If you mean how long it will take to set up the generator, pretty much no time. It's basically plug and play. You hook up the generator to a power and you get your planetary shield. If you mean actually figuring out how it works and reverse engineering it, several turns at least. I suppose your exploration ship could speed it up a bit if it stayed around, but that would depend on what Thelonius says.

You asked about having both planets in the same stat block in your last question. I assume you meant your two homeworlds, but it could apply to any planet you have a base on.

You will get an additional /++++ mil whenever you turn on the shield. Subject of course to your ability to provide the necessary power, or research an upgrade.

There aren't any actual incidents yet, but this latest the development has your entire ship on edge. The cyborgs are of course unhappy about being quarantined. And the rest of the crew remembers the orders to completely destroy the other cyborgs, a move which seems unnecessarily harsh in hindsight given the apparent return of the cyborgs to their senses. Still nothing has happened yet other than some agitation to see if it would be possible to remove the cyborg's implants, many of the crew have friends who have become cyborgs and they want them back.

Each of the pieces of salvage is quite large and given their alien nature wouldn't be easy to disassemble. Of course it would likely be possible to duplicate them eventually and share the benefits among the entire coalition, but that would require additional research as each of the components would have to be reverse engineered in order to build new ones with human technology.

The Suula En'Coi haven barely even started exploring the system. So they really have no idea what it's eventual benefits might be. About the best they can estimate is that there will be economic benefits from settling the planets, and mining the asteroids. Of course on the other hand establishing the colonies will require effort, and continuously opening wormholes between Altair and 36 Ophiuchi will eat away some of those benefits as well.

Other than that they don't know, and can only guess at what sorts of things they might find, either benefits or hazards. They do know that the system is not empty though. The stealthed ships are still there as far as they know as well as the unknowns in the asteroid belt, and whether they prove hostile or friendly is still unknown.

This is a general transmission. Our exploration ship will be going to Delta Pavonia, and if anyone else has a claim to that system, we would ask them to speak up within the next twenty-four hours.
Presuming that 24 IC hours is less than 24 OOC hours, we send the ship to Delta Pavonia, barring someone speaking up nowish.

    At the Conference

    ISREC

ISREC announes it will accept the sovereignty of the Sthuthid Federation and the Sumus. They accept both factions claims to their worlds, and agree to sign a treaty of non-agression with both factions

ISREC agrees to contribute to the Joint Warp Gate Fund, they also express an interest in purchasing a sample of spice from the Sthuthid Federation.

    GDF

A representative from the Global Defence Force arrives, and is escorted to the Conference.

    They start by making the same agreements as ISREC did, not including the spice deal. However the representative goes on to propose another agenda;

"Greetings collective people of the galaxy. I know this is a meant to be a conference to welcome the Sthuthid and Sumus into the galaxy, but something has arisen, and this is perhaps the best place I can tell you all.

As you all know, the GDF recently engaged the K'Krex in DX Cancri. We had the aid of Solaris Incorporated, but even then we still outmatched. We managed to force a small K'Krex fleet to surrender, but we knew they were calling in reinforcements.

It is then that we made a decision we regret. We contacted the Hive Mind, asking for their help. We knew the Hive Mind had a bad reputation, but we hoped that after all these years they might have realised the follies of violence. We were wrong. They betrayed us and joined with the K'Krex.

Months ago we came to you asking for your help against the K'Krex. They are a powerful force in the galaxy, one interested only in their own mad conquests. Many of you do not join us. We understood this. As rules you must all be plagued with troubles, ruling a nation is not easy.

But now, things are different. While the K'Krex alone might not be a threat, the combined armada of the Hive Mind and K'Krex are. If we do not unite against them, the entire galaxy could be in danger. They will stop at nothing to have their way, regardless of any lives they destroy.

This is not a call to violence, we are not demanding we charge into combat and destroy their fleets. We still believe there is a chance for peace. If we all stand together, and make our unity known, they will back down.

    Who is with me?"

    Delta Pavonia
The Sumus exploration ship warps into the Delta Pavonis ship smoothly. Initial scans of the system reveal a rather large bounty of planets. At least seven rocky planets, six gas giants, and five or six asteroid belts. The most interesting feature of the system however is the not any of these, but a large free floating object in polar orbit around the systems red giant. It is quite large easily the size of a moon or small planet, but also obviously artificial. Scans can detect several different signals coming from it, but it's too far into the inner system to decipher them.

