    Default DW: Extraction

    Deathwatch: Extraction
    Part 1: Descent of Angels

High in the skies of Tantalus, an Astartes Drop Pod roars towards the world below. Wreathed in brilliant flame as it tears through the planet's atmosphere, the Drop Pod's black form is emblazoned with the silver and gold symbols of the Inquisition and the Deathwatch. As it draws closer to the surface, it soon becomes apparent that the world world has been tainted by the foul influence of Xenos.

Five months ago, the Castobel System was invaded by the Great Devourer. The Tyranid fleets defeated world after world, devouring all in their path and leaving nothing in their wake. Now the conflict has reached its climax; the Hive-world Castobel, from which the system takes its name, hangs in the balance. But while the forces of Humanity may still save that planet, the fate of its colonized moon, Tantalus, has already been sealed. Its battle for survival is lost, and the small world is making its final death-throes in the closing jaws of the Tyranid menace. Only hours remain before the last few traces of life are erased from its surface.

But the death of Tantalus may not be in vain. Stranded on the colony world when the Xenos invasion began, a small team of Adeptus Mechanicus biologists turned their attention from the planet's natural lifeforms to the invading Tyranids. They gathered priceless data on the bio-forms and strategies used by Hive Fleet Dagon, information which could save innumerable lives and countless worlds.

As the fate of Tantalus' was sealed, the Adeptus Mechanicus team attempted to make their escape. However, before they could flee, the Tyranid forces were bolstered by the arrival of another bio-ship carrying heavy reinforcements. Wave after wave of spore pods flooded the world with monstrous creatures and lethal predators, crushing the last remnants of the world's defenses. Their escape route blocked, the shuttle transporting the last survivor of the research team, Magos Vyakai, attempted to flee to Tantalus' southern polar regions. This location had not yet been overrun, and it was where the last evacuations and defenses would be made.

But tragedy struck. Just a few dozen kilometers short of the safety of the polar ice fields, the transport shuttle was brought down by the Tyranids. Shortly after the crash, fragmented transmissions were sent by Magos Vyakai. He reported that the shuttle was brought down near a promethium production facility, designation Pyroclast-Gamma-9, and that the data-core carrying the Xenos research also survived the crash. Contact with the Magos was lost three hours ago - the static storm caused by the Tyranid's defilement of the world's atmosphere has destroyed all vox reception. His last transmission indicated that Tyranid vanguard predators had been sighted, and that the bulk of the Tyranid swarm could not be more than a few hours behind them.

The Deathwatch frigate Thunder's Word was due to rendezvous with the Magos' escape shuttle. Now, they have scrambled to launch a last minute extraction. A Kill-Team - your Kill-Team - is now plummeting through the tainted atmosphere of Tantalus. Acrid clouds and caustic gasses slowly eat away at their Drop Pod, but the corrupted environment is no real threat to them. Soon, they break through the vile clouds, and finish the last remnant of their descent.

The Drop Pod's thrusters kick in, slowing the vessel's fall and precisely steering it towards its target. The Drop Pod still shudders violently when it impacts the earth; your Kill-Team feels nothing. After a few moments, hydraulic servos kick in, and the heavy doors of the Drop Pod begin to descend. Amber light pours in through the opening portals, revealing a desolate and scorched landscape. The the ground is barren tundra sparsely populated with crags, crevices, and brush, and the skies above are a burnt orange hue. A purple-black maelstrom stirs on the Northern horizon - a harbinger of things to come.

A data-slate was given to your team, containing various information on Magos Vyakai, Pyroclast-Gamma-9, Tantalus, and basic Tyranid data. Anyone carrying their own personal data-slate will also have access to this information. Also included amongst the data is a reference map of the target location, with the crash site already marked.

The clock is ticking. The Emperor Protects.

Feel free to introduce your characters, and describe your actions during the descent.

After exiting the Drop Pod, please make Awareness tests. Also, please let me know what weapons you currently have equipped, and whether or not you'll be in Squad Mode. You are all currently in Solo Mode, for reference.

If you want to know where you are on the map in correlation to the crash site, you may either make an Intelligence test (or any other skill you may think is applicable), or you may climb up on top of the Drop Pod to get a good look at your surroundings.

    Brother Hati

Hati relaxes, despite the shaking of the descending drop pod. He holds his helmet on his lap, his weapons secured in place as he sings of battle with a cheerful smile. After all, he goes once more to battle alongside his Brothers, however strange and unfamiliar though they may be. What could be more joyous? This day, in death or victory, there shall be glory and a blow struck against the enemies of man!

