Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
I'd label them just metal. Really not very thrashy.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
is it just me or are Pirates in general more likely to have an affinity with metal than pretty much any other awesome historical people group (particularly ninjas)
in other words
is it just me or are pirates the most metal people ever?

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Depends entirely on the circumstances
As I mentioned previously, there are more metal types to sing about, it's just I don't know of any bands besides Ex-Deo doing Rome and I'm yet to hear 18th-19th century done at all (besides Running Wild's admirable, but lone, attempt).*Splendid Goatatar by that cool kid Serpentine

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
to me this shadow force thing is like running wild with pirate metal
yes the lyrics have to do with the subject (in this case ninjas) but the songs do not capture the feel of sneaking around and stabbing people
its also hard because there are no songs that are considered to be in the 'ninja' style

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
So I've been working on compiling together a list of these gimmicky and/or epically themed (YMMV) metal bands. I call it Rule666: if it exists, there is a metal subgenre of it. Any assistance in lengthening this list would be greatly appreciated and whenever I make it a last.fm journal entry, credit will go where credit is due.
NOTES:
I excluded Viking, Celt, Satanist, and Lovecraftian bands due to much abundance and general conspicuousness.
Some of it is truly dreadful. Don't be discouraged; there are some gems in here.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
I was actually kidding with the ninja metal thing. And Shadow Warriors really sounds a bit more like it would fit within Power Rangers or something.
@eyeofsaulot
Maybe you should expand on the Alien Metal thing and turn it into "sci-fi metal". Because then, we can fit Star One in there.
Still haven't seen the whole list, I'll do it when I have the time. Whalecore made me lol.Avatar by billtodamax

How is Electric Wizard not Wizard Metal?
Because their lyrics have nothing to do with wizards, I know, I know. And "occult metal" would be, like, half of all metal bands ever.Avatar by Kris on a Stick

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Dunno if I've already posted this, so here we go:
In Flames vs Soilwork.
Great or REALLY great?
I played this one last weekend when I was DJing in my local club, where both songs are really well liked. Got some puzzled looks, but overall people found it cool.
Also: Had 666 paying customers that evening. "Ultimative MetalMania" rocks :D

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
@PsychedelicBard: I fear Sci-Fi might be too broad a theme and cover too many bands. Is there a more specific tag that could be attributed to Star One?
@Klose: The term "Ex Deo" is Greek, right?
@shiram: GWAR is kinda tough, because they're supposed to be Aliens, but the lyrics also cover things completely unrelated to that. I guess I'll just disregard those. And upon my restructuring, they can be included as monsters AND aliens.
Oh, and I included some Warhammer-themed bands, which is just about the most metal topic a band could write lyrics about.
EDIT: @Marillion: That was a silly oversight on my part.Last edited by eyeofsaulot; 2011-03-24 at 10:25 AM.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Yeah, I think that's as specific as it gets. They write songs about different sci-fi shows and books (some of them aren't even set in space), so I guess they don't really have a "theme".
NOTE: Not to be confused with space rock.Avatar by billtodamax
