I wouldn't agree myself, but they do seem quite heavily represented (especially when you realise that Viking's are just manlier pirates ).

Depends entirely on the circumstances

As I mentioned previously, there are more metal types to sing about, it's just I don't know of any bands besides Ex-Deo doing Rome and I'm yet to hear 18th-19th century done at all (besides Running Wild's admirable, but lone, attempt).

Saw a local metal band (Bay Area thrash scene is pretty cool) last night, opening for my friends (indie-rock) band. They were pretty fun, had some really interesting songwriting. Sort of hard to classify; I've seen all the musicians in other thrash bands, but this band was hardly thrash. Sort of Alice in Chains, but more metal. They're great guys, also. What do you guys think?

They're pretty good, actually. Almost a bit too derivative of Alice in Chains, but the riffs are good enough for them to pull it off. Nice song structures. The drum production is pretty terrible (bass drums sound like crap), but that's hardly the band's fault.

to me this shadow force thing is like running wild with pirate metal
yes the lyrics have to do with the subject (in this case ninjas) but the songs do not capture the feel of sneaking around and stabbing people
its also hard because there are no songs that are considered to be in the 'ninja' style

I think we can all agree in one thing. Metal + Pirates = Awesome.

So I've been working on compiling together a list of these gimmicky and/or epically themed (YMMV) metal bands. I call it Rule666: if it exists, there is a metal subgenre of it. Any assistance in lengthening this list would be greatly appreciated and whenever I make it a last.fm journal entry, credit will go where credit is due.

NOTES:
I excluded Viking, Celt, Satanist, and Lovecraftian bands due to much abundance and general conspicuousness.
Some of it is truly dreadful. Don't be discouraged; there are some gems in here.

@Klose: The term "Ex Deo" is Greek, right?

@shiram: GWAR is kinda tough, because they're supposed to be Aliens, but the lyrics also cover things completely unrelated to that. I guess I'll just disregard those. And upon my restructuring, they can be included as monsters AND aliens.

Oh, and I included some Warhammer-themed bands, which is just about the most metal topic a band could write lyrics about.

these are mostly bands inspired by harry potter

Yeah, I think that's as specific as it gets. They write songs about different sci-fi shows and books (some of them aren't even set in space), so I guess they don't really have a "theme".