He brings his song to an abrupt stop as the drop pod impacts, still clutching his helmet as he clambers out of the vehicle. His boots tread upon solid ground again as he surveys his surroundings. "Well Brothers" he remarks cheerfully, "it seems we have much work to do".

Hati is carrying his Storm Bolter, loaded with Hellfire, Metal Storm and standard clips thanks to the Fire Selector. He has ready access to his Chainsword and also has his Boltgun and Bolt Pistol on his person should he need to fall back on them.

    Sanctius

As the drop-pot decends towards the xeno infested grounds, Brother Sanctius is praying in silence to the god-emperor for protection and his rightious fury against the enemies of man. As well as his primarch, Sanguinius, for guidance, strength and to avoid succumbing to the black rage.

After impact, Sanctius exits the drop-pod, with chainsword and bolt pistol (with 3 Mags of boltshells, fireselector) in hand, and looks around for any hostile targets.

Mikelus is quiet throughout the Drop-pod descent, reviewing the briefing in his mind while mentally encouraging the Pod's Machine Spirit to descend quickly and accurately through the embattled moon's atmosphere. A few moments before landing he checks his Bolter, offering a quick prayer to the weapon's own Spirit. He does his best not to think about the psyker he is forced to call Brother; as much as he appreciates the opportunity to work with Battle-Brothers outside of his own insular Chapter, he can barely stomach the prospect of spending so much time with a Witch. I am a disciple of the Omnissiah and a son of Dorn. I will do my duty...

Mikelus quickly disengages his restraints and steps out of the Drop Pod, Bolter held at the ready as he consults his helmet's tactical display and his implanted Augur Array, knowing that any Tyranids in the area would be immediately drawn by their Drop Pod's fiery descent. "Scanning the terrain. We are slightly off-target, Brothers." The Techmarine's already metallic voice made positively tinny by his helmet's vox link. He removes his left hand from his Bolter's grip for a moment to fiddle with a small control pad built into his right gauntlet, hoping to achieve an accurate reading of the Kill-team's location.

    Castelus

Flipping through his prayer-book with care, his armored fingers moving slowly and with purpose Castelus silently recites the hymns that helps him focus his mind. Just as the drop-pod closes in on the battle field he can feel the Warp closing in on his mind. It's right there now, so easy to touch, but dangerous. Too dangerous to use without the greatest care and the blessing of the Emperor himself.

As the pod slams into the ground the Librarian closes the book and makes sure that it the heavy chain that it hangs from is secured to his armor. With practiced ease he puts on his helmet and pulls up the hood of his heavy robe. Its white color is stained in several places of xeno and Astartes blood and the cloth is teared and riddled with bullet holes.

Bolter in hand Castelus steps out of the drop-pod and walks over to join Hati, the jump-pack turbines wining.
"Indeed. We have little time to waste if we want to get off this rock in time. What are your orders?"
While talking he slowly scans the surroundings, searching for any indications of enemies and remembering the basic outline of the map of the area he tries to figure out exactly where they have landed.

The Kill-Team step out into the tundra. The Astartes scan for enemies, but through the twilight and haze of dust kicked up from the drop, they can't see far enough to spot for hostiles. A chill wind is a blowing as well, producing an eerie howl that echoes all around.

Locking his Helmet into place, Hati turns to Castellus. "As soon as Brother Mikelus has finished his scans" he replies, with a gesture to indicate the Techmarine, "we move out. If he can identify our current whereabouts we then proceed directly to the target's last known location or any closer structures he may have sought shelter in. If not, we make for higher ground and attempt to get our bearings. We move in dispersed formation, Brother Sanctius is on point and I shall handle overwatch myself. Stay in Vox contact, move to support your Brothers when we make contact with the enemy". He grins inside his helmet. "I doubt there's much in the way of targets of opportunity left on this moon".

He momentarily turns his attention to his weapons, touching one hand to his Chainsword to check the dipole magnets before checking the clips on the Storm Bolter in his other. "Speaking of which, Brother Mikelus, do we know where we are?".

The Techmarine quickly finishes his operations, grimacing at the mild intractability of his Auspex's Machine Spirit. "Yes. We appear to have landed slightly north of the crash site. We seem to be in very close proximity to a reinforced bunker as well; it may be a security bastion or garrison quarter for the refinery, and would certainly be a possible location for the Magos to go to ground." He gestures in the direction of the bunker. "There is also another structure, in the opposite direction. I am not certain as to its function." He points towards this as well. "Both are closer to our current location than the crash site, if you wish to investigate them. I suggest we move quickly; there are no life-signs in close proximity to us, but there are certainly Tyranids in the area."

