Re: [Steam] Thread XIX: It's a Kritzmas miracle!
Well, I just downloaded and quickly finished "playing" Dear Esther.
And here I thought Korsakovia was strange.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIX: It's a Kritzmas miracle!
Zeful: Apologies if this comes off as patronising, but have you tried updating your graphics card drivers? That fixed all the problems I was having with JC2 (also on Steam) back in November or so.

I write a gaming blog. It also hosts my gaming downloads:
Fatescape - FATE-based D&D emulator, for when you want D&D flavour but not D&D complexity.
Exalted Mass Combat Rules - Because the ones in the core book suck.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIX: It's a Kritzmas miracle!
really? AFAIK, steam only updates when it starts up, or it will send you a message saying "Hey, there's a new update. Would you like to restart steam and download it?" or else there's a setting you can set so it does that.
Although, I do agree with you about digital downloads being less convenient.
my internet is quite slow, takes days and days to download any decently large game.
I do like steam for the social feature, being able to join friends' games, and automatic patches and updates.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIX: It's a Kritzmas miracle!
You might find www.GoG.com to be a site that delivers digital downloads and has none of the problems you point out. No client, no DRM, and every game comes with a bunch of extras.
In other news, I edited the thread OP to use the new ChHa Admins Steam Group.

Impulse also has that for many of it's games. Especially ones that they're really affiliated with.

I'd like to also note that for those of us in Canada, download limits really hurt the ability to use digital downloads.

Then you should be fine. Dumb me, I did it without even thinking. First time I've ever done that.

It's funny because when he messaged me I was watching a Star Trek episode where Picard is replaced by an evil clone.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIX: It's a Kritzmas miracle!
Oh. I followed the link but didn't enter anything either. Because it said it wasn't official, I was thinking, "Why does he want me to vote for him on a non-official website. Oh well, when he comes back online I'll ask him."
Good thing I saw this.

Too late.
Same.
Indeed.
I wen there, entered my password, got redirected to the real site. WOndered why it wasn't working. Several tries latter, I figure out I've been an idiot. So now I sit here with my unfamiliar password. I really should start using different passwords for stuff anyway.

Do I only have to follow the link, or is there some verification I have to do?

Re: [Steam] Thread XIX: It's a Kritzmas miracle!
A super easy way to avoid this is to be wary of all links people send you. You cannot mask links in Steam, they always appear as is. Something that could be easily circumvented by using a URL shortener. So, if someone sends you link you don't expected, don't follow it.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIX: It's a Kritzmas miracle!
Some ISPs prevent downloads after a certain amount of data, and others charge prohibitive amounts after a certain point. This includes uploads and downloads, btw.
The real problem is the caps are often as low as 25GB a month. So basically if you want to use Youtube/Netflix, you don't get to play games.

Re: [Steam] Thread XIX: It's a Kritzmas miracle!
I think you have to enter a username and password for them to get anything from you.
I heard a little bit about this a couple of days ago. I don't know enough of the details to properly tell you, so I found a link to Ars Technica for you. That explains it, more or less.
