might be the most obvious system, frankly you can't assume that someone who would take the time to type out both and rather than the shorter, simpler, and more widely comprehensible "top left square" is going to do anything the obvious way.

In his second quote he assigned the top left 1, the top right 3, and the bottom right 9.

The math was logical and made sense - as that was the only information presented on the square arrangement one must assume the most logical and sensible arrangement.

I meant for it to be a paradox-type thing. Starting at Square 6, I do indeed land at Square 1. However, n is now 1 on the right side of the equation, so n should be 1² mod 9 + 1 = 2. So square 2. But from there, 2² mod 9 + 1 = 5. And from there, 5² mod 9 + 1 = 8. And from there 8² mod 9 + 1 = 2, and we've gone in a circle. All integer squares will do so. You can solve the problem using the quadratic formula. You simply choose the number of times you have to subtract 9 in the modulo. Call this a. You need to find n such that
n = n² - 9a + 1
0 = n² - n + 1 - 9a
Then quadratic formula
n = (-(-1) ± √((-1)² - 4(1 - 9a)))/2
= 1/2 ± √(36a - 3)/2
To find solutions, you can simply choose integer a. For a = 0, you have to take √(-3), which clearly will not result in the droids numbers you are looking for. For a = 1, you get 1/2 ± √33 / 2, which is a negative number for subtraction and 3.372... for addition. So you actually did pretty okay, much better than 1. 9 would have been better tho, with solution 8.941... at a = 8 being closer.

8^th grade was 20 years ago, and I don't recall ever hearing of Modulo, or Modular Arithmetic ((yeah, I looked it up)). I suck at Math. Only did well in Geometry and Basic Algebra. After that, it's just a downward spiral of mutual hate. I hate it, it hates me.

Ahh, yes - I remember this game. It was about the time I first started thinking about joining a WW game myself, so I looked in on this game and a few others to see what they were all about. And it was... I want to say the name was two short words, like... Dirk Kris? Yeah, that sounds about right. A fairly active WW player, who especially seemed to gravitate toward more literary/media-themed games, really got into the RP aspect, and most definitely would have enjoyed the whole "corrupting an innocent" idea. Okay. I say it was Dirk Kris who wanted to RP as The One Ring and asked around for a Frodo.

a must be an integer. It's the number of times 9 will fit into n^2, or, the amount of times you subtract 9 when doing the modulo.

@Lex: All of the stuff above (except arguably modulo, but it's not very complicated) is Algebra 1 maths.
