Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
It was much more that I only recently got into shmups, and made actual progress on the "you asked for it" stage.
I got PCB instead, and that has quite effectively shot my ego, since there are far fewer lives, a far more stringent "press x to use a bomb and not die" timer, and the stage 4 bosses, as well as Youmu and Yuyuko happily crushing me.
And it appears, on this computer, that there is a slight delay between me pushing a button and something happening.I Wanna Be the Guy Kid avatar by Ceika. Many thanks.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Hey. Though I have managed to get through PCB without continuing at last, there's still a few parts that are still a bit difficult. Namely, all but one of Yuyuko's spellcards, (the only one that doesn't give me trouble being the one with the exploding homing lasers) and Resurrection Butterfly in particular.
Any strategies that aren't bombspam?I Wanna Be the Guy Kid avatar by Ceika. Many thanks.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Practice. Honestly, I do it all on the fly, so I can't help you. Though that approach seems to even work on Lunatic, at least on PCB.
Also, homing lasers are the safe one for you? Pardon me while I boggle at that for a bit.
Oh, for Resurrection Butterfly, don't... well, don't move much. Really, all you need is slight left/right movement from your starting point, for the most part. It's actually a lot easier than some of her other cards.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
So, I recently became interested in drawing stuff again, and in a happy coincidence (starting here), I made Alice's House, but from a different view for kicks. (also asked Glyphstone about posting in the thread again and it's ok)
Spoiler
I may add more to it later as well.Last edited by memnarch; 2012-04-06 at 10:00 PM.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
And as this has been resurrected, I have something to add too. While in Japan on vacation with my parents I naturally hit the shops of Akihabara hard and found that Touhou is even bigger than when I was here last. I don't think I'll exaggerate by saying that roughly 50% of all doujins were Touhou, a figure that is roughly the same for merchandise of most kinds. Only Madoka even got close to having a similarly visibly presence. It was quite insane really. Did allow me to get a sukusuku hakutaku plushie, plushies of Mokou and Alice and a really cook Byakuren figure, though. Also a Homura nendoroid, but that's not really relevant to the thread.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Can't claim to have researched it, but my estimate would be that it is unique enough to be something in its own right, while also being very open to personal interpretation. The quality of the music and the distinctiveness of the designs of the characters help too. I've also found that ZUN is good at communicating ideas and feelings with very few words. My love of Maribel and Renko comes from this.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
This thread is a little like Kaguya: might not always be active, might not always be popular, but it will never. die.
And I'll agree, a good part of Touhou's popularity does come from its incredible music-and its creativity. ZUN's not a good artist, but he IS a good designer, keeping in mind that he gives every character a distinct silhouette, and I'll add some voice to the TV Tropes theory that it's something of the fandom's desire to improve on ZUN's original art that makes the fans so productive. I'll also point out that Touhou is ooold-Highly Responsive to Prayers came out back in 1996, so it has had plenty of time to pick up steam. I'll also point out that it was released as part of a university club, so it could quite easily have pulled together a core fanbase-a productive core fanbase-to expand on initial work straight from the start.
There's also the fact it's a setting where pretty much every piece of folklore and its grandmother are tossed into one place populated entirely by girls in gothic lolita fashion, but that's a story for another less SFW thread.
Tell me they carried something Utsuho-related.Last edited by Cyborg Mage; 2012-04-07 at 09:56 AM.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
In addition to the above points, having lots & lots of (distinct) characters lends itself naturally to lots & lots of merchandise. Touhou might even have a below average merchandise/character rate .
A permissive policy on the creation & sale of fanart leads to more quality stuff being made (Touhouvania, Memories of Phantasm, etc.), attracting more fans and causing it all to snowball once it gains sufficient momentum (and were well past that point now).
It wouldn't really surprise me if Touhou were to become entirely creatively 'self-sufficient' at some point.Last edited by IncoherentEssay; 2012-04-07 at 10:32 AM.

More fixed;
<- That look like Kaguya to you? I didn't see her bringing the thread back...
Re: A Bad End. Closest thing was this, but there's no pictures there.
However, there is picture I found, so I guess Kaguya still wins the goofy expression contest.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Sillier.
Spoiler
THIS is A Bad End. No wacky shipping here-just 197 pages of epic-level Kaguya insanity. Though Mokou does do well for herself in the wacky expression department... The whole thing is here, just so you know.
In any case, I see a peaceful, reasonable conclusion to this argument, so I'm sure you can make the time at some point and we can politely talk this matter over with all due SEAMLESS CEILING OF KINKAKU-JI!Originally Posted by The-Mage-King;

Well, I'd made this one a while back for one of those Iron Avatarist contests and it seemed more appropriate (currently in thread) if I edited out Marisa and Alice.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Why didn't anyone tell me they'd used a continue?
First off, everyone's aware of ZUN getting married, right?
Second, remember Memories of Phantasm?

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Well, since Hisouten was mentioned, I thought I might try a couple games against com to see if I still know how to shot web.
My god, I've become terrible. I barely remember how to projectile properly, and came near losing to AI several times. I kept whiffing with Komachi like there's no tomorrow. I used to know how to play this game, I swear.