The specific description was that we were roughly five minutes away from both buildings and 15 minutes from the crash site. So, 5 minutes to the Bunker, 5-10 minutes investigating it and 10 minutes to the other building, then about 15 minutes to reach the crash site. Call it a total of about 40-45 minutes to investigate all three, or about half an hour to investigate only the bunker and the crash site. I think we can probably afford to check out each, if we want to.

Mikelus will also remain within 30 meters of the main group, and will quickly report anything out of the ordinary over the vox.

The Kill-Team leaves the landing zone and begins their trek towards the bunker. Though the time on Tantalus' was just after noon, the world around them was bathed in the dull amber haze of dusk. The cold winds blowing around them kick up dust and dirt, repeatedly limiting their view of the surrounding areas. Where they could see it, the tundra was rugged and desolate, though occasionally the Astartes would pass by a sign of life. A discarded piece of trash, a rusted piece of mining equipment... and several half-eaten corpses. They passed by several skeletal remains, clad in the tattered remnants of prison jumpsuits or the broken flak armor of a security guard. It seemed that Pyroclast-Gamma-9 had been staffed mostly of convicts and their overseers, who had stood little chance against the approaching Tyranids. A few of the security guard's appeared to have gunshot wounds in their armor; humans had an odd tendency to turn on each other in times of turmoil.

As the Kill-Team makes their way towards the structure, their are constantly surrounded by the dull wailing of the frigid winds. About halfway to the target, however, the winds die down... and the howling continues. As the wind falters, the haze of dust around the Astartes quickly fades, revealing the source of the shrieking.

Scuttling across the earth, two swarms of chitinous beasts are quickly making their way towards the Astartes. Razor sharp talons and slavering maws flash and snap amongst the writhing horde, and their Deathwatch training instantly brings the identity of the beasts into the mind's of the Astartes: Hormagaunts. Somehow, due to the dull lighting, the haze of dust, and the howl of the wind, the creatures had escaped their detection until almost the last moment. This had given the Tyranids more than enough time to mass their numbers and close the distance, giving the Space Marines little time to prepare themselves.

The Xenos were a hideous sight to behold. Black soulless eyes stared hungrily at them, while toothy maws snapped and salivated with anticipation, and wicked claws and bladed limbs flicked and flailed where hands and feet should have been. Their strange biology was wholly alien and unnatural to the Space Marines, an affront to humanity and the purity of nature. All they desired was to destroy, to kill, to devour. They weren't even animals; they were abominations, deserving of nothing more than eradication from the universe.

And the Kill-Team would quickly see to that.

Mikelus snaps to action, immediately alerting the rest of his team. "Contact, right flank. Distance 80 meters. Engaging!" The hatred in his voice is unmistakable; these abominations against the human form offend him on a level every bit as deep as his hatred for Psykers, and he pours all of the rage and scorn he has repressed in the service of the Deathwatch into persecuting them. He thumbs the Fire Selector on his Bolter, hoping to thin out the southern horde approaching his flank with his Metal Storm rounds before they close and lets loose with a barrage of the special bolts as he begins to chant one of the Litanies of Detestation, his Servo-arm waving slightly in response to his mood.

Inside his helmet, Hati grins. About time they showed up, this mission was looking like it might end up being quiet and boring the entire way through. He whirls, leveling his Storm Bolter at the northern horde, thumbing the fire selector to select the Metal Storm rounds. No sense in wasting the Hellfire rounds this early in the mission.

He laughs merrily as he depresses the trigger, letting loose a storm of metal and explosives accompanied by the droning roar of his weapon. "Hah, Brothers, I don't think this lot will last very long" he laughs over the Vox, "Shall we make it a competition? Most Tyranids felled this day, or something along those lines?".

    Spoiler

Hati fires a Full Auto burst from his Storm Bolter with Metal Storm rounds at the northern Horde.

    BS is 50(Base)+5(Armour)+20(Auto-Fire)+30(Massive Horde).

    Ballistic Skill 105: (1d100)[34](34)

No need to roll for damage, as he also automatically deals damage to Hormagaunts.

Storm doubles the number of hits, as does Metal Storm rounds. Which means he's getting 4 hits per degree of success, if I'm understanding the rules correctly. Plus 1 for the Explosive damage type.

EDIT Seven degrees of success then, but the RoF on the Storm Bolter is only 4, so 4 hits. Plus 1 for Explosive, double that for Storm, then double it again for Blast (2). Total of 20 Magnitude damage.

    Default Re: DW: Extraction

Bolt shells fill the air, the Astartes weapons thundering in their hands as they hurl deadly projectiles downfield towards the hideous Xenos scum. A hail of Metal Storm shells rip into the Northern horde, and the results are horrendous. Explosions and shrapnel shred through the Hormagaunts, reducing them nothing more than charred hunks of chitin and shredded piles of pulped flesh.

