...both times because Steam's programmer designed it to update the moment it detected an update rather than wait for system idle, which I know is possible to code in.

really? AFAIK, steam only updates when it starts up, or it will send you a message saying "Hey, there's a new update. Would you like to restart steam and download it?" or else there's a setting you can set so it does that.

Although, I do agree with you about digital downloads being less convenient.
my internet is quite slow, takes days and days to download any decently large game.

I do like steam for the social feature, being able to join friends' games, and automatic patches and updates.

Meh, I'm locked out of many modern Wii games (like Skyward Sword) because they lack left-handed support and I lack sufficient right-handed coordination and lateral thinking capacities to compensate, something I find a far worse tragedy than not being able to play a game that also happens to be released for one of the consoles.

I find Digital Download services to be annoying, since if you buy a game that is "sponsored" by that service you don't get anything related to the game you bought, simply a copy of client and the activation code, requiring a decent internet connection to play a AAA game the same day you buy it (which I don't have and can't afford). This is negative convenience. Further Steam itself has been the direct cause of two separate crashes on this system, one nearly crashing the computer itself, both times because Steam's programmer designed it to update the moment it detected an update rather than wait for system idle, which I know is possible to code in. Again negative convenience. Then there's the fact that if I want to play any Steam games, Steam has to load, which takes up memory that could be better used running the damn game than keeping it's services up. More negative convenience.

I have received less than 0 benefit from installing and utilizing Steam in any fashion.

Any wonder I consider it bad?

You might find www.GoG.com to be a site that delivers digital downloads and has none of the problems you point out. No client, no DRM, and every game comes with a bunch of extras.

A super easy way to avoid this is to be wary of all links people send you. You cannot mask links in Steam, they always appear as is. Something that could be easily circumvented by using a URL shortener. So, if someone sends you link you don't expected, don't follow it.

For those of us outside of Canada, what are those?

Some ISPs prevent downloads after a certain amount of data, and others charge prohibitive amounts after a certain point. This includes uploads and downloads, btw.

The real problem is the caps are often as low as 25GB a month. So basically if you want to use Youtube/Netflix, you don't get to play games.

Yep. I was doing a report at the time and my brain was fried. I didn't draw the connection until steam reset my connection.
