Default Best familiar or variant [3.5]

at 10th Lvl, what would the best familiar, familiar variant, or feat to grant a certain type of familiar be for my wizard?

Coure Eladrin (BoED) and Imp/quasits usually give you the best bang for your buck,as since they are humanoid shaped, thay can use Aid Another for every skill you use, use items fitted to humanoids, etc. IIRC Imps also make somewhat good combatants with their alternate form.

Having said that I am partial to Pseudo dragon... and if you can get your DM to let you select its feats or you somehow change them (Dark Chaos shuffle or Psychic reformation for example) you can get your own little radar of you give it mindsight.

Note my DM really hated my little dragon because of that, it prevented ALL ambushes he could cook up.

It's almost as good as his basketweaving handbook.

If you don't want a cheesy familiar, then there's the classics. Rats for Fort saves, and if the DM allows Dragon Magazine content, Humingbirds for initiative.

Any familiar with the outsider creature type gets proficiency in all simple and martial weapons as a racial trait, and can be polymorphed into powerful combatants like a Kelvezu (MM2) or an Arrow Demon (MM3). My favorite would have to be an Imp, since it gets a Suggestion spell-like ability plus the invisibility at will and fast healing. You can also take Craft: Poisonmaking and it shares your ranks so it can make poisons while you rest without risk of poisoning itself. Improved Familiar in the DMG allows you to get one at 7th level, the feat can be taken as early as 3rd level.

If you're a specialist Conjurer, you may as well get Abrupt Jaunt (PH2) or Rapid Summoning (UA/SRD) instead, but you can always spend a feat on Obtain Familiar to get one anyway. If you're a specialist Necromancer, the Skeletal Minion (UA/SRD) is particularly good considering it can wear armor and use a tower shield to block attackers from reaching you. Most of the UA specialist ACFs which replace a familiar are worth looking at. If your character isn't specialized and he's an elf, take the elf wizard substitution levels and get a hummingbird, which ends up granting you +8 initiative and doesn't really cost you anything.
