Watching that episode with the dragon again made me realize something. When Rainbow Dash mentioned "Starting over" for her ball count, Fluttershy was pretty quick to suggest moving to a new town. Has she perhaps done this before?

Also, while she was at first relieved that the source of the smoke was "Not a fire", her original fear may have still been that there was a dragon, because dragon = fire, even if Spike's fire seems to magically send letters to princess Celeste.

And concerning her utter fear of giant dragons...could this possibly be the source of her anxiety? Perhaps she used "The Stare" on someone to force them into an encounter with a dragon, just so she could meet with it herself, and that pony met with...dire consequences.

It would certainly explain her incredible reluctance to have anything to do with large, dangerous dragons. But, presumably, there is something about dragons that she really LIKES, so she has no problem talking to Spike...

Or....maybe that's why she's so eager to talk to him. Maybe she has never had a chance to learn what makes Dragons tic, and being able to talk to Spike about "everything" was her preparing herself for the day when she might have to encounter one again.

Yes, most of this is speculative, but this is a flying pony we're talking about. As tragic as her past may be in our minds, she is still an animated yellow pony with a pink mane and feathery wings.
