I wouldn't think continuity would really be much of an issue, really. Until you mentioned it I hadn't even thought about it, just enjoying each episode by itself. Luna's diet? ¿Qué?

Option A) It's a children's show, so Celestia is the stand-in mother figure for all the ponies. The idea is to have "mothers" be caring and wise, rather than a source of contention.

Option IRON HOOF) One of Celestia's many wars of aggression required her to bring in conscription, and this added to Parasprite plagues and Dragon attacks means that the odds of six unrelated ponies all being orphans are not inconceivable. EDIT: Or a discriminatory boarding school system

Like bees, ponies can have only a limited number of dominate full grown female ponies. Unless they become a 'princess' pony ponies will never mature to full adulthood, instead going straight to old age after a certain period. So she is literally the god-mother-princess of all ponydom. This is also why Celestia wants Luna back. She's been having to birth every single pony for the past 1000 years, and she's damn tired.

Ah, right. Well, they're making snowflakes, but there's no snow on the ground, so I'd guess some time in the fall. Granted, they could be destined for some mountaintop somewhere, but Rainbow expresses concern that Rarity could cause a drought, so they're probably meant for some place populated.

(Although her cheating in Fall Weather Friends wasn't exactly endearing.)
And frankly, Sonic Rainboom gave her enough character focus and elaboration to remove a lot of her brashness; did the Jock Ponies seriously imply that Rainbow Dash was a drop out? I can definitely see a lot of those insecurities in that episode: desperate need to impress people, clearly got low self esteem; I swear she's got abandonment issues. Explains why she was so clingy when that Griffon came around. Not got enough friends for one thing.

You know to be honest, Rainbow's cheating during the Running of the Leaves (she didn't cheat during the Iron Pony Competition - Twilight was right there judging and made no objection at any point regarding the use of wings) didn't bother me anywhere near as much as Applejack's. It's like... I know turnabout's fair play, but you're supposed to be the Element of Honesty, for crying out loud! So what if you got fooled into taking the wrong path, isn't hitching a ride on a hot air balloon all the way back into first place kind of an overkill retaliation?

In any case... yeah, it would appear she's a flight school drop out. Honestly, it seems like a wonder to me she's as well adjusted as she is:

Clearly from the really old people around people over what, twenty?, do exist; so where are they?
Not everyone's got to be an orphan! You don't got to show them, just mention them once in a while.
Unless everyone looks perpetually youthful until they hit fifty or sixty and then bamf! old person.

Well for one thing, I get the very distinct impression that out of the main cast, the only ones who are actually from Ponyville are Pinkie and Applejack. Applejack's family is pretty well accounted for, and Pinkie lives with Mr. and Mrs. Cake, who if not her parents have to at least be relatives (pies and cakes and all that). Twilight we know is from Canterlot, and Rainbow, Fluttershy (although this one is a little... odd), and Rarity are likely to have moved in from elsewhere, seeking their fortunes on their own as young adults are wont to do. Or Dash got kicked out.

Also, in Call of the Cutie, we get a good look at the school teacher Cheerilee, who is both a child of the 80s and a fair bit older than the main cast, although she doesn't look it. So there's at least some evidence to support the idea that ponies age very gracefully (or it's difficult to convey a full range of ages in Flash. Who knows? ) until they hit venerable status and/or ascend the throne of godhood and get to have both horns and wings. Lucky stiffs.
