That being said, we have a problem here. I called my provider and he said that the CPU/HDD load for that site (unrelated to GG) is too big for the hosting package it's on.
I apparently need to rent out a dedicated server for this, which is a tad more expensive than the 2,50€ a month we had so far. (By a factor of 10, pretty much)

This is gonna require more thought.

The high traffic is due to non-gengame related things, actually. Gengame itself generates relatively little traffic as far as we can tell. The issue seems to be resolved for now at any rate, and donations aren't necessary, though I'm sure domo wouldn't mind the added income if you want to send some his way. I wouldn't mind money either of course by why the hell would you send it to me?
