I've been reading this thread for a while and finally re-registered, because I've been sitting on these thoughts since the start of the LP, when MG claimed snipers are suck.

Snipers are suck?! Sure, maybe if you do nothing but random games on pubs with people who think K/D is more important than winning the game...

Here's why everyone thinks snipers are suck: because the people who tend to play snipers are the ones whose goals are most at odds with what the sniper is good for. They play as loners and instead of being a support character, they try to be the big hero, which might work for other gunner builds but is a terrible choice for the sniper. Yeah, you'll probably get more hero kills than the rest of your team, but that just means that all the XP is going to the player who does the least to complete actual game objectives, which *hurts* the team in the long run.

I'm not going to write an in-dept strategy guide for sniper builds, there's better out there ([B&B]CryWolf wrote the one I swear by), but the quick and dirty version is simple:

Weaknesses of the sniper: Low fire rate, ridiculously suboptimal for recruiting/leading/promoting minions, complete lack of built-in AOE/DoT effects

Strengths: Absurd range, *ability to use specialized ammunition*, tons of damage in a single attack

The specialized ammo mechanic is the key, though it's understandable to miss that since not a lot of players actually take advantage of it. When I go sniper, any time my team's primary casters aren't out doing something important, I'm bothering them to cast spells on my ammo. I like working with psions most, but just about any casty class will work. Get specialized ammo with either AOEs, status effects, or both - one sniper round dealing damage might not change a fight that your ally is in when it's way over their head, but when that round stuns the primary target and slows everybody around them, it means your soldier and their minions can actually retreat.

And sure, you're not one-shotting elite minions and lieutenants anymore, but you *are* doing ridiculous amounts of damage to an entire squad of enemies, which makes it that much easier for your team to just roll through them. Just watch how much of each type of ammo you have, because your casters are only making you so much and it's rare that you can actually get more off them while you're all out and active, not meeting back at your fortress. Use regular shots when you don't need the special effects.

Now make use of that range - in the early game, when people are splitting up, get in a good position where your range lets you cover multiple allies at once. In the late game, when it comes down to team fights, use your range to ensure that your team is dealing damage before anyone else has gotten attacks off, then use it to watch the entire battlefield and do things like warning your teammates that there's a berserker hiding behind that conveniently large rock, lining up a Frenzied Charge that's going to hit them all. Then watch the berserker charge out and enjoy the look of confusion when all of his targets saw him coming and managed to dodge. Then ruin the look of confusion with a shot to the face.

And once in a while, just go with the classic sniper mentality anyway. One-shotting lieutenants and killing enemy players who thought they'd escaped because they were out of your teammate's melee range is satisfying, good for your stats, and genuinely helps your team, done right.

There's only really two downsides to this build - one, you're still bad with minions, which weakens your whole team, and two, your casters would probably rather be casting on their own, not doing ranged casting through you - they're going to be short on energy or you're going to be short on useful shells. It's a delicate balance, and it takes a lot of teamwork to pull off, but I think it's worth it long-term.

Sorry about my...disappearance. Every once in a while I just get into this kind of funk where I can't be bothered to do anything at all and convince myself that nothing's worth doing. It's pretty much the reason I could never do well in school for very long, but it's always quite the temporary condition so I'm back and gengame will be continuing...as soon as I finish all this homework I've been putting off for so long. (thank god for online colleges )