And then you spent a couple weeks messing with the plant world's signals. And then another couple of months dickering with the Trader and taking the shield back to your home system.

You have to remember that although these posts go up as if they're instantaneous no one has FTL insystem travel. Getting around and talking to people takes more time than it seems. Shoot out of all the people exploring you've actually gotten the farthest in exploring your system.

The ISREC exploration ship warps into the system and immediately conducts some scans to see if it matches up with the Ascension's reports. Everything appears to, so it starts heading in system. Unfortunately for it the Amerigo never finished it's mapping process. So at the 10 AU mark the ISREC ship runs out of map just as it hits the densest anomaly field.

There is a question in which system should Warp Stabilization Device be activated - Goombridge or Lacaille? And to which system or systems should they connect. The process isn't always precise, as there is always a chance of Warp Lanes forming to any nearby systems with Warp Gates, but it can be influenced to a degree.

The Kingdom of Procyon insists on connection to Teegarden's Star, while The Reach humbly proposes connection to their own system.

Tian Technocracy is clearly interested in Sumus technological potential, while Kingdom of Procyon opens negotiations on spice trade, after it is approved the the Holy Church of course. The Reach is primarily interested in cultural exchange programs. The Star God's representative Sayana Starblaze doesn't make sense half of the time, speaking in highly metaphorical manner.

It creates an acute awareness noss and contentedness with the Universe. It inspires creativity, strength, bravery. There is a saying, on our worlds. It is the slogan of the Cardeen Spice Company. It translates, roughly, to: "He who has not consumed Spice has not yet been alive." And we find the statement very true.

"However, we would never force life from nonlife. We would never force awareness from non-awareness. So, let my kin and I enjoy Spice for a moment. Feel no shame in not partaking."

The Administrator stepped down from the platform he had been standing on, and shuffled back to his seat at one end of the table. A dozen Sthuthid representatives wearing ornate robes drew simple, ebony-colored basins from under the table at once. They placed the bowls before them and bowed their heads, almost in prayer. They poured some water from a jug into the bowl, and then some small, colorless rocks from pouches in their robes.

They manipulated some kind of switch on the side of the primitive-looking bowls, and the water began to boil and evaporate almost immediately. They leaned over their bowls, tentacles wrapping all the way over the top, and with closed eyes breathed in the scent of the spice.

Sthuthid crew-members offer bowls and Spice to any ambassador who wishes to take it.

    [after]
A refreshed Ambassador Tsuul resumes his place at the podium. Not mentioning the spice, he jumps into business.

"On the matter of the Warp Network...we are requesting the formation of a committee to acquire funds and spend them on expanding the network to include our systems. Such a program could be funded over the course of..."
[anyone want to contribute money to building a warp in exchange for a long-term trade agreement with the Sthuthids?]

    Message from Chairman Skrall
    Cardeen Spice Company
    Spoiler
    Show
Chairman Skrall meets privately with any ambassador who will see him. He wishes to offer a small amount of Spice at a cheap price for a "trial run" of the substance on their planets. What the representatives do after buying the spice is up to them, although Skrall recommends putting it in the public and letting the marketplace deal with it.

The only conditions are that the spice cannot be Sold in any Sthuthid systems, where the Cardeen Spice Company demands to maintain it's monopoly, and that the value of spice can never be risen above a certain maximum set by the Cardeen Spice Company (maybe 300% average price), designed to prevent price gouging but still allow the free market to determine value.

You feel calmer and more confident. Small problems you had been working on in your mind--mathematical, social, political--seem easy now, as the answers flow through your mind. You are able to trace your subconscious mind, every twist and turn of your thought process is laid before you as if you can physically see them.

You are able to focus on multiple problems at once. You read the facial expressions of your fellow ambassadors keenly, you are almost positive you know what they are thinking at any given moment. The confidence is offset by a healthy dose of zen. Above all else, you are happy and hopeful.

The effects of the small dose you have taken will gradually wear off over the next 4 hours. Within 6 hours, you will not feel them at all.

(this more or less applies to anyone who takes it. Mass of creature effects dosage and length as with any drug.)

    About the "Trial Run"
"If you find a desire among your people for spice, we can negotiate a long-term contract in the future."
