I don't see how Korn, Tool, and Rage Against the Machine aren't metal. Especially the first two; Nu-Metal, believe it or not, is a subgenre of metal, and Tool is like the best Isis cover band ever. I don't think that NIN and Soundgarden play metal, but I like NIN's first two albums quite a bit regardless.

Well see to me the only thing metal about nu-metal, is the word metal...
I equate it to something like the hair metal movement in the late 80's.

And rock bands with metal element really blur the line.

But that is just my opinion.
Also liking a band does not make them metal, as I said, I do like some of the bands I listed before, and I have been a great fans of NIN's earlier material.

I don' t think anyone int his thread would be reffering to Korn or SLipknot as metal because they liked them . I don't think I would require hands to count the number of positive things said about either of the two bands in these threads. That said both have undeniably metal elements in the majority of their music, primarily in the drums and in the guitars. But yeah NIN while good =/= metal, agreed.

Geez, I take a break for a little while and y'all get to fussin' and squabblin' about something for which there is no answer -- what is metal? You might as well ask us acolytes of metal to venture forth into the wasteland seeking an answer to the riddle of steel...only to find the answer was pulsing in our veins the entire time.

I've done this, much to the amusement of my friends, while listening to Dragonforce.

Did I mention Dragonforce is a guilty pleasure? cuz they probably are. Not a big one, but it exists.

I think it's really hard do define metal without being influenced by personal preferences. It's a really big genre (doom, death, black, power, heavy etc) so it's impossible to compare it to anything. In my opinion, metal's beauty as a genre is because of the fact that every person that listens to it can identify with it. I personally don't consider Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park (nu-metal in general for that matter) because I don't indentify it with what I think metal is.

This is not metal -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRGrNDV2mKc

    This is METAL -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-49noOAFsG8

I want to hear riffs, insane guitar solos, great voices etc. Screaming and randomly hitting a cord is not metal.

Oh and here's a great band I enjoy listening too very often.

My friend once said Metal is really a super genre, saying how bands like ManoWar and Amon Amarth, while both metal, aren't really... very similar. There are common threads, but not enough to say "same genre" and didn't feel like saying subgenre was enough of a difference.

Also Bloodlover, I approve of that Saxon song. Need to listen to them more.

Huh, I found a Swedish... heavy metal/power metal band it says it is, called Narnia.

    They aren't bad, here's a sample.

Not too shabby. Not the best, but fairly respectable.

See, this is a perfect example. I could care less about riffs, and I loathe people who talk about bands while using terms like 'riffage.' Solos can be okay, but I don't like them in and of themselves. I like vocals of nearly every sort. We obviously have nearly opposite opinions on metal. I really don't see how that Saxon song is any more metal than Korn, but I think that they're both in the same supergenre. For that matter, I don't like either of them.

Tales from the Emerald Sworg Saga, is a decent best of compilation.
If not, I found Legendary Tales to be quite decent, also Power of the DragonFlame.
They would be the standouts for me.

I don't think so, actually is Flyleaf metal either? I'd always just thought of them as pop rock /pop hard rock.

I second Toastey's nomination for Simmone Simons as metal queen, Anna Murphy is up there as well I'd say

Neither Janet Jackson or Flyleaf are even remotely metal.

And just for the sake of being contrary and sludge metal-y, and on the topic of females in metal, there's Lori S., the guitarist and singer in Acid King, and Liz Buckingham, the guitarist in Electric Wizard.
