand for more direct, overhead smashing goodness, or keep one hand free by only grasping one of the handles with one hand, sticking the arm through the gap in the other handle. You also notice, however, that there is a small crack in one of the handles, so it would probably be a good idea to have a smith repair it. "Take good care of her. She's been good to me most of mah life, and she'll take good care of you too if you treat her right."

Ophelia looked at the sword in awe.
"This is steel! It's so difficult to make!"
It was absolutely beautiful.
She swang it around a few times, getting used to the feel of it in her hand.
It was perfect. It was truly made for her.
"Thank you so much. I really don't know what to say."
She gave him a big smile.
"I'll never forget this"

The large man bows in appreciation. "Thank you, young'n. Now it's gettin tah be pretty late, so I'm thinkin that I'll be off to sleep. I'd advise the same tah you, lest you're wantin to fall asleep during the ceremony!" He gives a soft chuckle to himself. "Well I'm off." Again, he struggles to fit through the door as he exits the room. With your mentor gone, and gift in hand, you are free to do whatever you want. Perhaps swing it around a bit, or simply skip to bed?