Meanwhile, the Southern horde is subjected to a volley of Hellfire rounds. The shells blast through the Tyranids' shells, filling their victims with mutagenic acid and splashing the corrosive substance upon other nearby Xenos. Hormagaunts shriek and convulse as they're eaten alive by the cleansing substance, but their unscathed comrades carry on. Sanctius fires a volley of normal bolt shells, but aside from a few glancing blows they have very little effect.

The surviving Hormagaunts carry on their assault, covering more than half the distance in naught more than a few seconds. A series of roars then echo in the distance, and out of the smoke and haze several more swarms of Tyranid appear! Approaching from all four directions, the hordes of Xenos begin to charge across the barren tundra, intent on slaughtering the Kill-Team.

Two the North and East, Hormagaunts come charging, their numbers even greater than the previous two swarms. To the West and South, a slightly differing creature approaches in two large waves. Similar to Hormagaunts, their hunched forms appear to be armed with primitive bio-weapons, as well as sharp talons and jagged fangs. The Deathwatch team instantly realizes them as Termagaunts, and their numbers are much greater than many of the Hormagaunt hordes they've encountered. However, in the midst of the Western Termagaunts and Eastern Hormagaunts, a pair of larger and more imposing creatures stride forth into battle.

Towering above the smaller Tyranids, the hideous beast even dwarfs the Astartes, scraping the sky at around 15 feet high. Both sport six limbs, though they are slightly different in appearance. Both have a pair of legs to walk upon, and then two sets of arms. The Western creature carries a large bio-weapon in its middle arms and sports a large pair of chitinous scythes on its upper arms, while the Eastern creature flexes a set of razor-sharp talons on all four arms. Dense chitinous plating covers much of their bodies, almost rivaling the power armor the Kill-Team bears. Theirs physiology is strange, and their form unnatural. Truly, these creatures iare an abomination. But the most disturbing thing the beasts possess are undoubtedly their eyes. Whereas the Hormagaunts and Termagaunts only have a soulless hunger in their eyes, these creatures' eyes spark with sentience and understanding.

With a loud roar, both Tyranid Warriors charges forth, leading their broods to war.

Alriiiiight, things are about to get interesting.

    Currently, there are 5 Hordes.

The surviving original Hormagaunt Horde is at Mag 10, and is currently 20 meters to the South.

To the North, there's a Mag 25 Hormagaunt Horde. To the South, a Mag 20 Termagaunt Horde. To the East, a Mag 30 Hormagaunt Horde with a melee-oriented Warrior accompanying them. To the West, a Mag 30 Termagaunt Horde with a Devourer-armed Warrior. All 4 of these Hordes are 80 meters away.

Mikelus watches with satisfaction as his Bolt rounds rip through the Gaunts, preparing to let loose with another volley when the second wave of Tyranids arrives. "New contacts. Engaging the Warrior-form." His tactical duty complete, he returns to privately chanting the Catechisms to himself as he flicks the Fire Selector on his Bolter again and opens fire on the Devourer-armed Warrior.

    Hati

Hati's grin never fades as he whirls to face the new threat. He thumbs the fire selector again, switching to Hellfire rounds, and levels the weapon at one of the approaching Warrior-forms. As he pulls the trigger, the roar of the weapon subtly different with it's new munitions, he notes the locations of the other groups of Tyranids. Much as he'd prefer to simply throw himself into this battle, he remains mindful of his responsibilities as squad leader, assessing the tactical situation. Though he has no doubt that his Brothers will win this battle, he considers the likelihood of further Tyranid reinforcements arriving, and the delay those endless swarms could pose to the mission.

"Brother Castellus, Brother Sanctius" he roars over the din of gunfire and dying xenos, "clear the foes to the south!"

EDIT Bah! Only two hits. At least the first one is a pretty good roll and I hit him in the head. :D
I'll handle Righteous Fury for that in the OOC thread.

    Castelus

Castelus notices with pleasure the magnificent damage the Hellfire Rounds inflicts on the Hormagaunt horde, but his satisfaction is short lived as more alien horrors emerge from the mists.
"Come then, charge to your death and our glory." He mutters quietly as he spins around to comply with Hati's orders.
    "Confirmed. Engaging the southern foes."
Deciding that the situation is grave enough to warrant another use of the powerful Hellfire Rounds the librarian takes aim with his bolter yet another time and moments later he squeezes the trigger, releasing a storm of death towards the oncoming foes.

Seeing the southern horde is within charge distance, Sanctius begins to sprint towards the horde, firing up the jump pack turbines when he gains enough speed, which sends him flying towards the tyranid., on his way down he switches to his other chainsword.
