Yes! Who knew all it would take was the thought of characters permanently struggling against an all-consuming living ooze putting a pause on their very mind and leaving their body frozen in suspension for all time to do with as it pleases?
Not me, that's for sure!

I started Minecraft a few days ago and I start to think of it. Why don't someone bring on a server and we create the Nexus in Minecraft^^.

Re: [NEXUS] OOC 16: Sweet!
Generally if you ask someone ooc if you can ambush one of their characters somewhere, they'll post for them in the appropriate place. It's just that nobody wants to waste their precious rp time posting for their character being alone if they aren't expecting the alone-ness to suddenly change.

Re: [NEXUS] OOC 16: Sweet!
Funny fact: superpowered attacks tend to be deflected, dodged, blocker or otherwise prevented from working more often than low-powered ones. I think it's because low-powered attacks are less binary - it's much easier to describe your character as being hit but not killed or otherwise removed from the fight when s/he's attacked with a sword, a gun or moderately powered spell than a Mighty Godsplosion of Ultimate Doom.
As for the actual fight, I haven't been keeping up with it that closely, but Prince does seem to dance around their opponents' attacks. My FFRP characters. Avatar by Ashen Lilies. Sigatars by Ashen Lilies, Gullara and Purple Eagle.

Re: [NEXUS] OOC 16: Sweet!
This pretty much.
Save-Or-Die type attacks are only really viable if you've already worked out ahead of time with a player that the PC being attacked is going to die in the course of the fight. And getting that godmodding permission also means that the attack in question can be that much more epic in its description.
I also think it's worth while to note that pretty much any combat-capable PC can use insta-kill attacks. Generally a sword through the heart or a bullet through the brain is just as lethal as a cloying black bolt of magic that will dissolve the target's flesh and leave naught but bleached bones behind. The latter is just a bit flashier.
On another note for the magic-user types. This isn't DnD. Spells like Finger of Death don't really work here since you just point at someone and they either explode in a shower of gore or take enough internal injury to slay a normal human instantly. Doom attacks should generally have some sort of warning or projectile that gives less magic-y players a chance to avoid them.
And one final thing. You should probably work out ahead of time how a fight with two or more PCs is going to end with the respective players. This precludes everyone trying to win and constantly one-upping each other. Instead everyone is working toward the same goal, making the scene as awesome as possible.Warning! Re: [NEXUS] OOC 16: Sweet!
That can be difficult when each of the characters has an IC goal of 'kill the other guy' and nobody wants to retreat.

Re: [NEXUS] OOC 16: Sweet!
Yus.
Which is why the one-upping is an issue.
But if you step out of the IC and agree 'We're both going to get injured and then retreat,' or 'You'll kill my character but take horrible injury to do so,' or some similar thing then you as a player can work toward an OOC goal while your PC works toward a different IC goal.
It's just your job as the player to thwart your PCs plans =PWarning! Random Encounter™ detected!

Re: [NEXUS] OOC 16: Sweet!
One thing that I have been a bit annoyed at is how so-called 'mundane' characters without any type of enchantments can perform traits such as a dodging supernaturally fast attacks.
'Mundane' often implies human-level speed, reflexes, etc. and for instance, not even the fastest human alive could measure up to some animals in speed or reflexes, we are actually quite limited in many areas which is why we use technology to overcome such limitations.
It's all up to the players of course and I do realize some humans come from fictional universes where such limitations doesn't exist, but in that case, they aren't all that 'mundane' are they? A level 1 PC from D&D wouldn't be all that mundane in my book considering how insane d&d stats are.
I just like people to realize that no matter how much training you have, there are some things you can't match as a human being in terms of strength, speed and stamina.
Of course, you might argue that 'supernaturally fast' is extremely vague but it's hard to exactly define just how fast an attack is without using some sort of comparing it to something.
Supernaturally fast in my case is faster then any natural creature could move. If the term 'natural' is vague could of course also be taken up to discussion, but in my case it means any creature we known on exists in real life.
All our knowledge is at some point based on real life after all.
Of course, there is the OOC to take into account of course, but it was something I just liked to point out before you start calling your level 1 D&D character 'mundane'.

Re: [NEXUS] OOC 16: Sweet!
This is the Nexus, SC.
A first level commoner could kick a god's ass if the commoner's player felt like writing out the scene.
The Nexus itself screws with reality to keep things interesting. If it didn't then there would be no way anyone here would be able to harm everyone's favorite spunky vivacious Old One. And that simply wouldn't be fun.
If someone wants to have their normal human PC dodge a super-sonic punch then that's up to them. A character's power level is not a limit on what they can do with their skill set. The limit is what their player feels inclined to allow their PC to do.Warning! Random Encounter™ detected!

Re: [NEXUS] OOC 16: Sweet!
So...Edijar should have had all his bones broken by a single punch, or been stabbed in the back while having his neck crushed without a chance to react because he's human?
What Edijar is doing is within human limits. He's at peak human condition physically and neurologically. He's trained his body to react to stress on reflex after years of combat. He's not an "average" human.
As for him going against the superspeed, it was described as less than "a blink of an eye". People can easily react faster than that. Some can catch a cobra as it gets ready to strike, or grab a pistol aimed at them, push it away, and punch the attacker in the same extremely fast motion.
This is before Adrenaline comes into account.
Edijar is far from an average human, but he's still well within human limits.Last edited by UncleWolf; 2011-03-14 at 11:47 AM.

Re: [NEXUS] OOC 16: Sweet!
I'm pretty sure Charity hitting the ground and screaming was within human limits too, but if anyone things it was OP, I'll consider editing.

Re: [NEXUS] OOC 16: Sweet!
Just because a character lacks magic doesn't mean he or she should automatically lose to everything that does. In many stories, non-magical folks are just background. But in the Nexus, they're actual characters with their own stories, purpose and goals. Not Muggles who will drop flat as soon as magic starts flying around. If that means they do things that shouldn't be possible, so be it. This is FFRP.
