Australasia in the Playground IV
Righto ladies and gents. I know the "honour" () of making this new thread was meant to go to Roc Ness, but he contacted me to let me know he's simply got too much schoolwork on his plate right now, so I'll be taking care of the threadwork for him this time.
Obligatory welcome speech:
Welcome, one and all, to thethirdfourth Australasia in the Playground thread! The perfect place for all our friends in the Australasia region to congregate, meet nearby fellows and talk about the world around us continues to expand.
Previous threads, for your convenience:
Australasia in the Playground
Australasia in the Playground II
Australasia in the Playground III
Now go forth and socialise! Mwahahaha!
Now go to it, my fellows!Last edited by Skeppio; 2011-03-21 at 07:38 AM.

Re: Australasia in the Playground IV
Hmm, now that my long hiatus is over, maybe I should remake the playgrounder map I did for the first thread.

Re: Australasia in the Playground IV
Melbourne's gotta have a museum right? that's something to do...
okay I'll admit, 'where's the museum' is generally the first question I ask when going to a new place. I like museums

Re: Australasia in the Playground IV
Hey, funky
Peregrine and I are in Perth, can we be added pretty please?
And you need a map of NZ to add Insanealien to
edit: meant to say this earlier, Skep your new avatar is both funky and creeping me out at the same time. Love the colours and the look, but the toothy grin is creepy!Last edited by Lady Moreta; 2011-03-22 at 05:11 AM.

Re: Australasia in the Playground IV
If anyone lives in Canberra, or knows someone who does, you might be able to help out a friend of mine in need.
Rettu Skcollob: feel free to add me to the Perth area as well.

Rettu: You can add me in the Adelaide bit
Rawhide: Melbourne...Museum is pretty cool. There's a lot of funky historical stuff around...the Melbourne Gaol was interesting and a tad creepy.
(trying to remember back two years ago)
There are great second-hand bookshops everywhere.
St Kilda was nice...we went there at sunset with fish and chips.
There are some really tall observation towers...they're funky.
The aquarium.
The Melbourne Zoo has a butterfly house...it's wonderful. Butterflies everywhere.
And Melbourne is just generally a really pretty city...just catching trams places would be sort of fun

Re: Australasia in the Playground IV
Have they tried government agencies or charities? They can help with temp accomodation.
I'm sitting on the desk at work, phone rings for the first time in half an hour and it's a cold call.

Re: Australasia in the Playground IV
He's trying to avoid government agencies and charities; and he does have his father in Brisbane as a last resort option, though it will be incredibly inconvenient and impractical.
Accommodation needs to be more than temporary. He's doing post-grad studies, and can't really afford to be moving around all the time. Which is why he has been in his current bad accommodation situation for a long time - the house owner knows he has a limited budget, which has pretty much trapped him in a situation which is detrimental to his mental health. The current situation has effectively forced him to either move out or become the owner's live-in servant.

Re: Australasia in the Playground IV
Still, if he really wants/needs to get out of this place, temporary accommodation could be something to look at until he can find something more permanent.
I would suggest he stick up notices at community centres and supermarkets. Also suggest that he get in touch with local churches - he doesn't need to be religious, but a lot of churches have people who are willing to put others up for a time. I stayed with people I didn't even know for three weeks while doing fieldwork research for my Masters degree- found them through church. It's worth a shot. Might only be temporary again, but homestaying with someone from a church is likely to be less stressful than government accommodation - they're more likely to have no time limit on how long your friend can stay.
I would just like to comment on how annoying it is when someone comes to fix something and all you can do is think how much you want to use what they're fixing. We just had a plumber to fix the toilet and all I could think while he was here is 'I need to peeeeee!'

Re: Australasia in the Playground IV
If we post now and then can we stay on the map? It'd be so much trouble to chart-er a new mapmaker just to re-add my name
I feel sorry for AxeD, only one in the N.T. Looks like Perth is filling up. Soon we shall be ready to launch our offensive...
