[Now with wallpaper sizes!] I drew a Vaarsuvius.
Update 23/11/10: Completed
Standalone illustration + wallpaper sizes for 1024x768, 1280x968, 1280x800 and 1600x900 available at http://krysjez.wordpress.com/2010/11...ck-vaarsuvius/
==================
Update - Finished main work, see post #25.
Well, am drawing, anyway. Not sure if this goes in the OOTS forum or here, but Elagune posted his manga here so...
Going to try and finish this tomorrow before lunch. Thinking of making it into a poster sort of thing (you know, the kind where the character stands there in some cool pose and hir name is printed in huge sparkly letters along the side). Would anyone be interested in this as a wallpaper? I'm trying to decide if I should bother scaling it up (currently 708x968px) and redrawing the lines before it's too late.
PS: Does it look gender-ambiguous enough?Last edited by Saeyan; 2010-11-23 at 09:45 AM.

Wonderful. I especially like the whispery not-quite-anime style. And it looks gender-ambiguous to me...

Re: I drew a Vaarsuvius.
Very good!
As a clarification on the "needs less female" thing, I think it'd help if you removed some of the black around the eyes. The whole "eyeliner and mascara" look tends to be decidedly feminineSpoiler

Re: I drew a Vaarsuvius.
As everyone has already said, your V looks a bit more feminine than ambiguous, but its still a very good drawing.
I cant wait to see the finished version.

Maybe narrow out the eyes' edges a little but yes, that is a wonderful start, love to see it finished.

Re: I drew a Vaarsuvius.
Thank you for your kind comments. Unfortunately a friend came over and ate up my morning so I've only managed to enlarge and re-line, make some changes to the head and redraw the skeleton.

Lastly, I shrunk V's head by about 10% because it wasn't proportionate to the rest of the body once I got that worked out.Last edited by Saeyan; 2010-11-19 at 05:38 AM.

Re: I drew a Vaarsuvius.
I like it. I tend to think of V as a male, though I am a fan of the more feminine version you have here. Maybe do both?

Re: I drew a Vaarsuvius.
=P Yeah... But we all know Vaarsuvius is a girl. She boards with the girls whenever they stay at inns. ^^; Obvious off-hand admittance of gender.
Anyways, the drawing is nice. Though the interact between ear and hair makes me nervous. (Since hair obvious goes over the ear but you can still see the ear...)While I'm considered True Neutral, I'm secretly Chaotic and Evil. Which scored the same as my True Neutral... And higher than my Lawful and Good. =D

Re: I drew a Vaarsuvius.
For the record, I've known many men who roomed with women, and vice versa. It just so happens that the people around here are respectful enough to not try to peek or grope their roommates.
Very well drawn. Even if it's supposedly more feminine, I prefer the first drawing.

Re: I drew a Vaarsuvius.
I've completed the line art. Veros, the weird ear was because I wasn't done with the lines yet. I do my line work on several layers so I can make changes to clothes/hair without affecting the body. I merge and clean them up later. Anyway, I've completed the line art now. When I sketched the skeleton V's right leg was partially extended (like ze was leaning on the left leg) but I'm not very good with fabric and now it just looks really weird. Will probably delete the 2 wrinkles later.
Try as I might I can't seem to replicate the original look of the face after scaling it up. Instead V now has a layer of shoddily applied eyeliner. It must have something to do with how I can't handle eyeliner in real life either.
I guess when I finish this I'll release 2 files, one with eyeliner on and one with it off. Am thinking of making small changes to hands, neck and chin as well for the more feminine version. Maybe I should just release the PSD with a whole bunch of layers you can toggle on and off depending on what you think V looks like. Not looking forward to coloring. Maybe I'll just fill it in with flats to avoid tearing my hear out over the chest.
Edit: Oh snap! I left out the cloak.Last edited by Saeyan; 2010-11-19 at 09:51 AM.

Re: I drew a Vaarsuvius.
I really like the way you've drawn the body. It hits spot-on with the androgyny. The hands are very well-drawn, too, and I like the rope belt.
One idea for the face (both new types work well, btw) is to draw the cheek as a smoother line. It looks kinda... bumpy right now. And we all know that elves got baby skin
Still, very good drawing. It's cool to see the progression :-)Spoiler

Re: I drew a Vaarsuvius.
Hehe. V looks like an English teacher, somehow. :D
I suggest making the robe more foldy and wrinkly, especially around the rope belt. Go crazy with it. :P
Also, great hands. Look very fine and delicate. :)

Was going to post this as 20/11/10 1444 GMT, but the internet got switched off and blah. Anyway, here it is, something to tide the thread over until I finish the wallpaper sizes:
Notes on illustration and background color follow:
SpoilerThe font used is AquilineTwo. 100% manually painted except for runes and sparkles on flame.
Being the forgetful, careless fool that I am, I merged the document before going on to make the final round of changes. What this means is that unless I put in another hour of repainting and erasing, V is stuck on this purple-gray background. At least, it looks purple-gray to me. It's a rather unappealing color. I don't know why I chose it. Probably because I figured V would be on a separate layer from the background.
Stuff I was too lazy to do or fix:
- Awkward positioning of shadow on lower body
- Shadows on the face
- Circlet
One last thing: how does the color look on your monitor? Mine's supposed to be calibrated properly, but my artwork never looks quite the way it's supposed to when I view it elsewhere...Last edited by Saeyan; 2010-11-20 at 10:22 PM.
