Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
It's more effort-based than quality based, as the Challenge is more of a self-imposed-challenge than a competition-between-participants. Therefore an objective measure of quality isn't quite right for it. The point is self-improvement through constant practice, so quality control is up to the participants themselves.
Though if a submission does trip the doodle-alert, i'd say improving the submission/creating a replament for next weeks quota would be a fair deal. Unlikely to be an issue anyway.
As to more elaborate works counting as more than one, i'd vote yes. Any work with multiple pieces fit to stand on their own can be counted as multiple submissions. A couple of examples:
Two non-descript generic people playing chess, no background = 1.
Two distinct characters playing chess, no background = 1 each.
-//- playing in a cafeteria = as above +1 for the scene
-//- with a detailed mall/cityscape/other elaborate setting = characters +1 for immediate surroundings +1 for the larger backdrop. Possibly another +1 if there's a notable event or scene in the background.
Or for a duel between leaders amidst a battle you could count:
1 per leader (distinct characters) +1 per each side's mooks (assuming relatively uniform appearance) +1 for the immediate site of battle, possibly another +1 for the larger conflict in the background if decipted.
Just a pair of examples. If you think a particular work should counts for more than one, simply outline how you think it should be counted and unless it's completely ridiculous ('i made a smiley using 6 colours, it should count as 6 pieces' ) it will be counted so.
That's my take on it anyway. It is more of a disclaimer than a name. Essay, Inc., or the like are all fine as shorthand.
Things i made from clay, wire & paint.

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
I absolutely support everything IncoherentEssay said (and here I was, almost making a long post about the measuring-quality-problem before I saw that the thread had reached page 3, tsk ).
IE's suggestion makes a fairly easily comparable standard by simply defining a "creative work" as anything that would be able to stand alone aesthetically.
But please, if anyone decides to go for the "quality", heed IE's call and state somewhere how much a particular piece counts for - or I'll be mean and count it as 1
Any protests? Better ideas? I'm definitely a fan, personally.
(it'd be really nice to have the time for elaborate backgrounds - it sucks to cut them out of everything due to time constraints)Spoiler

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
Sunday's over, everyone!
IncoherentEssay passes with a ragtag team ofmurderous hoboesvaliant heroes (totally stealing your joke, IE!), a weird alien thingy and a full figurine.
Glass Mouse passes with comics and assorted character drawings, including a current (very dysfunctional) RPG party.
KerfuffleMach goes all the way out with eight character drawings (well, seven and some props).
ShadowySilence uploaded a funny poem about a highly unstable RPG party.
Shades of Gray did a big adventuring party (Artie... *snicker*) and something... strange including a whale, an upside down house and the sky.
Neoriceisgood passes with comics, a "regular guy" template and three re-did characters.
Thus, ShadowySilence fails the round.
Everyone else pass! We're awesome
It's Neorice's turn to choose a theme.
EDIT:
@Ninjaman, I'd count the angel as one under the "able to stand alone aesthetically" definition.
But should we open for a work to count as more, simply because of details/time spent? If we go for "time spent", it'll rely completely on trust (which, I guess, doesn't have to be a problem in itself, but it gives us a PR issue, and it's very easy to abuse). If we go for "pure quality", we have to put up standards and guidelines ("this level of character art counts as X, this counts as Y", "a full painting can never exeed Z", etc.). It's doable, but easily gets very complicated and imprenetable for newcomers.
A minimum quality is one thing, a gradual scale is a lot more complicated to keep measurable. Hence why I thought IE's approach was so good.
Personally, I vote for the "able to stand alone aesthetically" definition. It's simple, opens for bigger works to count for more, it's measurable, and it keeps the "iron man" spirit of the CHALLENGE.
But if there's an overall desire for a broader approach, we'll do the standards or the trust thing. No problem.
Alternatively, we just assign me the role of cruel dictator, and I decide completely the value of your puny drawings Mwahahaha!Last edited by Glass Mouse; 2011-02-14 at 07:06 AM.

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
I'm just easily amused, I guess. Mostly, he was just so out of place among those high-fantasy party members. Secondly, the thought of such a character, dungeon crawling and complaining about goblins not being "what they used to be" amuses me muchly.
Yeah, uh. There's not much to explain. I think I'm just weird
(don't get me wrong, I'm amused in a very good way - don't feel offended or anything just because I produce my own humor from awesome things)Spoiler

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
I must let you know, Glass Mouse, that I may have less than 6 submissions. That's because I've been working on a secret art project for the boards. I can PM what I have so far to you, but it's not completed. I've been working on it for the better part of this week.

Yo, I made a ton of stuff this week I don't really feel like uploading;
If the comic pages and everything aren't enough (I guess they're less than 6 pieces, hahah) notify me and I'll send you a compilation of the stuff I've done this week.

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
All right, Sunday's over!
IncoherentEssay definitely passes with sweet-looking kobold bards (on forest-themed mushrooms), demons, a full figurine and a bit more stuff.
Kerfuffle uploaded four character drawings (including a forest scout girl).
ShadowySilence didn't upload anything.
Shades of Gray passes with three character drawings and a seeeecret projekt (look forward to it - it's cool!).
Neoriceisgood.... PM me your stuff, and for now, we'll say you pass. Edit: stuff recieved.
Ninjaman is out.
Glass Mouse passes with comics and assorted drawings (including a wood elf in a forest).
So, ShadowySilence and Kerfuffle fail. Come on, guys, you can do it!
Everyone else pass.
It's HellfireLover's turn to choose a theme.
Also! IE, I owe you a drawing for passing an 8 week mark last week. Throw your request my way, and you'll have your prizeLast edited by Glass Mouse; 2011-02-21 at 08:47 PM.

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
Glass Mouse, just how much effort do I have to put into my 'finished' pieces, bearing in mind that I work and rework a piece for, oh, let's say a matter of weeks, given a choice? Do pencil sketches count, or just inked pieces? (Why, yes, I am lazy...)

Well, probably won't have anything for this week, but I should for next week.
And once the artists are revealed in the Draw Your Friends thing, I can put my submission from there up.Last edited by KerfuffleMach2; 2011-02-26 at 01:53 PM.

Hey you guys! Long time no see : )
I'm glad to see you're still going strong with the CHALLENGE.
Seventeen weeks guys (applauds!) That is just epic.
I might join again, some day - right now I have too much schoolwork (but I
really hope we'll have less homework next term).

Re: The CHALLENGE continues!
@Fraudman: Hey, good to hear from you, you poor schoolwork-troubled artiste
@ShadowySilence: The deadline may be a bit later this time as I'm away most of tomorrow (I set the deadline to 11 a.m. in my timezone, which should be the last piece of Sunday everywhere, but tomorrow I won't be home before 6 p.m.). If everything is up early, great, I'll just make status before I leave, but if not... You probably won't have any trouble making it.
